Chapter 51: Not The Same Girl

Chapter 51: Not The Same Girl

Marcella was shocked to see the expression on Tony’s face. He looked terrifying as if he was ready to hurt her if he pleased.

Was it because she brought up Cindy? That must be some divine love if he gets this mad for her.

"I’m sorry you had to settle for me, Tony. But it was a decision you made. I might be your wife but you cannot humiliate me in public like this. Let go of me," she said in a tone not shouting and not whispering.

Her eyes were focused and leaving the anger and disappointment she was feeling, she tried to be strong.

Tony looked into her eyes. He had never seen such a bland expression on her face. She looked distant. It was then he realized that he was pinning her up the wall.

He’s seen her strength and oftentimes forgets that she’s not physically as strong as him. But she’s not weak. She could get out of his hold by hurting him. She learned some martial arts when younger. She knows exactly what to do to get out of this position.

Yet, she was using her word. She does not want to hurt him.

He let go of her. He was not going to hurt her. He was taken aback when she implied that he had some sort of relationship with Cindy.

He got mad that she misunderstands everything he does and never tries to understand him. She might have seen him with Cindy and her first thought was he was having an illicit relationship with her.

Why didn’t she think twice before talking? Didn’t he give her the benefit of the doubt even though she was running around with Louis Fletcher without her ring on? Why can’t she spare him the same?

He didn’t know what hurt him more. Was it her doubting him? Or was it the indifferent attitude she was showing?

"As I told you before, Cindy is a pal of mine. No, she was a pal of mine. I broke it up today. I won’t meet her again," he told her the truth hoping she would accept it and be relieved.

Marcella pressed her lips. "Good," she said. "The last thing I need is dealing with your women. My father never let my mother worry about that. Guess, my dad really was one in a million," she mumbled.

She grew up seeing how faithful her father was and imagined all men are like her father. Aiden proved her wrong and she thought he was an exception. Tony’s the same too.

Guess, her father was the real exception.

"My women?" Tony blocked her.

As long as he remembered, she was the only girl he liked. He’s daydreamed about her and had spent countless sleepless nights because thoughts about her kept him awake. Ever since his balls dropped, she was the only woman who could make his senses go haywire just by thinking about her.

And here she is... talking about his "women".

There literally is no woman for him. He’s never been with a woman before when she had...

It was hard for him to come to terms with that fact but he did. He cannot control her not when she was not his. He thought marriage will change the dynamics between them but it only made everything worse.

She used to like him and now she just hates him from the bottom of her heart. It was too much for him to bear.

He tried to talk to her but she was not listening. He couldn’t figure out how he could make her listen to him. Like a blinded horse, she is believing only what she wants to believe.

Marella exhaled deeply. "Whatever you do, do it privately. Don’t make me deal with it," she said.

Even in that situation, she couldn’t be harsh with him. She didn’t want to control him. That way, he will leave her be.

Maybe it was her hate for the Romano family. Or, she was affected seeing how Paul treated Tony. She didn’t blame Tony for his ambitions. In a way, he too is pitiful to marry her for his ambitions. He even had to give up his love for his ambitions.

She cannot give him love but she can let him have love wherever he gets it. What other choice does she have? Apparently, all men cheat. She can sulk and make a big deal out of it or she can brush it off and handle her businesses.

She chose the latter.

Her choice will bring her pain. She might have to cry herself to sleep knowing that her husband has another woman in his heart. But still, she didn’t want to control him.

She’s never going to have love. She’s never going to have the marriage her parents had. All she can hope for is to raise Joey like her sister wanted to.

"Privately?" he asked, his entire face twitching.

He couldn’t believe the words coming out of her mouth. He was enraged.

"If I have permission to have a "private" life, would that go for you too?" he asked.

Is she giving him permission to cheat because she wants to cheat?

Marcella sighed. He must hate being married to her. He finds even her voice annoying. But she was tired. "No, Tony. This is a man’s world and there are different sets of rules for men and women. I’ve promised you I will give you everything as a wife and that includes fidelity," she explained.

"Ha!" Tony scoffed and took a step back. "You’re...unbelievable! What happened to you, Marcella?" he asked.

Why is she talking like some battered woman who didn’t have any power? What happened to the Marcella DeAngelo he knew and fell in love with?

"I’m tired, Tony. I don’t know what I am doing. I didn’t sleep the whole night as Joey kept on crying. I unnecessarily made a trip to the house to check on him. It’s late and I’m hungry. This is me, Tony," she spread out her hands and scoffed.

"A fool. An idiot. A failure. I’m not very nice to be around. My only worth is that I knew most of the deals my father made. That’s all. If you want to back off from the deal, please give me a head start. I’ll give you the codex. I’ll find some other way to keep Joey. And... I do not want to lose my pay, Tony. Let me go."

She walked away.

Tony watched her walking with a slouch on her back. He was so mad at her just a moment ago and now he was left bewildered.

She’s not the girl he knew. The girl he knew could face the entire world alone and win. The woman in front of him looked the same as that girl but when he looked closely, he could see that she was barely holding on.

She was not the same.

What happened to her?

And... the truth that hurt him the most was...

She does not love him one bit.
