Chapter 20: Blame

On the road, Kevin read Jessie’s message and frowned slightly.

An accident?

He called her, and Jessie thought he might have something urgent to say.

“Mr. Harper, is there anything you need?”

Just by hearing her voice, he could sense her exhaustion.

"Which hospital are you in? Maybe I can help you out with anything."

Hearing this, she felt a surge of warmth in her heart. Although he often seemed a bit cold, he still reassured her with his invisible support at critical times like these.

He was completely unlike William, who was still nowhere to be found at times like this.

However, she still refused, "No need, Mr. Harper. You’ve already helped my friend a lot, so I’ll handle this myself. Don’t trouble yourself."

Hearing the insistence in her tone, Kevin didn’t insist and only replied in a low voice.

"Just give me the hospital address. I won’t insist since you’re determined, but just let me know if there’s anything you need."

"Okay." fre ewebno(v)e\l.(c)om

After sending him the address, Jessie hung up the phone.

Kevin looked at the location on his phone and ordered, "Find out how her brother got hit."

"Yes." The bodyguard nodded in response.

The light in the operating room went out. As the doctor walked out, Laura immediately approached him to ask.

"How is everything?"

The doctor removed his mask. "The surgery was successful. His leg is fine now, but remember to settle the medical expenses."

"Okay." Laura nodded, tears in her eyes. "As long as he’s fine, that’s all that matters."

With the surgery over, the only concern left was the cost.

The hospital allowed only one person to stay, so Jessie had to leave first.

Returning to the Quiet River Community, she opened the door and found Kevin still awake in the living room.

"Mr. Harper, why are you still awake?" she asked curiously, placing her bag on the couch.

She recalled that he usually would have gone to his room by this time.

Surprisingly, he was still sitting there. .com

Kevin opened his eyes and asked in a deep voice, "Why are you back?"

"The hospital allows only one person to stay overnight," Jessie said, looking visibly downcast.

"How was the surgery?"

"The surgery costs five thousand dollars, and my mom is struggling financially."

She only explained briefly before going back to her room to sleep. She had no energy left to spare for a longer conversation with him.

On the other hand, Kevin received a surveillance video from the bodyguard showing Jessie’s brother, Luke, running around. However, the driver in the video was clearly overspeeding, so he was mostly responsible for this accident.

After saving it, he sent a message to the hospital director, glanced at Jessie’s room, and then returned to his own room.

The next morning, Jessie got up to make breakfast, intending to bring it to Luke and Laura at the hospital. But just as she began, Kevin’s room door swung open.

She looked at his neatly-dressed appearance and casually said, "Morning, Mr. Harper. Are you off to work so early today?"

Kevin shook his head and sat at the dining table. "I’ll take you to the hospital today."

"Why?" She was puzzled, but she continued packing up breakfast.

"I heard you mention that the surgery was expensive yesterday, so I made some arrangements with the hospital. They said they could lend us some help, and I also got some additional information," he replied, handing his phone with the surveillance video over to Jessie.

Jessie was surprised at how he managed to get the surveillance footage from the accident. Before she could ask, Kevin spoke again.

"I also noticed that the driver is the one responsible for the accident. Since it’s his fault, he should cover some of the medical bills. Along with a few things I arranged with the hospital, you should be able to save three to four thousand." His tone was calm, but Jessie was already stunned.

She had never thought Kevin was capable of saving her thousands of dollars just like this.

"I’ve already arranged for him to meet you at the hospital, so I’ll take you there today."

"Okay. Thank you, Mr. Harper," she said sincerely, bowing to him.

She truly appreciated how he always stepped in when she needed him most—something William, her stepdad, William, had never done for her mother.

Just before she reached Luke’s room at the hospital, Jessie heard a man harshly scolding someone from inside.

"How could you be so careless with the child? You’re at home all day and you don’t even have to work—all you need to do is housework and watch over the kid. You have one job, and you can’t even do it right! What’s the point of having you around?

"Do you even understand how hard I have to work to earn five thousand dollars? I’ve had enough! You need to get that money yourself, whether from your daughter or whoever else. I’m not paying a single cent!"

Having reached her limits, Laura shouted back, "Isn’t Luke your son, too? How is this Jessie’s responsibility? She has been freeloading off of me for so long, it’s about time she paid up!"

Hearing him bring up Jessie, Kevin’s expression darkened. He was about to push the door open and confront the person inside, but Jessie held onto his sleeve and shook her head.

This was her family’s affair, and she did not want Kevin to see this humiliating side of her life.

Kevin initially wanted to speak about this, but seeing her expression, he decided not to and only turned to walk away quietly.

Jessie pushed open the door, and the room fell silent. William snorted, glaring at her before leaving.

Laura quickly held Jessie’s hand. "Jessie, don’t listen to his nonsense. I’ll handle the issue with the bill, so you don’t need to worry."

Just as she finished speaking, the director knocked on the door and entered the room. He gave Laura the bill.

"Mrs. Krut, there’s still one thousand dollars due for the medical costs."

The director said, deliberately glancing at Jessie.

‘This is the person Young Master himself asked us to look after. Since this hospital belongs to the Harper family, how could I refuse?’

Laura was taken aback, looking at the director in confusion. On the other hand, Jessie seized the moment and took the bill.

"Thank you, Director."

She briefly explained the situation to Laura, who was very satisfied with the son-in-law she had not met yet. It turned out that he could be reliable at these critical moments, and he probably did this for Jessie’s sake.

"Mom, you go and pay what’s left of the bill first. I’ll go and find my husband."

"Okay, okay."

Jessie soon found Kevin in the parking lot, sitting in the car and looking at his phone with a stern look.

"Mr. Harper, thank you so much."

Upon hearing her voice, Kevin came back to his senses. He shook his head and said, "It’s nothing."

For him, he only needed to say a single word to settle this matter.

Jessie smiled. She really owed him a lot now.

However, she had a sudden thought.

"The Harper family owns this hospital, right? So how did you manage to sway the director?"
