Chapter 196: Correcting His Wrong
Chapter 196: Correcting His Wrong
Tony got home happily. He didn’t forget to buy a bouquet of roses. He had a feeling that Stella would take Marcella’s side. Women like to stick together when it comes to husband issues.
Just like he predicted, Stella blamed him for Marcella’s irrational behavior. He felt betrayed for opening up, but then he decided to listen. When he listened to Stella explain where it all went wrong, it all made sense.
He was in the wrong!
Tony parked the car and got inside the house. Her car was in the garage and she must be home. Lately, she was traveling long distances and sometimes she’d be home only at dinner time. He was happy she was home today.
His lips curved to a smile, seeing her walking out of the kitchen wiping her hands in the towel. She must have heard his car and wanted to greet him. Seeing the big bunch of roses in his hand, her face lit up.
Aww, she’s so beautiful!
She rushed to him and jumped on him. Hugging him around his shoulders, she kissed him. "You’re home!" She couldn’t help her smile.
He got her the bouquet and that made her happy. Rather than getting the flowers that made her happy, she hugged him so tightly and kissed him again.
It’s not the flowers, is it? She is happy because I thought of her when I bought these roses.
"I cooked your favorites today," she smiled.
"Can’t wait," he held her close to him. She was warm and smelled like food. He could feel her smile on his shoulder.
He used to observe every single expression on her face. He didn’t remember when he stopped caring much about it. Was it after he knew he had her heart and soul? No, it was a little later than that. Seeing her in his home, on his bed, in his garden, day after day, he got used to it. He almost forgot the days he yearned for her.
What can he say? He too fell prey to basic human behavior.
Tony watched as she got to the kitchen with a skip to her step. He etched the delight in her eyes when she smelled the roses. That twinkle in her eyes was worth every gold on earth.
Joey heard him and rushed out of the room. He was in the playroom and wanted to show the fort he built. Tony wanted to take a shower first but Joey dragged him to the playroom. He smiled seeing the pillow fort Joey had built. A strong wind would blow the fort down. Seeing the pride on Joey’s face, Tony praised him.
Joey’s fort although was not strong, had space for each of them. His mother had a pink pillow and he had a blue pillow. Joey’s favorite color was yellow and he had the biggest space in his castle.
Tony joined his son and helped expand the fort. He decided to get bedsheets from the closet. As he walked there, his lips curved remembering the days Marcella would build forts. She called it a castle. Don would play the mean dragon guarding her castle.
He noticed that Marcella had started packing. He didn’t see those suitcases in the morning; she must have done the packing today. Maybe that was why she stayed home today. She was leaving for her cousin’s wedding in a week. It was so like her to pack a week earlier.
He checked his pocket. He needed to break the surprise to her.
He checked her closet for the bedsheets. He had forgotten where she kept them. It had been a while since he helped her with household chores. After they moved here, they had help and from then on, he gradually stopped helping her. When they lived in a small apartment, they shared everything. It was in the back of his mind that she too was working and so he helped her.
It was wrong of him to think that she was at home. She was a homemaker, yes. But she was working more these days. Although they had help, this was a big house and she managed everything including the finances, bank statements, and even the taxes. As if that was not enough, she researches various areas for his sake.
She must be exhausted. But she never complained; not even once. He received not one complaint—not from her, not from others. She was handling everything perfectly.
He didn’t remember thanking her or appreciating her.
He was playing with Joey for some time and Marcella came there. "Come in, Princess," he gave a bow.
"Let me take a shower first," she said.
Tony got up and brought her inside. "You smell perfect!" he hugged her close. Joey jumped on her and joined in the group hug. Although he loved playing with Tony, he was close to Marcella. He didn’t like it when Tony hugged her. That little boy would sneak inside.
After playing for some time, they went for dinner. After a long time, Tony helped her wash the dishes and put over the leftovers in the refrigerator. He offered to read for Joey. Joey sleeps better when he listens to bedtime stories.
When Tony came into their bedroom, Marcella had already taken a shower and changed. She was wearing a chiffon negligee and he stopped to look at her once again.
It was "that" night--the night he was allowed to touch her. She reminded him at least twice in the morning. He didn’t want to come home for that reason.
But Stella made him realize something-- Marcella was not doing it for her sake alone. She was doing it for both of them. Yes, she was a little controlling about it, but he could have been a sport about it and handled it differently.
Before he went into the bathroom, he slapped her butt. She jumped and screamed as she didn’t expect that.
"Tony!" she stomped her foot and rushed to attack him.
Chuckling to her reaction, he got into the bathroom.
When he got to the bedroom, she was sitting on the bed with a book in her hand. Seeing him, she placed the book down.
It was usually this moment that would bring a sinking feeling to his heart. Her insistence on this issue made him feel little. It hurt his pride although he didn’t accept it even in his heart.
The fault probably was with him. Maybe he was not enough. She didn’t get pregnant because of him.
This was the root of his anger. He realized it only today.
Rather than getting into the bed dropping the towel and doing "it" mechanically, he decided to change it.
"What book are you reading? Read some for me..."
Like a child, he lay on her lap. He closed his eyes as her fingers caressed his hair. She did that so naturally.
Yeah, heaven... This is heaven...
