Chapter 788: Chapter 772: News of Others

The ingredients for dinner were as pure as could be, nothing added except for a tiny bit of salt. Yue Feng had eaten only once since the morning when he was dropped off here. He had spent the entire day either moving around or working; naturally, his stomach was growling with hunger.

The natural, unprocessed food showcased the most authentic flavors. Yue Feng took a deep breath as he smelled the roasted fish and the fragrant fish head soup and couldn’t help but drool.

“Brothers, the fish soup and the grilled fish are almost ready; the beggar’s chicken still needs a bit more time to roast. Let’s try these first!”

After giving a heads-up, Yue Feng started eating voraciously, unable to contain himself.

The wild-caught fish was top-quality, chock-full of proteins and fats. He let the fish soup cool down just a smidge after removing it from the flame, and took a mouthful straight from the field pot—it tasted absolutely perfect!

“Yue Bro is living the good life, isn’t he? With fire, a camp, tools, and such an abundant food supply, it’s almost like he’s indulging in luxury!”

“I just checked another stream where a guy almost got chased by a bear. That American dude with the number one was using a bow and arrow to hunt a little squirrel, and then he set up a pitiful makeshift tent with a plastic sheet, all the while roasting the squirrel. He didn’t even have two ounces of meat altogether! Look at Yue Bro, though; he’s wolfing down the fish with such gusto—it’s a delight to watch!”

“That’s still someone lucky. Number six, that foreign girl who’s supposedly a botanist, started foraging for food as soon as she landed, but all she found were lichens and small berries the size of beans. Despite the long struggle, she harvested only a tiny bit. I doubt she’ll last a week!”

“The performance of number three, that white guy, isn’t great either! His landing estimate was similar to Yue Feng’s, and he must have reached the lake by noon. He had only fish hooks and lines, no rod; he tried for a long time without catching anything. He spent the whole afternoon building a shelter on an empty stomach. After watching these Americans’ streams, I feel like I could handle this challenge, too!”

“Eat, drink, and be merry—when we eat, we use bowls! Yue Bro is now the chief of the Eating Brigade, the real boss!”

Through the livestream, Yue Feng got a sense of the other contestants’ basic situation. While eating, he watched for a while and felt as though he had a significant edge.

Yue Feng couldn’t help but ask, “Eh, isn’t there anyone a bit stronger? If you guys notice anyone, you can share with me—that kind of intel is pretty important to me!”

“Yes! Breaking news! Contestant number eight, a black guy who’s said to be a veteran from the SEALs, just used a bow and arrow to take down a porcupine five minutes ago! Yue Bro, looks like you’ve got a contender! A porcupine weighs at least twenty to thirty pounds; he probably won’t have to worry about food for the next few days!”

“Holy shit, hunted a porcupine on the first day, that’s some fight! Number eight’s stream, right? I’ll go have a look! Yue Bro, don’t fret—we’ll keep you posted on any news!”

As soon as word got out that someone had taken down a porcupine, Yue Feng’s stream instantly lost thousands of viewers, all rushing off to watch the porcupine being handled.

After hearing the news, Yue Feng became quite eager himself; he had only seen porcupines on TV and had yet to encounter one in real life.

They chatted idly, eating and drinking, and before they knew it, the sky had gradually darkened.

More than an hour had passed since he started cooking, and Yue Feng flipped the beggar’s chicken over, adjusting its position.

Another half hour or so of roasting, and it was completely dark.

Yue Feng used a long stick to rake the beggar’s rabbit out from the center of the fire, let it cool down for a bit, then tapped it with the stick. The hard crust of soil broke, revealing the slightly discolored lichen and the roasted wild rabbit inside.

Sealed under the earth, the fragrance of the rabbit had hardly dissipated and had completely merged with the lichen. Besides the aroma of the roasted meat, there was also the faint scent of lichen diffusing into the air.

And these lichens, moistened by the fat, also looked quite appealing.

Having not finished the fish and already feeling quite full, Yue Feng didn’t hurry to dig into the rabbit but instead pinched a bit of lichen to taste.

An unseasoned grilled vegetable flavor burst forth on the tongue, mixed with a hint of wild rabbit aroma—the taste wasn’t bad at all.

For Yue Feng, who had eaten fish in his last two meals, the taste of the lichen was quite nice, even more tempting than the meat itself.

“Haha, brothers, we’ve struck gold! After roasting, these lichens soaked in fat taste really good!” Yue Feng secretly popped a piece into his mouth, chewing with his eyes narrowed in enjoyment.

“That’s it? You’ve got rabbit and you’re entertaining us by eating the lichen on the outside? Brother Feng, you’re tripping!”

“That number six botanist lady in the live stream was also talking about these lichens. She didn’t roast them, just washed them and ate them raw! They seemed to taste pretty good too!”

Yue Feng swallowed a mouthful of lichen and said, “This stuff’s loaded with plant fiber, helps with bowel movements! Eating only meat isn’t great at all. Vitamins, dietary fiber, and all that, they’re also absolutely necessary! A balanced diet is important! Alright, before it gets completely dark, let me give you a performance of gnawing on a rabbit leg!”

With a nod to the audience, Yue Feng broke off an entire hind leg of the rabbit and bit into it without hesitation!

Perhaps due to storing up energy for the winter, the wild rabbit was very fatty, and with one bite juice nearly burst out, with the rich meat aroma exploding on the tip of the tongue—a thoroughly enjoyable experience!

Given Yue Feng’s usual appetite, half a roasted fish would have filled him to eighty percent full, and with some fish soup, he could have made it through the night without needing the rabbit.

However, from the system skill, he had learned many pieces of common knowledge about wilderness survival, such as to keep the body in peak condition when food is plentiful, and eat as much as one normally would without heavy exercise and without overeating as the guideline.

This concept, unlike the “eat until seven or eight full” in civilized society, was radically different, and Yue Feng didn’t bother to explain much, just focused on his gnawing.

After finishing off a hind leg, Yue Feng felt completely full. He then wiped his mouth with his hand and started to clean up.

“The sky’s completely darkened, and we’ve resolved our dinner! We’ll save the rest of the beggar’s rabbit for tomorrow! As for the fish head soup, cover it well and put it away; boil it in the morning so we can drink warm soup first thing to maintain our body condition!

As for the fish bones and other remains, we can’t just throw them away willy-nilly—the best thing to do is to bury them in a pit!”

While speaking, Yue Feng picked up his gear, and about a few dozen meters away from the camp, he dug a shallow pit and buried the fish bones and rabbit bones.
