Chapter 19: Car Accident
Lilian nodded, completely oblivious to the expression on Steve’s face, who looked like he was about to break down.
Meanwhile, the decorations that Kevin had sent someone to buy had arrived. Looking at the several large boxes in the living room, Jessie was stunned and somewhat surprised.
"Why did you buy so much? How much did all of this cost? Did you bargain?"
Kevin had arranged all of this through Butler John at the Harper mansion, and naturally, he had not bothered to bargain.
He glanced at the bill; it was thirty thousand dollars.
Thirty thousand dollars for all of these things seemed like a good bargain compared to his usual standards. However, it still didn’t feel right to bring the price up with Jessie.
So, he casually threw out a fake number. "Two hundred dollars."
Jessie pursed her lips, slightly dissatisfied with the price. However, considering the sheer number of things Kevin had bought, this total amount seemed reasonable enough.
"What’s wrong? Not satisfied?" Kevin frowned slightly, observing her reaction.
She shook her head and opened one of the boxes. "It’s just that you bought a lot. I’ll pay you back later. After all, these were all things I had suggested buying."
Jessie’s polite and distant manner inexplicably made him feel uncomfortable. Did he lack that bit of money?
"No need; it’s all expenses for this household." He shook his head in refusal.
She didn’t insist, remembering the last time when he accused her of not involving him in household matters.
"Mr. Harper, could you please help me carry these out?" she asked, struggling against the weight of the boxes.
Kevin stayed silent. He simply stepped in and began moving them.
The decorations matched her taste perfectly, each detail right on target. She sneaked a glance at her husband, who was earnestly helping her. She was surprised at how attentive he could be.
She paused when she took out a clock from inside the box, while Kevin remained unaware of her reaction.
She held up the clock and looked at him curiously. "Are you sure all of this only costs two hundred dollars? I’ve seen this watch online before; it was at least a thousand dollars."
Despite how much she liked this style, she had never considered buying it since it was so expensive.
Kevin’s brain raced, and he finally explained, "It’s probably a fake. After all, I bought it at a stall."
Jessie felt like his explanation was a bit forced, but she didn’t say much in the end, only nodding before continuing to unpack.
She decorated a small area according to her preferences, but she still decided to get his opinion. "How does it look?"
He had never been too concerned about these things, but looking at her arrangement, he couldn’t help but nod in appreciation.
"Not bad."
Surprised by Kevin’s praise, she covered her mouth and said, "Mr. Harper, I never expected you to compliment someone."
During their time together, she had thought he only had a cold personality, but he seemed much friendlier today.
"If something is done well, of course I’ll praise it. I’m not someone who can’t distinguish right from wrong," Kevin explained.
"Of course, of course." Jessie nodded in agreement.
Checking the time, she quickly realized it was already late. She quickly grabbed her jacket from the couch and hurried out.
"Mr. Harper, I’m running late, so can you take care of the dishes please?"
She immediately rushed out after saying that, leaving Kevin looking blankly at the dishes in the sink.
When she arrived at the store, she started to wonder whether he really could wash the dishes. She pondered for a while before sending him a message.
【Mr. Harper, if you’re busy at work, you can leave the cleaning for me after I finish my shift.】
Kevin replied quickly.
【I’ve finished washing them.】
He even sent a photo to her—not only of the washed utensils, but also showing that he had cleaned the living room until it was spotless.
【Mr. Harper, you did a great job of cleaning.】
Back at their place, Kevin remained silent; he just nodded at the cleaner as she left. Then he returned to his phone and typed a simple reply: “Thank you.”
On the other hand, Jessie was naturally unaware that her husband had hired a cleaner to do the cleaning.
However, she found Kevin increasingly unpredictable.
Business was slower today with the store opening late, which left her feeling a bit down as if something bad was about to happen.
It wasn’t until evening after she had closed the shop that she got a call from her mom, Laura.
Without much thought, she answered and heard Laura’s anxious voice.
"Jess, can you come to the hospital now? Luke got hit by a car and is currently in surgery."
Laura burst into tears as she spoke.
Jessie was stunned but quickly tried to comfort Laura, "Mom, don’t worry. Which hospital are you at now? I’ll come right away."
After Laura sent her the hospital’s location, Jessie rushed over to the hospital, panting as she rode her bike. When she got into the building, she saw Laura sitting in the hallway.
She hurried over. Upon seeing Jessie, Laura quickly stood up as if she had found a much-needed assurance.
"Jessie..."
"What happened?"
Upon mentioning the incident, Laura couldn’t stop crying. "I took Luke to buy groceries, and he ran around on the road and accidentally got hit by a car. They are still trying to save him in the operating room."
Looking at the surgery room with the red light, Jessie patted Laura’s shoulder. She looked around and didn’t see her stepfather, William, anywhere.
"Has Uncle William not come?"
Laura sighed, her eyes swollen. "No. I called him, but he ended the call before I could even speak, saying he was still working at the company. I sent him a message, but he still hasn’t replied."
Jessie was furious. "He has never worked overtime before, but at such a crucial time, he’s suddenly busy. Isn’t Luke his son? At a time like this, is work more important than his own son’s life?"
Laura shook her head, wiping the tears from the corner of her eyes. "Forget it, maybe he really is busy."
Seeing Laura defending him, Jessie chose not to say much more.
It seemed like she wouldn’t be able to go back today.
She sent Kevin a message, briefly explaining the situation and then turned to Laura.
"Mom, did the doctor mention how much Luke’s surgery is going to cost?"
Laura’s face seemed to pale further at this question, lowering her head to respond.
"Five thousand dollars."
"So much?" Jessie was even more shocked.
First, there was Lilian’s incident, and now, Luke also got into an accident. She finally understood why she had been feeling restless recently.
"Jess, don’t worry. Your stepfather and I have some savings together, and I’ve also saved some money myself. I didn’t ask you to come for money; I just want you here so I can feel more at ease."
"Mom, Luke is also my little brother. There’s no way I wouldn’t help. If there’s anything I can do, of course I will." Jessie said, gently embracing Laura.
