Chapter 787: Chapter 771: The Lichen Beggar Rabbit

The lasso had caught around its neck and one of its front legs, leaving half of its body suspended by branches and bushes, unable to go up or down, very uncomfortable!

“If a wild rabbit gets caught and realizes it has no chance of escaping, it will make this kind of noise, similar to despair! This is the first trap we’ve set up, a good start! The footage below is a bit graphic, so I’ve applied a cartoon effect to it!”

After giving a heads up, Yue Feng walked over to the trap, quickly grabbed the rabbit’s hind legs with a swift motion, grabbed its neck with his left hand, and with a quick twist, there was a snap, and the rabbit fell silent in an instant.

Yue Feng waved the rabbit, with its neck broken, in front of the camera.

“I was originally planning to eat just fish, but it looks like we have a bonus meal for tonight! I’ll take it back, process it, cover it in mud to make a beggar’s rabbit—delicious!”

“Holy moly, so that’s what a rabbit sounds like when it cries out!”

“This wild rabbit is so fat, no less than three or four pounds!”

“Rabbits are so cute, why eat them? The mere three words ‘beggar’s rabbit’ have sorrowful tears involuntarily streaming down from the corners of my mouth!”

“The guy above is simply a genius! That awkward turn of phrase almost caused my soul to drift away, a misfire hitting a friendly unit!”

Yue Feng reset the trap to its original state, casually picked up the rabbit, and continued looking for a suitable sapling to make a shovel.

Oddly enough, there were plenty of pine trees thick as bowl rims, but few suitable for making a shovel. After a long search, he found one and without a second thought, swung the axe in greeting, quickly chopping it down, roughly tidied it up, and carried it back to camp.

Back at camp, he peeled the sapling, made basic refinements until it was smooth to the touch, and the handle for the shovel was ready. He inserted it into the shovel head, filled in the gaps with wooden slivers, and just like that, a handy shovel was finished.

Yue Feng swung the shovel in his hands a couple of times, it felt right in terms of weight and length, not too bad.

“Tools are one of the most important resources in the wild! Originally, I planned to just pile up some stones to make a rudimentary cellar, but with a shovel, we can be much more precise! Now that it has a handle, let’s see how it works!”

As he spoke, Yue Feng took the shovel and went to the chosen location for the shelter’s foundation.

He picked an open spot and stepped down on the shovel.

With only minimal resistance, the shovel sank into the soil, its arc-shaped blade proved ideal for digging, offering little resistance.

As he scooped up the first shovelful of dirt, Yue Feng briefly assessed it, pinched a bit of the soil to check its quality, and said, “The quality of the soil here is quite good, it’s rich black soil with few impurities, meaning we can proceed smoothly with the cellar!

I’ll dig out some of the soil from underneath to increase the depth of the cellar, and the soil we dig up will be piled up around the outer edges, which will make the foundation much firmer and less prone to letting drafts in!

Alright, after we wake up tomorrow, we’ll officially start! For now, let’s prep some of this soil for tonight’s beggar’s rabbit!”

Yue Feng, like an experienced gardener, sifted the freshly dug soil, removing small stones and other impurities. After a while, he was left with a finer selection of soil.

Taking a weapon for protection, he picked up the rabbit and headed back to the lakeside to clean its innards and such.

Processing a rabbit was not as simple as killing a fish. From among the many blades of the Swiss Army knife, Yue Feng selected a skinning knife with a short, rounded blade and meticulously prepared the prey.

He made an incision resembling a cross near the rabbit’s mouth, slowly peeled the skin, then made circular cuts at the ends of the four limbs. After these simple steps, he made another cut down the middle of the spine, separating the skin and muscle, continuing until the skin reached the tail, where he cut from the inside—a complete rabbit pelt was removed!

After preparing the rabbit’s skin, Yue Feng casually placed it in a clean spot on the shore and continued to clean the innards.

Compared to fish, rabbits have more internal organs. Mammals possess well-developed digestive systems, with various stomachs and intestines that quickly become exposed after cutting through the abdominal membrane and muscles.

In theory, many of these organs are edible and even tasty, but Yue Feng isn’t short on meat right now, and, without seasonings or additional cooking equipment at hand, he roughly removes the entire set of organs and, without hesitation, tosses them into the waters by the lake.

After a simple rinse, the rabbit, now reduced to just lean meat, is all cleaned up.

Since these shots can be a bit gory, Yue Feng had opted for a cartoon effect before starting, and his live streaming audience didn’t have any extreme reactions.

However, once Yue Feng finished processing the rabbit and displayed the pelt, the viewers were no longer calm.

“Holy crap, is that the whole skin peeled off? It looks so intact?”

“Perfect manual rabbit skinning +1, skill level +100”

“Haha, brother upstairs, you’ve been playing too many games!”

Yue Feng grinned and said, “The rabbit is cleaned up! Organs all discarded! Heading back to camp to prepare dinner! But before we go back, there’s one more thing we need! Come on, I’ll take you all to gather it.”

After taking a small detour with the rabbit, Yue Feng arrived at an area not far from the lake where a large expanse of yellow-green, low-lying plants grew, looking thin and inconspicuous against the ground.

“What’s that? What’s Feng up to now?”

“Is that some kind of vegetable? It looks so ugly! Can we eat it?”

“Seems like it, I remember someone made a video about it online, saying it’s edible for humans!”

Yue Feng nodded, “This is a type of lichen commonly found in high-latitude tundra regions! If we go by scientific classification, it should be a symbiosis of algae and fungi!

It’s edible, providing humans with certain hydrated compounds and crude plant fiber protein! Many herbivores like elk and wild rabbits feed on it!

We’ll gather some to take back, wrap it around the wild rabbit, and coat it with mud. This will make the meat cleaner and taste even better!”

After giving a simple explanation, Yue Feng squatted down and patiently started collecting it.

This area hadn’t been extensively harvested or damaged, so the lichen was thick and dense. With some simple preparation, one could peel off a layer, much like skinning a rabbit. Yue Feng measured against the rabbit, took an adequate bunch, and ceased gathering.

“That’s enough, back to camp!”

With that, Yue Feng headed back to the camp with the rabbit and the lichen.

The work that followed was quite entertaining to watch.

Yue Feng took some water out of the pot to make mud, then wrapped the lichen around the rabbit and coated it with the mud. After some effort, the rabbit turned into a round, plump ball of earth.

“Preparation work done, now it’s time to start a fire! We’ve only got salt, and it’s in limited supply, so we’ve got to use it sparingly. As usual, we’ll roast fish, plus make a fish head soup! As for the rabbit, we’ll roast it next to the fire. Once the other foods are ready, we’ll bury it in the ashes!”

Yue Feng, who had already demonstrated his talent for roasting fish, once again got busy, skewered the fish, chopped the heads, suspended the march pot on a triangular wooden frame, and then started the fire. Soon, the scent of roasting fish filled the camp again.
