Chapter 195: Worst Thing That Could Happen To A Couple
Stella picked her coat up and pondered whether she should wear it or not. This usually becomes her dilemma in that time between winter and spring. She considered that time much worse than the fall.
She decided not to wear the coat. It was cold in the morning and so she wore a thick coat and now it had turned a bit hot. Her coat would be too stuffy. But it still was cold and she could not go outside
With a sigh, she picked up her purse and coat. She thought of checking on Tony. They weren’t busy the past week and she was told Tony still stayed in the office. He’s been making odd mistakes in the office too. The rumor around the office was that he had problems at home. She didn’t think it would be true.
Why would everyone think that when a man acts different, his wife must be the reason? Isn’t that misogynistic?
Some even blamed Marcella for cheating on Tony. Each day, the name of the man changes but one name came up frequently—John Emerson. She would want to slap some sense into Bertha’s hollow brain when she talked without any limit. No one knows Marcella. How could they talk so badly about her at the same time they shamelessly eat the muffins she brings?
Tony was in his office. She could see his face thanks to his wife who visited often with muffins and cleaned his room. He was staring at the floor. He looked dejected and as if he didn’t even have the strength to hold up his head, he was supporting his head with his hands.
At once glace, he looked defeated.
"Not leaving yet?" Stella asked.
She had to ask twice to grab his attention and had to repeat it once more for him to hear her.
"Yeah... yeah..." Tony said looking for something.
"You are wearing your suit. Your coat is with the..." she pointed at the coat hanger in the office.
"Ah... yes..." Tony nodded and tried to smile.
Stella could see that Tony indeed was not fine. He was so out of it. She had seen him like this in the past but after his wedding, he would be too excited to go home. Even if there was trouble, he would find his way home as his wife was his problem solver.
Stella too wondered if his wife was the problem.
She placed her belongings on the table nearby. She got into Tony’s office room and closed the door.
"Talk," she said blocking his way.
"What do you... mean?" Tony asked.
There were dark circles around his eyes. He must be suffering. Her motherly instinct kicked in.
"If it is hard to talk to your wife about it, talk to me," Stella said.
"I don’t know what you mean," Tony tried to pass Stella.
Stella put her foot firmly on the floor and didn’t let him push her. She had grown sons and she had the strength to handle the gentle push. She was determined to talk to him. Because he badly needed someone to talk to, he gave up without much fight.
Sitting in front of Tony, Stella observed him. He was fiddling with his fingers for some time.
"I love her," he started.
Stella nodded. She had no doubt about it.
"You know what, Stella... I am grateful for you. Thank you for caring for me. But I... It’s... I am fine. I am fine," Tony tried to stand up.
"I may not be old enough to be your mother, Tony, but I can listen to you. Why do you not want to go home? Is she causing you trouble?" Stella asked point blank. She understood that Tony was hesitant to talk about his issue with her. If Marcella was in the wrong, she would fight for Tony. She loved Tony as her son.
"No! Nothing like that. She’s... She’s not... I love her..." Tony said.
Stella brought some hot tea for him. She waited for him to open up.
Taking a sip from the cup, Tony’s face brightened up a bit. "It’s been more than a year since we got married and we... She feels like having a baby is very important right now."
Stella let out a short sigh of relief. She knew Marcella was not caught up in some scandal that hurt Tony.
"Is she putting up restrictions?" Stella asked.
She knew it was a sensitive topic to talk about but she wanted to help this young couple. After all, she was an elder who cared. How could she be a proper elder if she never meddled?
Tony didn’t have to say anything for Stella to confirm her doubt.
"She grew up pampered. It’s not surprising that she’s controlling. It’s hard for those pampered brats to realize that not everything can be controlled~"
"She’s not controlling," Tony interjected Stella. Even though Stella took his side, he couldn’t let others badmouthing his wife.
But he thought about it. Marcella is a little controlling. She wants things to be kept the way she likes it and she wouldn’t let him keep his clothes piled on the floor or leave his table messy.
Stella chuckled. Of course, he wouldn’t like it if she talked badly about his wife. He was just like his wife in this issue. She too wouldn’t let anyone talk badly about Tony.
Stella still wouldn’t take back what she said about Marcella. She was right. Marcella grew up different and although she was humble, she had certain qualities of a pampered youngest child. She was still lovely with all her faults.
"She’s gotten more annoying lately. She wouldn’t let me near her and only on the days she specifies, she..." Tony spoke in a flow but he paused realizing that he was discussing something private with another person.
"Has it become a chore? Making a baby? You are no longer making love?" Stella asked.
That could be the worst thing that can happen to a couple.
Tony nodded hesitantly. He didn’t want to talk about it but he didn’t want to live like this for longer. "She went to a doctor without informing me. She does not listen to me; she doesn’t talk to me. She’s taking some pills for fertility and she listens to every old wife’s tale there is and... It’s torture!"
In the end, Tony let out his suffering with words having an ear to listen.
Stella patted his shoulder. "I have a way to solve this," she said.
Tony’s eyes got bright.
