Chapter 192: Together in Everything

"To protect me," Marcella finished Tony’s statement.

She was not happy that he didn’t include the whole truth. It used to be a wound in her heart. She thought she was abandoned by her father. Tony told her the truth.

"To protect you," Tony kissed her head. "As much as he wanted to keep you closer to him, he didn’t. He wanted you to be safe far away from him."

Marcella sighed.

There was silence in the room for some time. Marcella didn’t speak, but her brain was deliberating nonstop. She wondered if she should ask him again.

"You had an amazing father, Marcella," Tony said breaking the silence.

"True," Marcella agreed. She placed her hand over his chest and gently patted him. She had a feeling he was opening up.

"You’re not going to ask why I went to the beach house?" Tony asked.

"I asked you. You weren’t ready to talk," she said.

"When?" he asked.

He didn’t remember her asking him the reason. She talked about that day and told him somethings that happened in the house. She never asked him why he went there.

Wait...Her talking about the house was her asking him?

Why can’t she be direct?

Marcella blinked. She talked about the house and insinuated that she was not very pleased he went there. She blamed him and he kept silent. If that was not asking, what is?

But then she realized her "direct approach" might not have been direct enough for Tony. Some times he turns stupid. He must have a lot of thoughts going on in his mind.

"Why did you go there, Tony?" she asked sitting up. This should be direct enough.

Tony held her hand and placed it on his lap.

"Paul asked me there. Said he needed to talk about something important—a truce..."

He avoided her eyes and looked to the side.

"Why did you go there, Tony?" she asked placing her other hand over his hand. She knew that he was not telling the whole truth. He was ashamed of something.

"I was jealous," he gulped. "It’s... I don’t know why... I didn’t like that he invited Andrew Mellon..." he sighed.

Marcella sighed. "Did you want to have a good relationship with your father, Tony?" she asked.

She could get mad at him for wanting to be on good terms with the man who killed his brother. But she didn’t want to. Human emotions are much more complicated. She despised what her father did and yet she loved him more than anything.

Blood relations are hard to break and heart is fragile no matter how hard one tries to suppress their feelings. Unless they are a psychopath, humans tend to gravitate toward family even if they hurt them. Maybe it’s a curse.

Tony still didn’t look at her face. He looked guilty and afraid to look at her face. Marcella wanted to assure him that she was not mad at him but she didn’t want to disturb him when he talked.

"Don’t get me wrong. I hated him. I wanted him dead. But...I don’t know why, Birdie. You stopped me and I..." He looked at her and his eyes were red.

"I wanted to know why I was not good enough for him. Andy was enough. That guy was enough. Why me? What have I ever done to invoke such hate on me? Why couldn’t he look at me without hatred?"

Marcella pressed her lips. His voice was shaking as he showed his vulnerability to her. She knew this question has been upsetting him all his life. He was fine with it when he was just an orphan but knowing that his father refused to acknowledge him hurt him deeply.

She had told him that she was enough for him but she didn’t want to blame him for wanting a chance to find the answer to that question that had been bothering him all his life.

"You think I am weak, don’t you? You think I am pathetic and a loser," he bowed his head.

Marcella kneeled on the bed and hugged him by wrapping her arms around his shoulders. Resting his face on her bosom, she patted his head and caressed his hair. She patiently waited for him to calm down. He was not crying but he was holding her breath.

She regretted the way men were programmed. They can’t cry as easily as a woman could. If it was her, she would have bawled her eyes out and have her sorrow halved. He could cry but he won’t.

"Do not call yourself a loser, Tony. I killed that guy for calling you a loser. Don’t make me kill you too," she said after he calmed down a little.

Tony looked up at her face and chuckled. "You won’t kill me, Birdie."

"You’re right. I won’t," Marcella laughed with him.

She gently wiped the wetness at the corner of his eyes and kissed his mouth softly.

"Did you get your answer?" she asked.

She hoped he did. It would give him peace and help him move on.

Tony shook his head. "No."

Marcella’s smile froze on her face but Tony’s face was still blooming. Seeing him relaxed, Marcella sat beside him.

"But I realized why I was right to hate him. He showed me that my worth never depended on his opinion of me," Tony said.

"You always knew that!" Marcella said. He was the one with the most confidence.

"I did. I do, now. I was confused for some time, that’s all," Tony said.

"What an idiot," Marcella kissed the tip of his nose. "My husband is the most precious. He is infallible, unbeatable and a genius. How could he ever slip up like this?"

Tony laughed looking at her. "I should have talked to you about my feelings earlier. You would have eased my heart."

Marcella smiled. She would have. "You remember that only now."

"Sorry," he sighed. "I can’t believe I..." He covered his face with his hands and rubbed it. When he removed his hands, his eyes were bright. "But I learned a lot, Birdie. I was deliberating on whether I should talk to you about it or not but now..."

"You are not going to hide anything from me, are you?" Marcella asked tilting her head.

"No, dear. I am not going to. You made me too happy today and trust me when I say this... We are going to do everything together from now on."

Marcella smiled. Not over a year ago, she was the one who needed constant acknowledgement and confidence boosts. Tony was by her side and helped her patiently. She wanted to help him through this slip-up.

Like he said, they need to pull the cart together and for that both should give their 100%.

"Everything is much more sinister than we thought, Birdie," Tony held her hand.

The trace of smile lost on his face and his eyes squinted recollecting the events of that day.
