Chapter 161: The Separation
Chapter 161: The Separation
That night, Marcella and Tony had a great time. They also prepared for Joey’s birthday.
Marcella looked at Tony sleeping deeply. She couldn’t fall asleep the entire night. She didn’t know why she was bothered by it that much. Even Tony’s words didn’t comfort her. She just pretended to be fine.
They celebrated Joey’s birthday with their close friends. There weren’t even a hundred attendees. They mostly planned that way because they were sure that Paul Romano would try to sabotage the birthday.
Until that day, they weren’t informed of any movement from Paul Romano. But Henry already informed them that Maggie and Paul were planning on crashing the birthday party. Marcella let Tony handle everything. She didn’t want to know what was happening as she was busy making the arrangements for the party. She wanted to treat their close friends properly and thank them for the support they were giving them.
Just as they were about the cut the birthday cake, Paul Romano and Maggie Romano came to the house. Andrew Mellon was with them too. Tony placed his hand on her back assuring her. Marcella didn’t mind Paul’s presence.
The celebrations were over and Paul came to the baby. Marcella’s first instinct was to hide the baby but Tony got Joey from her and passed him to Paul. Marcella was confused. She wondered if Tony had forgiven his father and accepted him. Tony was smiling so widely when he talked to Paul although Marcella could see that something was missing.
Paul and Maggie played with the baby for some time. They talked to her as if the past interactions between them never happened and they were just a happy little family. Maggie couldn’t stop her praises for Mellissa and couldn’t stop touching Marcella so gently.
Marcella could only cringe as she was bewildered by this change.
Marcella asked Randy to keep Paul’s gift somewhere else as she didn’t think Paul came in peace. But he did nothing and left as he arrived—silently.
"What was that about?" Marcella asked.
"I told you yesterday that Paul withdrew the court case about having custody of Joey, right?" Tony whispered.
"You did?" Marcella raised her brows. She didn’t remember that. If he said that she would have remembered that.
Tony was surprised that she didn’t know. "We were talking before bed and..."
"Tell me more," Marcella waved her hand. She vaguely remembered Tony saying something. But she was in her thoughts and didn’t listen to him. She felt guilty about it. It can’t be right to act this way. She needed to do better.
"I made a deal with him. Visitation rights in exchange for him withdrawing the case," Tony said.
Marcella was lost for words. She wouldn’t have expected her husband to do such a dumb thing. She also didn’t find the smiles on Paul’s and Maggie’s face right. They were obviously planning something.
"You didn’t tell me this yesterday," she furrowed her brows. She was not sure but she said it anyway. She could not fathom what made Tony decide this on his own. It’s about little Joey. She had a say too.
Tony held her hand. She slipped out of his grip and walked to Rosy who was holding Joey. She got Joey and kissed his cheek. She didn’t want any harm to come on this little boy. This boy is her everything. She would go to any distance to protect this little angel.
Tony tried to stand close to her but she moved around right till the end of the party. That night, she slept in the nursery. Tony came to get her but she didn’t go with him. She was mad at him and didn’t want to share a bed with him.
She had a terrible feeling in her heart. Paul’s smile was not the only smile that was a façade. Tony’s was too. Tony was not someone with a soft heart. He wouldn’t have forgiven Paul that easily. If she knew that Paul might be planning on something, Tony would too. Still, he made that deal.
That should mean only one thing. Tony was planning on killing Paul. She didn’t mind the death of Paul. Paul was the one who killed Mellissa and Andrew. He probably had a hand in her father’s death too.
She was scared of Tony. She was scared for Tony.
Even if Paul deserved death, he was Tony’s biological father. Will Tony kill his father? Even if he didn’t do it himself, even if he gave the orders, still, his father’s blood will be on him.
Will my husband go that far? Will he kill his father? If he could kill his father, how far will he go? He shut his eyes and ears and let my sister die. How far will he go?
The little resentment she tried to hide in the deepest part of her heart reared it’s ugly head upsetting her. She couldn’t even face him properly. She shouldn’t be treating him as a murderer when he didn’t do anything yet. But she couldn’t.
She was scared.
A week passed. Tony came back home early the entire week wanting to have a conversation with her. But she was not talking to him. She was speaking with him but she didn’t talk about anything important.
From the staff, he learned that she didn’t leave the house either and was cooped up inside the house. She didn’t even go to the convenience store, she didn’t take Joey for walks to the park, she didn’t get dressed for dinner, she had "headaches" at night...
He knew she was not well. His chest hurt as if someone sucked out all the air inside. Whenever he tried to talk to her, she would smile weirdly and walk out on him. He didn’t know what he could do.
Without seeing her radiant smile and being touched by her warm embrace, he was like a withered flower.
That day, he couldn’t find her inside the house. He found her in the garden under the maple tree. They’ve had a lot of happy moments under this maple tree in the past year but standing there that day, he remembered the day the will was read.
She had quite the same expression she has now.
At least, that day, she talked to him. Her words hurt, but she talked to him. Today, she was not even willing to talk.
What can I do?
