Chapter 160: Her Worry

Tony watched as Marcella gazed out of the window. Although she was dressed for the wedding, she may have been slightly overdressed for a baby shower, but he could tell that she had a good time. Gloria Butler’s smile said it all.

However, since getting into the car, Marcella had been quiet. She didn’t avoid his questions and answered him, but she was lost in her own thoughts. Tony tried to understand what was bothering her.

"Are you okay, Birdie?" Tony asked, placing his hand over hers.

"Huh?" Marcella looked at him, not even hearing what he said.

"Is something bothering you?" he asked.

"No, nothing. I’m fine," she replied, not even bothering to look at him.

Tony pressed his lips together firmly. He knew that when a woman said nothing was wrong, it usually meant that everything was wrong. His male instinct was to trust her words and ignore the problem, but he pulled over to the side of the road.

He loved his wife, and if he knew for sure that she was hurting, he needed to do whatever he could to help her.

"Birdie...Please talk to me about it," he said, holding her hand.

Marcella glared at him. She was not fine, but she was not ready to talk to him. She wanted to lash out at him for not leaving her in peace, but seeing the gentleness on his face, she held herself back.

She loved him. She couldn’t be unreasonable with him and shout at him for wanting to help her.

"I don’t want to talk about it," she said.

"Is it about me?" Tony asked.

"No. It’s...It’s not about you," Marcella turned her face to the side.

Tony let out a deep breath. "Did Mrs. Butler say something that upset you?"

"No! I had a great time with Glo!" Marcella replied immediately.

"What are you worried about?" Tony asked. "Birdie, I can’t see you like this. I have planned an entire night with you. If you’re like this, I...wait!" he opened his door as she opened the door and stepped out.

"Birdie, stop!" he ran behind her. "What’s wrong?"

"I don’t want to ruin the night you’ve planned. I’ll disappear," she pouted and increased her gait. "What does anything accomplish? Everything is naught..." she mumbled.

It was not hard for Tony to catch her. "Come on, Birdie! You know I was not talking about my plans on the bed. I truly have other plans. I booked a show at the Opera. I can show you the tickets now. I wanted it to be a surprise..."

Marcella turned at him. Her eyes clouded.

"Oh, dear!" Tony hugged her. "Don’t cry now..." he kissed her head.

She must be close to "that" day. She gets emotional around that time of the month. It must be so hard to be the fairer sex, Tony thought.

Marcella buried her face in his chest. When he told her not to cry, her tears dried up automatically. She hugged him tightly and took a good whiff of his strength.

"I am fine," she stood on her tiptoes and kissed his chin. "Let’s go. People are looking at us..."

Tony looked around. There was a mart nearby and people who g were at the parking lot were staring at them. He held her hand and opened the car door for her.

Marcella smiled at him. Tony kissed her forehead and closed the door. Tony didn’t ask her again. When she smiled at him, he could see that she was fine. Whatever thought bothered her—she had handled it.

He still wanted to know what that was though.

Marcella took a sneaky glance at him. He looked handsome as he concentrated on the road. She wondered if she should talk about it or if he had moved on. It was stupid of her to not be open about it with him. She wanted to know what he is thought was in that issue.

Tony pulled over this time at a rest stop. "Are we ready to talk?" he asked.

Marcella bowed her head and fiddled with her finger. She couldn’t believe that he read her mind, again. She married a dangerous one.

"Joey’s birthday is coming up in a week," she said.

She didn’t know how to bring up what she wanted to ask him. She decided to get to it in a roundabout manner.

"Yes, we talked about having a small gathering of our close friends for the celebrations," Tony said. He couldn’t guess what she was talking about.

Marcella gulped and looked at him. " A month from his birthday is our first wedding anniversary..." she bowed her head again.

Tony placed her hand over hers. "I remember if that’s what you’re worried about. I will prepare a gift for you. If you want to ask me something, you~"

"No," Marcella shook her head. "It’s not about the gift. Well, I do want a gift but...That was not what I..." she let out a deep breath.

Tony looked into her eyes. He didn’t know why she looked ashamed of something.

"Birdie... What is it?" he asked.

Marcella couldn’t even look at him anymore. She leaned on his shoulder shielding herself from his view.

"It’s been a year since we got married. I still..." She tried not to get emotional but she couldn’t help it. Tears rolled from the corners of her eyes and wetted his suit.

"Tony," she clung onto the sleeve of his jacket and looked at him. "What if I am infertile? My mother and my sister too had a hard time getting~"

"Enough!!" Tony raised his voice. "Stop crying! Right this instance!"

Marcella reeled back out of fear. Tony had never used this tone on her. She felt like she was a child getting admonished by her parent for a wrong she committed.

Her tears didn’t stop though.

"Oh, Birdie," he wrapped his arm around her neck and pulled her into an embrace. "I’m sorry for raising my voice. I cannot bear to see you crying... Sorry..."

"But..." Marcella sobbed. "My concerns are valid. My mother had two miscarriages before having Mellissa and me. Mellissa was childless for a decade. It’s been a year and we are doing it all the time, but... Something must be wrong with me..."

"Now you’re making me angry, Marcella," Tony’s embrace tightened.

Marcella tried to get out of his hold but he didn’t let go for a minute. He let out a deep breath and cupped her cheeks.

"Listen to me, Birdie, and listen to me well. We are not going to discuss this again. We have Joey and it will happen when it happens. I do not want you to cry about this anymore. Do you hear me?" He spoke softly.

Marcella nodded. He wiped her tears and hugged her closely.

"I love you, Birdie. Don’t worry about this or that..."
