Chapter 23: Meeting the Parents

After the three of them went inside, Kevin introduced Laura to the members of the Harper family once again.

Laura previously owned a small shop of her own, and it was pretty big at the time. Although she was now a full-time housewife, she had been through a lot in society and could tell from the Harper family’s demeanor that they were a well-bred family. This made her even more satisfied with Jessie’s choice.

Grandpa Harper said they were just ordinary people who had spent a few years studying in the city. Their family originally lived in the countryside, and they moved to the city only after their conditions improved.

To be fair, the Harper family’s manor was indeed far from the center of the city. Grandpa Harper also liked gardening and called himself a farmer, so their story was not really wrong.

He only retired from being an entrepreneur.

Once everyone was gathered, Jessie sped up her cooking.

"Everyone, have some snacks to fill your stomachs for now. I still have a few more dishes to do."

As she spoke, Kevin rolled up his sleeves and strode into the kitchen. She watched him curiously before asking, "What are you doing here?"

He glanced down at himself and then spread his hands as he replied, "Isn’t it obvious? I’m here to help."

She waved her hand. "There’s no need for that. You can just help me bring out the dishes later, so go and chat with everyone instead."

"You should do that with my stepfather. Even though he’s not particularly fond of me, he at least works in a company. Perhaps you can talk to him, and maybe you’ll get a chance for a promotion."

Jessie’s words made Kevin pause for a moment, not expecting her to be thinking about helping him. He shook his head slightly.

"No need. I can’t have a proper conversation with him."

Aside from the fact that he did not need William’s help, what he could not stand the most was talking to him. Kevin despised people who were smooth talkers, and William was very skilled in doing that. After learning about the hospital incident, he had been relentlessly probing into Kevin’s profession and company.

Moreover, William’s manner of speaking to Laura revealed he was a typical chauvinist. When Laura asked him to grab a few wet wipes—that were right next to him—because Luke had gotten his hands dirty, he flatly refused and even told her to do it herself.

He saw right through William’s demeanor—he genuinely looked down on Laura, believing he was the head of the family. Since Laura was staying at home with the kids, he thought it was her duty to serve him.

From a younger age, Kevin had been taught to treat his wife well. A man who loves his wife will see success. Someone like William, who didn’t even respect his own wife, Kevin didn’t even want to say a word to him.

Although he and Jessie had not been married for a long time and shared little connection, he still gave her basic respect.

Hearing this, Jessie nodded and waved a hand. "It’s okay. We just won’t chat with him then."

"Don’t worry. There are plenty of people to keep him company." Kevin glanced back, seeing the third member of the Harper family chatting enthusiastically with William.

The third member was deep and calculating, skilled in concealing their emotions with a friendly demeanor, only so they could lure people into their trap.

Jessie saw him standing still and handed the freshly cooked dish to him. "Help me bring this dish out, and then come wash some vegetables later."

Since Kevin had offered to help her, she naturally didn’t hold back.

He nodded as the two continued to buzz around the kitchen. fr eewe(b)nove.l.co\m

On the other hand, Laura was distracting Luke and happened to see this scene, smiling softly.

Not only was Kevin handsome, but he was also very attentive to Jessie. Overall, she was quite satisfied.

After Jessie had finished cooking all the dishes, she invited everyone to sit down for the meal. Grandpa Harper tasted the food she made and immediately complimented her on its excellent taste.

Daniel also praised, "Sister-in-law, your cooking is really good. Can I come over every day so I can freeload meals off of you?"

As soon as he said this, Grandpa Harper tapped his head. "Every day? Are you trying to wear out your sister-in-law?"

"It’s okay; it’s just an extra pair of chopsticks. You can just let your brother know, and he can inform me." Jessie chuckled.

This was more about an extra pair of chopsticks. Grandpa Harper did not want Daniel to disrupt the couple’s budding relationship. Seeing that Kevin’s relationship with Jessie was already starting to warm up, how could Daniel butt in now?

Daniel smiled at Jessie and continued to focus on eating.

The Harper family chefs were already exceptional, but he had never experienced such simple dishes before. Their simplicity made them feel more novel and flavorful.

It was a lively afternoon, and after dinner, both families left one by one.

Laura pulled Jessie aside and whispered, "Jessie, just tell me if you face any difficulties, okay? I think this son-in-law is excellent; you two should live well."

While the mother and daughter were talking, William hesitantly approached Kevin.

"Speaking of which, you’re half my son-in-law." He chuckled, attempting to get close to Kevin.

However, Kevin wasn’t swayed by his attitude. He nodded coldly, planning to leave.

William hurriedly caught up and said, "Since they are chatting now, we can talk about some stuff between men."

"Like what?" .com

Seeing Kevin finally reply, William immediately beamed. "Where do you work, Kevin? I am somewhat of a manager myself, so maybe I can help you."

This question showed William was certain Kevin had a higher position and could perhaps give him a boost.

Kevin glanced at him and casually replied, "Vanguard Axis, a repairman."

Vanguard Axis was a branch of the Harper family business, so his statement wasn’t a lie.

Upon hearing that Kevin’s position was just a repairman, William’s face turned sour. "A repairman?"

He couldn’t believe his ears. Judging by Kevin’s demeanor, nothing suggested he was just a repairman.

Despite that, Kevin firmly nodded. "Yes."

Just then, Jessie and Laura had finished their conversation. They saw William looking rather displeased at Kevin.

Laura couldn’t help but scold, "Why do you have that look on your face? He’s Jessie’s husband, and as an elder... "

Before Laura could finish, William scoffed. "He’s just a repairman."

"So what if he’s a repairman? Uncle William, how can you be so prejudiced against jobs?" Jessie stood up for Kevin.

Kevin’s eyes flickered slightly as he looked at her defending him.
