Chapter 24: Suspicion
William sneered, his words still dripping with sarcasm. "I thought you were some top executive from somewhere, but it turns out you’re just a small repairman."
"William Krut!" Laura stomped her foot in anger.
Jessie patted Laura on the back. "Mom, don’t be angry. You should head back. I have a lot to pack up here."
Laura glared at William with annoyance, then glanced at Kevin apologetically.
"It’s okay, Mom. I don’t mind." Kevin shrugged.
Only narrow-minded people liked to think their position made them superior.
As Laura left with William, he kept grumbling, seemingly upset by Kevin’s attitude today.
He had worked up the nerve to chat with Kevin, but Kevin even ignored him! What a waste of time.
Jessie sighed, closing the door before patting Kevin on the shoulder.
"Mr. Harper, don’t mind him; he’s just like that. Besides, what’s wrong with being a repairman? I think it’s a great job. If something breaks at home, it would be more expensive to hire someone to fix it, right?"
Kevin shook his head. "I don’t mind, but isn’t he still your stepfather? Wouldn’t you get in trouble since you spoke up for me?"
"What’s the big deal? He was in the wrong, so of course I will take your side." Jessie thought he might feel guilty and reassured him, "Don’t worry. I don’t feel anything for him, anyway. As long as he’s good to my mom, I don’t care much about other stuff."
After saying that, she turned to clean up the dishes on the table. Kevin saw how busy she had been all day, feeling a bit guilty.
"Let me help you." He volunteered, taking the bowl from her hand and heading into the kitchen.
She was pleased with his thoughtfulness, but on second thought, she hurried to follow behind him. "Mr. Harper, do you know how to wash dishes?"
As expected, she saw him put the dishes in the sink and simply rinse them with water.
Jessie sighed helplessly and patted his arm. "You’re not washing them right; let me do it instead."
She skillfully put on an apron, squeezed out some dish soap, and began washing the dishes efficiently.
When she used to live with William, she was mainly responsible for chores like this.
"Mr. Harper, if you don’t use dish soap, how can you get the dishes clean?"
Kevin did not say a word; he had never done such chores before. After all, he never even had to clean up after meals.
Though Grandpa Harper used to train them so they could be independent, it had been so long since he had done any household chores.
After watching her once, he quickly learned and volunteered again to help. Jessie finally let him try again.
With the dish soap, the plates were more slippery, and Kevin couldn’t hold them properly. After several attempts, he grew a bit impatient.
When Jessie did it, it seemed so easy. Why was it so hard for him?
Seeing this, she couldn’t help but laugh. "That’s enough, just let me do it."
She didn’t expect much from Kevin; with his current pace, they would not finish washing until next year.
Kevin realized he was in the way and stepped aside for her, keeping her company from nearby.
"I’m really exhausted today." She twisted her neck, feeling a strain in her back.
"Next time, let’s just book a restaurant. It would save us a lot of trouble."
Jessie nodded, acknowledging that today was special as it was the first meeting between their families. As a daughter-in-law, she had to cook by herself or else it would be unseemly.
"What did Grandpa talk to you about today?" Kevin suddenly asked.
She paused her work, turning to him and smiling. "You really want to know?"
"Yes." He nodded, feeling like she was about to say something outrageous.
"Grandpa asked if we were getting along as a couple. I told him we aren’t that familiar with each other yet, and that we still sleep in separate rooms. He told me not to be shy and suggested I act more boldly, even mentioning that I should use a few tricks if I need to." Jessie couldn’t help but laugh.
Kevin’s expression froze; he really doubted if he was Grandpa Harper’s real grandson. To suggest to other people to trick him—could this be something a real grandpa would say?
"Grandpa’s just really eager to have a great-grandchild. Whether it’s a boy or a girl, as long as it’s our child, he said he’ll love it. He even urged us to have children soon, and the more the better. He also said he would give me two hundred thousand dollars for each child we have. As long as I’m fine with having children, he claimed he will leave all his savings to me."
Kevin couldn’t help but sigh with emotion. Grandpa Harper really cared a great deal about Jessie. Even to the point that he would give her all of his savings.
"Why does Grandpa want a great-grandchild so badly? Do elders just love having a large family?"
Kevin nodded. "It’s mainly because none of his grandsons want to settle down. Now that I’ve gotten married, he’s eager to have a great-grandchild."
Jessie touched her chin in deep thought. "Now I get it. Since none of you want to settle down and get married, it’s no wonder that Grandpa keeps urging me. It’s a pretty big task, and Grandpa’s savings aren’t that easy to get."
To Kevin, this sounded like a different kind of message. It confirmed his suspicion that Jessie’s earlier behavior was an act, and she was only targeting Grandpa Harper’s savings.
Clearly, it was because Grandpa liked her that she had set her sights on him.
Seeing him silent, Jessie turned to find Kevin’s gaze had turned cold as he stared sharply at her.
"What’s wrong?" She was puzzled by his change in demeanor. She did not say anything wrong, did she?
He ignored her, turning as he left the kitchen, leaving her there alone.
She glared at his retreating back, grumbling quietly, "Hmph, I didn’t even say anything wrong.
Besides, you were the one who asked me first, and Grandpa was the one who asked me to be bolder with you. You think I’m interested in you? Who can stand someone so cold?"
She assumed he was upset because Grandpa had told her to be bolder—perhaps even aggressive. But that had never been her intention.
After cleaning up, Jessie noticed Kevin’s door was still shut. She huffed at the door, not even considering talking to him.
They didn’t have any romantic feelings; they were just living together for convenience. She had not done anything wrong, so if he wanted to brood, she could not care less.
She headed to the balcony for some fresh air. The Quiet River Community had beautiful scenery, and the balcony was spacious enough. She had placed a small table there to enjoy the breeze and snacks comfortably.
"This is for you." Kevin appeared from his room, handing her a piece of paper.
