Chapter 159: Nail in the Coffin
Chapter 159: Nail in the Coffin
"Is it fine though? You should ask your...husband. He’s your husband now, isn’t he? He didn’t invite my husband. He only invited me, using my maiden name. Don’t know what that was about..."
With her eyebrows raised she stared at Aiden. Aiden gulped and took a step back. He was already in shock seeing the name on the gift and now she openly confronted him with something he did with malice in his heart. His first instinct was to back off. He had never seen her like this before. She had become an entirely different person. It was unbelievable.
That was what Marcella wanted. The shock on Aiden’s face was worth his weight in gold. She never had the chance to confront Aiden to his face before. Having done that, the healing wounds in Marcella’s heart were soothed.
"Never mind," Marcella with a grin waved her hand off and turned her attention toward Cindy. "It’s a weekday. We have work to do," she shrugged.
Cindy was tied for words. Marcella didn’t expect any reply from her. She saw the priest standing behind the couple with an awkward smile. Marcella kneeled in front of him. "Tony," she called him. Tony was already surrounded by some of Aiden’s guests and he was talking politely with them. Hearing her, he joined her.
"Bless us, Father," Marcella said with her palms together over her chest.
As the married couple stood on either side of them as if they were their guards, Marcella and Tony got the blessing from the Father. Marcella got a blessing for little Joey too. After that, Marcella and Tony turned to leave.
Aiden and Cindy were staring at them blankly. Marcella was met with the wife of one of the businessmen in attendance. Marcella knew Mrs. Rodriques loved to gossip. Just with her eyes alone, Marcella could see that she wanted something to talk about. She must have known that she was Aiden’s ex. So when Mrs. Roderiques asked her to confirm whether Aiden didn’t invite her husband, Marcella told her the truth. She might have also slipped the fact that Cindy wanted to marry Tony.
It didn’t happen immediately as it took a couple of months for that gossip to spread around the elite circles. Aiden—a man with good prospects had turned into a pathetic man who lost his ex to Tony Crawford; not just any woman but THE daughter of Don DeAngelo. People also pitied Tony for marrying a woman whose first choice was Tony.
In politics and in the elite circles, respect was everything. Aiden’s choice to marry Cindy was considered a downgrade and an unwise choice by many business-minded people. Aiden’s fall from grace was swifter than the pace he rose up.
One scandal nailed the coffin of Aiden’s political aspirations. That is another story to tell.
Marcella and Tony left the Church. Marcella didn’t think Tony would ask about asking for the blessings of the Priest first.
"I didn’t want to appear too prideful in front of God," Marcella whispered.
Tony chuckled. He didn’t think she would care about this stuff. He came from a religious family but her family never were that religious although they were members of the Church. He didn’t even think she who never attended a single mass would have fear for God. She was conscious that she was behaving inappropriately in a Church as she disrupted a wedding service.
He didn’t mind it. He could see the clarity in her eyes. He knew she had nailed the first nail on Aiden’s coffin. He will never recover. He hoped God found his wife cute like he did too.
Marcella rushed inside the house the moment Tony stopped in front of her house. Tony blinked.
What was he supposed to do?
Thankfully Mr. Butler came to his aide. He took a large gulp of the beer from the bottle he was holding. "It’s a women’s thing. Shall we go fishing until it’s over? I know a perfect spot," he asked Tony.
"Fishing?" Tony raised his brows. He was not that interested in fishing.
"Ah..." Mr. Butler looked at the empty beer bottle in his hand. "I’m not that drunk. How about the gun range? I have a couple of new arrivals. Want to see if they would suit your lady?" he asked.
Tony gave the thumbs-up signal. He greatly appreciated it. He was planning on getting a new gun for Marcella. This would be perfect.
Marcella went and hugged Gloria. "I could have arranged the shower in a spa or a nice hotel," she said.
Gloria rubbed her belly with a beautiful smile. Marcella got reminded of Mellissa. She had the exact same smile when she was pregnant too.
"The gifts!" Marcella shouted only then remembering that she had left the gifts in the car. "I’ll see if he’s still there," she said and got out.
Gloria smiled and went to sit on the couch. Her cousins and other friends were there but seeing Marcella gave her more happiness. When she was late, she thought she might cancel on it but she was so glad she came.
Marcella came back in with a deep sigh. "Both of them are leaving somewhere..."
Marcella was stressed and Gloria held her hand and brought her inside. "Let’s get it later," she said. "I don’t care about the gifts. Pour yourself a glass of wine."
Marcella nodded. Gloria was right. She could get the gifts later. She poured the wine and sat with the others. She was not acquainted with the majority of them and slowly she got to know them. There were games and they had fun. Marcella was a lot embarrassed when others opened the presents but Gloria assured her.
Others left after lunch, but Marcella stayed. She wanted to talk to Gloria for some time. Gloria let her touch her belly and Marcella was amazed to feel the kicks of the baby.
Marcella told her everything that happened in the morning at Aiden’s wedding. Holding her belly, Gloria laughed so much that Marcella feared she might faint.
