Chapter 18: A Helping Hand

"Nope." Kevin’s tone was cold.

Seeing the change in his expression, Jessie hurriedly explained, "I’m sorry, I’m just a little scared."

"What are you afraid of?" He looked at her, a bit puzzled.

While most people would be eager to marry into a wealthy family, she was actually afraid of it?

Jessie sighed. "I just want to live a simple life, without getting caught up in anything complicated. But what my college classmate said made me feel uneasy."

Maybe she didn’t truly understand what rich people thought, perhaps they did sometimes enjoy coming to remote roads.

She didn’t dwell on that anymore, instead giving Kevin a chance to speak up.

"College classmate? Is it the one you met at the banquet last time? Why would he come to visit you?"

Jessie didn’t notice the probing tone in Kevin’s voice, truthfully recounting what had happened today.

After hearing her explanation, he realized he had misunderstood her. Moreover, the incident involving Lilian gave him a sense of déjà vu, as if he had heard of it before.

Jessie sighed, propping up her head and said, "I heard that suit probably costs at least one hundred thousand dollars, and I don’t know if Lilian can come up with that much money. I don’t have that much cash on hand to help her either."

Kevin didn’t say anything.

After they finished eating, Jessie cleaned up the dishes.

As she was washing the dishes, Kevin walked over and said in a deep voice, "If you and your friend can’t come up with that much money, just let me know. I have some on hand that should be able to help."

Jessie was touched by his gesture and nodded in response, "Okay, thank you, Mr. Harper. Let’s just wait for that man to state the price first. If we can gather enough money, then we won’t bother you for help."

"Okay."

After a brief thank you, she went back to her room.

They had only been married for a short time, so Kevin’s willingness to help her already meant a great deal to her.

Kevin watched as Jessie closed the door behind her. Then, he turned off the living room lights and went back to his room.

He picked up his phone and made a call. "Bryan, I need to talk to you."

Bryan was surprised that Kevin was calling him so late. "Is something wrong for you to call me at this time?"

"How much does it cost to compensate for the suit you wore today?"

Bryan didn’t understand why he was suddenly asking about this. However, he truthfully replied, "It’s not the most expensive suit, but it still cost around sixty thousand dollars. I called to ask if they could repair it, and they said they could only if I cover the cleaning and transportation fees, which come to about thirty thousand dollars."

Upon hearing this, Kevin explained, "The person who accidentally bumped into you today is a friend to a friend of mine. Is her name Lilian?"

Bryan looked at the business card. "Yes, it’s Lilian Brown."

"Then it’s her."

"You called me just over this? Don’t worry; for your sake, I’ll just ask her to pay for the transportation fees, which is about ten thousand dollars. It’s neither too much nor too little, just enough to be a lesson for her to be more careful in the future."

For Kevin and Bryan, ten thousand or twenty thousand was just numbers that they didn’t care about.

"Alright. Thank you for your help."

Bryan was feeling a bit sleepy, but Kevin’s actions quickly woke him right up.

“I didn’t expect you to call me at this time just because of this. Who’s this ‘friend’ of yours? You wouldn’t do anything like this if it’s just an ordinary relationship.”

Seeing that Bryan had figured it out, Kevin explained to him, "She helped my grandpa at the hospital before. He ended up liking her and even ordered me to take good care of her. Maybe he even thought of a name for our future grandkid already."

Bryan sympathized with Kevin as he heard this. "That’s not a surprise. Our elders are always hoping that we can get married and start a family soon. To them, being surrounded by kids and grandkids is the best kind of life."

In a way, Bryan was speaking the truth. Kevin had been busy with work for a long while and never had time to think about things of starting a family. Due to this, his grandpa was so eager for him to get married that he would show up to his office every day, even offering to the whole Harper family that whoever gave birth to his great-grandson would receive a certain amount of money.

Especially when he married Jessie, Grandpa Harper even wanted to hand over his all assets directly to her. If Kevin had not refused it strongly, those villas and estates they had in the northern part of city would have all gone to Jessie’s name.

"Your grandpa is really bold. He was hoping you would marry a girl he just met for the first time. But he is always good at judging people. You should probably trust him."

Kevin didn’t say anything more, he just wanted to observe Jessie a little longer. Even though they were already legally married, he hadn’t made any plans to spend the rest of his life with her.

The next day, Jessie woke up early, feeling uneasy, as if something was about to happen.

When she finished preparing breakfast, Kevin also opened the door.

"Good morning, Mr. Harper." fre.eweb novel\.c om

She wasn’t feeling great today, so she only made a simple breakfast. However, Kevin didn’t say anything as he noticed her expression.

"What’s wrong? Did you not sleep well last night?"

"Yeah, I just feel a little restless." She sat down wearily, rubbing her temples.

He thought she was referring to what had happened to Lilian yesterday, so he reassured her.

"Don’t worry; I already had a discussion about Ms Brown’s matter for you. The man only wants a ten-thousand-dollar compensation."

Ten thousand dollars was not a big problem for Jessie and Lilian.

Jessie bit into her bread, looking at him with surprise. "How did you resolve it?"

Kevin explained calmly, "I had a client who also got a coffee spilled on him yesterday. When I heard your friend’s story, I realized it was a bit familiar. So, I decided to check with my client, and fortunately he was actually the same person. He said that out of the acquaintance he had with me, Ms Brown won’t need to compensate that much."

Upon hearing this, Jessie smiled gratefully. "Really? That’s great! Thank you so much, Mr. Harper."

She felt relieved about that issue, not expecting such a lucky coincidence.

She immediately called Lilian, "Lilian, the person you spilled coffee on said we only need to pay him ten thousand dollars. We should be able to come up with that together easily. There’s no need to worry, that man happened to be my husband’s client, and my husband had confirmed everything with him."

Lilian also sighed in relief, grateful. "Thank you so much, Jessie. Pass my thanks to your husband too and I’d invite him to dinner sometime!"

"No problem," Jessie replied.

While eating breakfast, Kevin caught sight of Jessie’s smile, and without even realizing it, his own lips curled into a soft and gentle smile.

At the same time, Lilian relayed the good news to Steve.

"Boss, I’m so lucky! The man I spilled coffee on turned out to be a client of Jessie’s husband, and he said I don’t need to compensate him much. My wallet is finally safe."

Steve nodded initially, but his expression froze when he heard the second half of what she said.

"What did you say? Jessie has a husband?"
