Flash Marriage: Shrewd Wife, Devious Husband -
Chapter 191: Open Talk
Chapter 191: Open Talk
It took a couple of days for Tony to feel better. Marcella followed up with the doctor and he told her that he was not that hurt although he had suffered a lot of beatings. His jaws were the ones that got a lot of hurt. Those who wanted him hurt hated him, the doctor said.
Marcella knew. She didn’t know who Doctor Prosperi was. Randy brought him. The doctor didn’t care about how Tony got the injuries. He treated him and had a nice smile when he talked to him. He probably was instructed to.
The doctor asked her to be brave for her husband and happy that he was safe. Marcella was glad to learn that Tony’s face wouldn’t change after he healed.
That evening, she helped him eat. He was not allowed to chew anything hard and he was bothered by it. Only when she spoon-fed him, did he eat something. So, like a good wife, she served her husband hand and foot. To be honest, he did the same for her. She loved doing everything for him.
"Bring me the documents Stella brought home," Tony said rubbing his belly.
Marcella glared at him. "Really?"
Tony let out a deep breath. "What else should I do?" he asked.
Having worked non-stop, he couldn’t rest for a single day. Marcella didn’t think anyone could get this addicted to working. But then, she married a workaholic.
She leaned on his chest. "Talk to me..." she said.
He still didn’t tell her why he went to Paul’s house. She tried to open up that topic once or twice, but he avoided her. She decided to be subtle about it this time.
"Uncle Karl told me to behave properly. Apparently, there are rumors floating around that John Emerson and I have something scandalous going on."
She thought if she talked about hard to talk about subjects, he would open up too.
"Hmm..." he gently ran his fingers through her hair. "People make up stories just because they need something to talk about. Don’t worry about it...And don’t stop going to the range with him. It’s good to be updated with new weapons..."
Marcella’s lips curved with happiness. She expected that he will reply along these lines and she was exhilarated that he didn’t break her trust.
"Emerson wanted to know if Paul suffered enough..." she said. That was her subtly taking Tony to that day. He didn’t ask her how she killed Paul or why she killed Paul. He completely avoided talking about that day, although he agreed that they had a lot to talk about.
She didn’t want to leave it at that. She wanted to know what happened that day.
"I think he’s still in love with Mellissa. The anger in his face..." she sighed. "Poor guy..."
Tony’s hold on her tightened. He didn’t say a word, but Marcella could feel his relief for her presence. He talked about first love and she had first-hand knowledge of how it feels to almost lose a loved one. She hugged him back.
"I am so glad you are safe, Tony...And..." she sat up and looked at his face. "I realized something..." she wetted her lips.
She said pretty hurtful words to him in the past and she avoided talking about Tony’s decisions the day her sister died. She wanted to tell him how the recent events changed her perspective.
Tony looked at her silently.
"I understand you, Tony..." she held his hand. "It’s not about right or wrong or whether you care about someone or not. It’s about..." she took in a deep breath trying to compose her breathing. Tony looked confused as if she was talking in another language. "I am talking about that day, Tony... About you leaving me in the police station when Mellissa..." She clarified.
Tony leaned forward. His eyebrows raised and his lips parted with anticipation. He knew she was very bothered by it and held resentment over him about that issue. He didn’t regret his decision but he was saddened that the situation got out of hand that day leading to that misgiving between them.
"I thought I understood what you might have felt like because I saw my mother in a pool of blood..." Her eyes clouded and Tony held her hand tightly. "It was not the same, Tony. When I heard the sound of kicking and...when I saw you curled up on the floor with your limbs tied... It was worse, Tony. It probably is wrong to feel that way. My mother was killed cruelly... but that was what I felt..."
Tony’s eyes watered. "I always mean it when I say you’re all I have, Birdie..." he said.
Marcella hugged him. She understood him. Because, she felt the same that day. She was not thinking about anything else or anyone else. For her, he was the only one valuable thing she needed to protect.
It might not be the fact. Both of them have other people who care about them and whom they care about. Love is a weird feeling. At that moment, Tony became her state of being and her purpose of existence.
He couldn’t explain it to her with his words, but she understood him better now. That day, Tony would have felt the same too. He wanted to protect her at all costs.
Does that negate everything? She couldn’t say.
But love forgives, right? And love forgets.
"I love you, Tony. I love you more than I thought I did," she said.
Tony chuckled. "You loved me the same, silly..."
Marcella leaned on his chest. She was relieved after talking to him about it. She felt lighter and happier. She could hear his pounding heart. He might be relived to know that she didn’t hold any resentment toward him.
"My dad would have felt the same seeing my mother like that too, right?" she asked rubbing his belly.
Tony kissed her head.
"I shouldn’t have left him after my mother’s death. Mellissa had to go to her marital home and dad... I left dad all alone..." she sighed. Her eyes watered without her even realizing it.
"Don didn’t want you back then. He disowned you around that time," Tony reminded her.
