Chapter 52: Past Incident
Chapter 52: Past Incident
Marcella returned to her station. She sat on her seat and she couldn’t concentrate. She could see her other colleagues looking at her in annoyance as she was not doing her job.
"Glo," she called for her friend who was busy doing nothing. It was not their busiest time.
Gloria glared at her and turned her face away.
"Glo, what happened?" she pulled her sleeve.
"Don’t touch me, liar," Gloria patted her hand away.
Marcella tried to talk to Gloria but she didn’t relent. The tears she was holding back till then spilled out.
Gloria rushed to her side.
"Hey, Mars...come on. Why are you crying? I was just pretending... Well, I am mad at you but don’t cry..."
Gloria brought her to the break room and hugged Marcella until she composed herself.
"What’s wrong, Mars? What are you... Your husband came looking for you," Gloria said holding her hand. "He was in a hurry. Did he... Did he hurt you?"
Marcella’s tears that stopped started flowing once again. Gloria was so concerned for her and she knew that Gloria would start a war for her. "I’m sorry, Glo. I am a very bad person... I don’t deserve a friend like you..."
"Oh, dear..." Gloria patted her back. "Stop dripping your snot all over me and tell me what bothers you."
Marcella wiped her face and Gloria offered her a hot cup of coffee. Marcella drank it slowly and Gloria waited patiently for her. Having something to fill her stomach improved her mood significantly.
"I have a lot to tell you, Glo..." Marcella took in a deep breath.
"I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before... I am married. Recently and... I have a godson I’m looking after."
"You’re married and you already have a son?" Gloria asked.
"My nephew...My sister passed away recently and..."
"I’m sorry..." Gloria held Marcella’s hands closely. "I’m sorry for your loss, poor girl. So, that’s why you were absent last week... You’re an annoying b*tch. You could have called me..."
"I’m sorry..." Marcella bowed her head. "I didn’t mean to hurt you. It’s just..."
"You decided to suffer alone, didn’t you?" Gloria sighed. "So typical of you... It’s not good for you, Mars. Sorrow halves when you share."
Marcella fidgeted with her hands. "I didn’t want to be a bother."
Gloria hit Marcella hard on her thigh. "Being bothersome is what friends are for!"
Marcella rubbed her thigh. The place where Gloria hit her stung. "And there is another important thing you should know about me..."
"What?" Gloria leaned forward. The disappointment on her face was replaced with curiosity.
"What Cindy was talking about in the stall... About Don DeAngelo and~"
"I wanted to slap her then and there. I would have if you were not holding me back!" Gloria interjected Marcella.
"What?" Marcella asked. It looked like Gloria had an opinion about her father and she wanted to hear it first before revealing the truth.
"My husband told me this story, right? Don’t tell anyone. Or do... I don’t care," Gloria shrugged.
Marcella only got more curious.
"When he was a rookie cop~"
"Your husband is a cop? I thought he owned a pawn shop?" Marcella interjected.
"He was a cop. He quit because of Don DeAngelo," Gloria said.
Marcella’s heart started to race. She had a feeling this was not going to be a good story about her father. That’s the dilemma she faced for a long time. When she meets her father’s acquaintances, they would treat her father like a gracious king and savior as they’ve benefitted greatly from her father. But the other side was not that bright. Her father’s darkness overpowered the good he did.
"There was this case. My husband was one of those who were present when a bereaved mother came for a complaint. Her seventeen-year-old daughter was brutally assaulted by three university students. Her daughter was in the hospital fighting for her life. Those beasts had ravaged her and left her to die. The cops all listened to her complaint and were getting ready to meet the victim. Until..." Gloria started whispering the rest of the story.
"The mother gave the names of the attackers. She knew them for they were the boys in her neighborhood. Hearing their names, the cops went back to their seats and started making phone calls asking the mother to wait..."
"Why?" Marcella asked. She had an idea why and her heart started to race as she remember a past memory—the one that made her question her father’s business.
In an empty parking lot, she saw her father’s men brutally beating three young men and leaving them to die. She tried to stop those men from attacking them but they didn’t listen to her. ’Don’s orders, Bambi. We should follow it.’ was all they said.
She asked her father about it. He didn’t give her any explanation and that was the first time she saw rage on his face as he shouted at her to mind her business.
She later learned that those youngsters who got beaten were all the sons of higher officials in the police department. A few days later, those officers started an investigation into her father. She thought her father attacked their sons to intimidate the officers to stop investigating him.
She was disappointed.
Till then, she believed her father was doing good. She didn’t think that her father would hurt others to hide his misdeeds. But that incident was one among the many that formed a crack in her relationship with her father.
"They were the sons of the heads of the departments. One was the superintendent of police’s son. And guess what? This woman’s daughter was not their only victim. There were few others and... Anyway, the girl in the hospital died and somehow her dying declaration was "lost"..."
"My God!" Marcella leaned on the wall.
She could fill up the rest of the story. The mother would have been devastated seeing her daughter’s killers didn’t get justice and must have sought help from her father.
Her father didn’t mind the laws of the nation. He followed his set of rules. Hurting a girl child is pretty up far on his list of sins against humanity.
To know that someone hurt a girl child the same age as his daughter would have angered him to infinity.
So, that was the reason he hurt those sons of b*tches not caring for who their fathers were.
Law didn’t help the victim. The corrupted people who had to uphold the law helped those monsters, by tying the hands of the lady of justice.
Her father took the law into his hands to get justice for the sake of the victim.
