Chapter 22: Meeting the Parents

Grandpa Harper couldn’t help but laugh when he saw Kevin carrying groceries. He hadn’t expected his grandson to accompany Jessie to the market, which seemed completely out of character.

But it’s good this way. It was Kevin himself who wanted to pretend to be poor to test Jessie, so this could be seen as experiencing life.

"Yes, we bought a lot of groceries." Jessie smiled.

Though she had only met Grandpa Harper a few times, his warmth quickly made Jessie feel at ease.

Grandpa Harper patted Jessie on the back of her hand. "Jessie, Kevin is always busy with work, so he’s not familiar with things like this. It’s good for you to take him out more. Buy whatever you want, and let Kevin pay, understand?"

Kevin, standing nearby, was visibly exasperated, as if cartoon stress lines were about to appear above his head.

Was he really the biological grandchild? He certainly didn’t feel like it.

"No worries, Mr. Harper takes good care of me. Besides, I have money; he doesn’t need to pay for everything," Jessie laughed.

She wasn’t sure if Grandpa Harper’s words were polite or sincere, but people usually side with their own family.

"Mr. Harper?" Grandpa Harper looked suspiciously at Kevin. "Did this rascal make you call him that? You’re married now. No need to be so formal with each other."

Jessie and Kevin exchanged a look, and she quickly waved her hands to explain, "It’s not like that; I chose to call him that."

Grandpa Harper snorted, took Jessie’s hand directly, and walked upstairs, leaving his grandson behind.

"Big Brother!"

A voice called from behind. Daniel Harper, Kevin’s youngest brother, jogged over and couldn’t help but laugh when he saw Kevin holding groceries.

In his memory, from childhood to adulthood, Kevin had always appeared serious and cold. Unlike Kevin, the other brothers didn’t have the same aloof aura. Today, however, seeing Kevin with groceries, he actually seemed... more approachable. .com

"Daniel," Grandpa Harper called in a deliberately stern voice, though he too was surprised to see Kevin like this.

He didn’t oppose Kevin hiding his identity to test Jessie; this might even give Kevin a different perspective on life.

Daniel laughed heartily. "Grandpa, I really can’t help it. Big Brother looks too funny like this!"

"Alright, stop! Did you all forget what I told you earlier?" Grandpa Harper tapped his cane.

On their way here, he warned them not to reveal their identities and to cooperate well with Kevin’s plan of pretending to be poor.

He had always prided himself on being a good judge of character, and he was certain Jessie wasn’t someone who would covet money. But it was not enough for him to say so; Kevin had to realize it himself.

Only then did Daniel stop laughing.

Kevin’s mother, Claire Harper, was initially opposed to the marriage, as it seemed unreasonable to suddenly marry an unknown girl, but the old man insisted she was a good girl, and even her own son agreed to marry her.

Since her son agreed, she couldn’t say much else.

However, Kevin did mention that he had only registered the marriage with Jessie; he still wanted to continue observing and evaluating her. If Jessie proved to be as good as she seemed, he would willingly accept her.

Mrs. Harper agreed outwardly, but internally, she hoped Kevin might break up with Jessie. Even though the girl was nice, their social standing differed too much.

"Nice to meet you, I’m Jessie," Jessie introduced herself.

She hadn’t met Kevin’s family, so she wasn’t familiar with them. Kevin then introduced his family members one by one, "This is my father and mother..."

Jessie nodded, and under Grandpa Harper’s expectant gaze, she called out, "Hello, Dad and Mom."

Seeing her reactions, Kevin’s father, Aaron Harper, couldn’t help but smile, nodding in satisfaction. Despite feeling that his father’s decision was a bit rushed, he trusted the old man’s judgment and believed the girl wouldn’t turn out to be a bad choice.

Though Claire hadn’t fully accepted Jessie in her heart, she also managed a gentle smile and gave a small nod.

Kevin then introduced her to other family members before returning upstairs.

"I’ll prepare some fruit for everyone," Jessie said, putting on an apron and heading to the kitchen.

Grandpa Harper glanced around the cozy home, smiling in satisfaction. It was clearly Jessie’s doing, his grandson would never have the patience for something like this.

Daniel—being the youngest and liveliest member of the Harper family—quickly got familiar with Jessie. When the delicious smell of food wafted in, he almost drooled.

"Sis-in-law, your cooking smells so good. My big brother is really a lucky dog." free\we,bnovel.c o(m)

Jessie smiled and called Kevin to help.

"Kevin, could you come and help me carry the dishes?"

Daniel was ready to say his big brother had never done such chores, but then Kevin surprised him by stepping in to carry the dishes out.

His eyes widened in disbelief. His sister-in-law was incredible; she had actually gotten his brother to do something. Daniel wasn’t the only one surprised; the whole Harper family was in shock.

"Sis-in-law, I’ll follow you from now on!" Daniel was utterly impressed.

Soon, Laura and William Krut arrived with Luke.

Since Laura’s minor accident with Luke, William had been somewhat dissatisfied with her until he learned Jessie’s husband took care of most of the medical expenses. He instantly felt the urge to see what Kevin did for a living; perhaps he could gain a little favor.

Originally, William had assumed that Kevin was just a low-level manager, but meeting him in person left him stunned. Kevin carried a natural charisma, the kind of unmistakable authority that only a true leader possessed.

"You must be Mr. Harper?" William immediately put on a big smile, extending his hand.

Kevin’s expression was indifferent. "Uncle William."

He briefly shook hands with William and then stopped talking. It wasn’t out of rudeness but because William’s obsequious manner made him uncomfortable.

"Mom." free.webn\ove(l)(.)c(o)m

Laura nodded, surprised that her son-in-law looked much better in person than in photos. On top of that, he had helped with Luke’s medical expenses, which pleased her greatly.

Luke smiled at Kevin. "Hello, brother Kevin!"

Luke was adorable, with shiny, innocent eyes and a chubby face that invited pinching.

Kevin, thinking and acting on it, was surprised at how good it felt.

Kevin naturally had a cold demeanor, often making children cry at the sight of him. Yet, to his surprise, Luke was different, even reaching out, eager to be held by him.
