Chapter 21: Injury
"I had a client before who had connections with the hospital," Kevin said in a low voice.
Seeing this, Jessie nodded and glanced at the time. "Mr. Harper, you should head to work now. I’ll go up and check on my mom and Luke again."
"Okay."
As Kevin watched her figure disappear from view, he immediately got out of the car and got into his Maybach.
Jessie had a busy day taking care of Luke and running around to pay bills. She initially didn’t want her mom to return the money, knowing full well that her stepfather would definitely nag her mom about it endlessly.
Upon returning to the apartment, she discovered her mom had slipped a thousand dollars into her bag when she didn’t notice. Just then she got a text message from her mom.
"Jessie, now that you’re married, you must save your money and live well. Don’t worry about me," Laura said.
Seeing this message, Jessie’s eyes reddened. She replied with a simple "Okay" and started tidying up other parts of the house. Once she had everything organized, she was exhausted. She intended just to rest a bit on the couch but accidentally fell asleep.
When Kevin returned that evening, he opened the door to find Jessie asleep on the couch.
He frowned slightly. Didn’t he say that the living room was a public space and not for sleeping? Why was this woman doing it again?
Irritated, he stepped forward to wake her up but suddenly noticed that all the boxes in the living room were gone, replaced by decorations and arrangements.
Kevin scanned the room; the empty living room was now much warmer and full of homely comfort, which softened his gaze on Jessie.
Maybe Jessie was not that kind of person he had imagined. Perhaps she genuinely wanted a stable family life. She had agreed to marry him so quickly, possibly not out of calculation, but because she was looking for a sense of security after spending so long living under her stepfather’s roof.
After spending some time together, Kevin had slightly changed his opinion of Jessie. But still, he couldn’t fully trust her based on such a short period. Maybe she was just pretending for the time being. It would take time to see who she truly was.
Just as he was about to pick Jessie up to move her to the bedroom, she suddenly opened her eyes. Realizing she was in Kevin’s arms, her ears turned red.
"Mr. Harper... Sorry, I was too tired and accidentally fell asleep on the couch. It wasn’t on purpose..." Jessie explained, fumbling to free herself from Kevin’s embrace.
She remembered Kevin’s rule regarding no sleeping in the living room.
"Wait..." Kevin was about to set her down when her struggles left him unsteady.
"Bang!"
Their bodies lost control and fell to the floor. At the last moment, Kevin quickly changed positions and deliberately became Jessie’s cushion.
Jessie leaned against Kevin’s chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. Not feeling the pain she expected, she realized Kevin was protecting her.
"Mr. Harper, are you alright?" Jessie asked urgently. As she raised her head, she accidentally brushed Kevin’s chin with her lips.
"Sorry." Jessie’s face flushed. She carefully got off Kevin, but she accidentally touched his arm, making him wince in pain.
Kevin sat up, saying in a deep voice, "My arm got scraped accidentally."
"I’ll get the first aid kit for you."
After helping Kevin with the bandage, Jessie apologized, "I’m really sorry, Mr. Harper, it wasn’t intentional."
"It’s fine." Kevin shook his head and returned to his room.
He ran his fingers along his chin, where her lips brushed past, a flicker of emotion passing through his eyes before he finally locked the door.
During these days, Laura had been in the hospital taking care of Luke. Luckily, his injuries weren’t that severe, and he was discharged soon.
The weekend arrived quickly, and Jessie had already called Grandpa Harper. Not only would he come, but many of Kevin’s brothers would also be there. Including her mom’s side, they might need two or three tables, but fortunately, the living room was big enough to hold everyone.
The reason Grandpa Harper invited so many people was to officially introduce Jessie as the Harper Family’s daughter-in-law and to let everyone meet her.
With so many people, Jessie needed to buy a lot of groceries. Afraid she wouldn’t be able to carry everything herself, she specifically asked Kevin to join her in the morning.
Jessie had woken up Kevin early. He suppressed his annoyance and snapped. "I’ll be out in a minute."
Once Kevin responded, Jessie stopped knocking.
"Alright, Mr. Harper, I’ve made your favorite jam. Let’s have breakfast before we go shopping."
"Sure."
Kevin glanced at the clock; it was just past six in the morning. He didn’t expect Jessie to be up so early.
Then again, considering she had to prepare so many dishes, she wouldn’t manage if she woke up late.
Jessie’s willingness to get up early showed she valued this meeting and respected his family. Kevin felt quite satisfied with her attitude.
When he came out, Jessie was already waiting with a plate of toast and jam, her smile as warm as the breakfast she’d prepared.
"I used extra fruit in the jam; it should taste good. Give it a try."
Kevin had tasted Jessie’s jam before, and it was indeed delicious. He trusted her to cook the home-style dishes well, too.
"Mr. Harper, is your arm better?" Jessie asked, glancing at his arm with a concerned look.
Kevin shook his head slightly. "It’s almost healed; don’t worry about it."
"That’s good."
After breakfast, Jessie put on a jacket and motioned for him. "Mr. Harper, I’m ready. Let’s get going."
Kevin nodded, picked up his car keys, and left with Jessie.
Jessie had made a list of ingredients she needed for the evening meal, marking everything they needed, which made Kevin appreciate her efficiency.
Although Kevin hadn’t known Jessie for long, he was genuinely impressed by her attention to detail in everyday life.
Jessie bought a lot of groceries, and Kevin carried them. Although he worked out regularly, he couldn’t help but feel a bit tired after so much shopping.
"Mr. Harper, are you tired? We’ll be home soon; just hang in there a bit longer," Jessie comforted him.
Kevin looked at her calmly energetic demeanor and thought the saying was true: women are always full of energy when shopping.
When they returned to the Quiet River Community, they saw Grandpa Harper just arriving downstairs.
"Grandpa!"
Grandpa Harper turned to see Jessie, his face lighting up with a smile as he watched them get out of the car together.
"Did you go shopping with Kevin?"
