Chapter 789: Chapter 773: Midnight Horror

After tidying up the remnants, the sky had completely darkened; Yue Feng glanced at the time—it was already after nine in the evening—the darkness falls late here.

“Alright, brothers! It’s getting late and I should sign off and rest! See you all tomorrow!” After a greeting, Yue Feng ended the livestream.

After hustling around the whole day, having had his fill, the fatigue gradually caught up with him.

Yue Feng kept the fire going strong, took out his sleeping bag under the shelter and spread it out, took off his coat to use as a pillow under his head, and nestled into the sleeping bag.

Yue Feng, never having camped in the open like this before, found it surprisingly acceptable once he actually lay down.

The sleeping bag, a custom model bought by Ken at a high price, was said to have an insulation grade that rivaled the gear used by the Antarctic Expedition Team.

In fact, the thing did seem a bit like black technology. Lying inside, he didn’t feel cold at all. The parts of his face exposed to the outside, thanks to the shelter reflecting the heat of the nearby fire, felt somewhat warm.

Amidst the crackling and popping sounds of the sparks, Yue Feng slowly drifted into dreams.

He didn’t know how long he had slept when he woke up to the cold. He glanced at the fire—it was just embers now. Needless to say, he had overslept and forgotten to add wood to the fire!

He crawled out of the sleeping bag to add wood, when suddenly a dark shadow darted away from not too far off.

In the pitch-black environment, one’s perception becomes extremely sharp. Hearing the noise, Yue Feng instinctively shone the emergency light towards it.

He only caught a glimpse of a silvery shadow, which quickly disappeared into the bushes.

This scared Yue Feng quite a bit, and he immediately put on his coat and grabbed the shovel, stepping carefully towards the source of the noise.

Upon arriving, Yue Feng shone his flashlight and discovered the problem.

Good lord, some creature had dug up the bones he had buried. Only a bit of fish tail was left and the rabbit bones were no more than a few scattered fragments—the rest had been carried or eaten away!

Whatever could crunch and eat the big bones of a rabbit must be a predatory creature, a thought that sent chills down Yue Feng’s spine! Damn, the creature had been less than twenty meters away from him just now. If it had been bolder and came near his sleeping bag…

Just the thought was enough to cause Yue Feng to break out in a cold sweat!

He checked the time; it was three in the morning. After waking up, the distant growls of unknown beasts kept his nerves wound tight through the night.

Yue Feng was unable to fall back asleep, so he stoked the fire back to life, crawled back into his sleeping bag, and kept his eyes open until the day slowly brightened.

In this season, the days are very long, which means the nights are much shorter.

Yue Feng checked the time again—it was five-thirty in the morning and already bright daylight!

He had slept rather well in the first half of the night. Yue Feng got up from the sleeping bag, packed it away simply into his backpack, and started to roast the leftover rabbit and fish soup from yesterday over the fire.

After filling his stomach, Yue Feng started the day’s livestream early.

“Haha, front row! Has Feng eaten yet? Good morning?”

“How’s it feeling camping in the wild?”

“What are we doing today? Still fishing and building a house?”

“Shouldn’t we check the traps?”

“Feng, you look a bit off, didn’t sleep well?”

Rubbing his slightly bloodshot eyes, Yue Feng said, “Hello everyone! I had a little situation last night and was woken up around three and didn’t dare to sleep after that! I’m slightly affected, but I’m managing!”

“What happened?”

“Yeah, what’s going on? What happened?”

Upon hearing Yue Feng speak like that, the group became anxious.

Yue Feng, with the drone, went to the place where they had buried the bones yesterday, saying, “In the middle of the night, I forgot to add wood to the fire, and the cold woke me up!”

When I was adding wood, I noticed what seemed like an animal was active where we buried the bones! I scanned with the emergency light and didn’t get a clear look at exactly what it was, but it seemed to be quite large!”

Also, the rabbit’s leg bones were bitten and eaten, it must have been a predator! Look, this is the trace left last night on the ground!”

The camera gave a close-up of the broken bones, and Yue Feng was standing by when suddenly a footprint appeared in the live stream camera.

This was a footprint as large as a child’s, its outline still fairly distinct in the upturned loose soil, now standing isolated there.

“Damn, is that a footprint?”

“Can’t be a wolf, right? Looks pretty big!”

“Cut the bull, wolf paws are similar to dogs’, they can’t retract their claws, so there would be clear claw marks at the front of each toe, but this one seems different, the paw is wider and the claw tips aren’t as distinct!”

Yue Feng took a look and said with a serious expression, “Not a wolf’s paw. Looking at this outline, I feel it could be an animal like a wolverine! Everyone look over here where the shallow pit was dug, there are similar traces, just not as clear!”

“Wolverine? Are those things dangerous?”

“Oh my god? We even have those in the Northeast, they’re protected animals!”

Yue Feng spread his hands: “Here, if it’s a wolverine, it’s not protected, among the common wild animals around here, it seems only foxes are protected!”

Knowing what it is is good! This thing usually moves solo, isn’t very big, and poses less danger to us! Later when we deal with the food waste, we need to clean up properly.

Next, let’s go check the traps and see if we’ve caught anything!”

After giving a signal, Yue Feng took the self-defense army knife and moved towards the area where he had set the traps.

After a half afternoon and a whole night, the traps yielded no small catch.

Two wild rabbits were hung and killed by the hang foot traps, and a squirrel, caught by its hind legs, was still alive.

What surprised everyone most was that one of the hang foot traps Yue Feng had set at the edge of the woods had caught something big enough to snap the doubled fourth-grade PE line, leaving behind a large amount of blood. The surroundings were a mess, with grass around the trap flattened in clumps.

Yue Feng bent down to closely inspect the surroundings, then squatted down and picked up a clump of silver-grey fur to show everyone.

“This hang foot trap seems to have caught some sort of mid-sized animal, but the rope has been bitten through! This is its fur! Silver-grey, with some downy hair as well! Not sure which animal it is yet! But it must have been wounded by the trap! I reckon it won’t dare to be active in the vicinity for a while!

Alright, let’s reset the traps and return to camp to work! Now that we have food, I need to quickly construct the shelter!”

After walking around the trap area, two rabbits and a squirrel meant that today’s food was secured!

With the temperature below zero at night, the two catches were frozen stiff, so they were taken back and placed in a cool, shaded area.

Shelter, shelter, shelter, say it three times for important things!

Thinking about last night’s risks, the word “shelter” filled Yue Feng’s mind, taking absolute priority!
