Chapter 314: A Matter Of Life Or Death

Shi Xiu Ying, the little helper girl from Wu Bai Hee’s condo, looked at the guard, her eyes wide with fear. He was one of the nice ones; he never looked at her weirdly or made comments about how she looked.

He always treated her with kindness. But he had no idea the horrible snake he was guarding. Because if he did, he would never put up with it.

"The Angel, do you know her?" asked Shi Xiu Ying, her head cocked to the side. Song Tian nodded his head in return. He knew the Angel very well. He had met her in person when he was at the first gates.

When his comrades had beaten him until he was almost dead, she came in and saved him. She was the whole reason why he was here.

"I do," he replied, keeping a straight face. He knew threats could come in all shapes and sizes and wouldn’t hand his Angel over if Shi Xiu Ying was one of the people who wanted her dead. "What happened?"

"I just spoke to Wu Bai Hee. The Angel cut her baby out of her body and ate it! She ate our savior!! The woman is more of a monster than a human. It is no wonder the creatures come here night after night for her. She has to be one of them. Who else eats children?"

Shi Xiu Ying flung herself into Song Tian’s arms, bawling her eyes out. She was so terrified when she was in Wu Bai Hee’s apartment. There was nothing preventing the Angel from killing her, too, but she had to try and protect the Princess as best she could. Even if she had to give up her life so that everyone could know the truth.

"And Wu Bai Hee, the Princess, told you that?" murmured the man as he gently soothed her. Nodding her head, she looked up at him, not caring about the tears on her face.

"The Princess said that the woman was probably a spirit user who was really good at manipulating people into doing what she wanted. She said that she probably wasn’t healing anyone; she just put that thought inside their head like... like... like a sugar pill," continued the girl as her body started to shake from her fear.

"A placebo," muttered Song Tian under his breath as he thought about what the girl was saying. She had lived beside him when he was in the fifth circle before he made it as a guard and moved to the third circle. She was a sweet, shy girl who always wanted to do the right thing. And Song Tina had no doubt about what she was saying...

Or, at least, he had no doubt that she believed what she was saying.

However, if someone was manipulating others into doing things... or believing things, he was sure that the Angel wasn’t the one doing it.

He had been outside.

He knew that the things coming into people’s homes every night were zombies, despite what Wu Bai Hee said. He also knew what his fellow guards had been instructed to do when they found citizens of City A outside of the walls.

"You hurry home," he said after a few minutes. "I’ll deal with it."

"You’ll help me kill the Angel? Princess won’t be able to sleep well if the Angel is alive." The innocent tone of her voice was at odds with her words. This sweet thing shouldn’t be thinking about killing someone... let alone someone who was actually trying to help.

"Let me see what I can do," answered Song Tian instead.

Right now, no one trusted each other. People were tying up loved ones outside of houses for the zombies to take instead, a desperate way to try and save themselves. Guards were called, and shots were fired if a friend even suggested that someone else was thinking about leaving.

This city had become a warzone to anyone who was willing to look and see it.

But no one was.

Everyone trusted Wu Bai Hee so blindly that even calling her by name was seen as sacrilegious. He was lucky that Shi Xiu Ying was too caught up in her own head to catch his mistake.

People had been killed for less.

"Thank you, Song Tian. And I miss you." Going up onto her toes, Shi Xiu Ying gave the man a kiss on the cheek before she took off toward the gate out of the core.

Happy that he didn’t need to reply, Song Tian turned to the guard beside him. "I need to go inform Zhao Jun Jie about what is going on," said Song Tian, straightening his back and looking at the other man.

He hated the fact that his comrade was able to hear the whole conversation, but it would have looked worse if he had pulled Shi Xiu Ying to the side. It would have looked like they both had something to hide.

"Of course," nodded the soldier. "You do that, and let me know what his response is. I am sure that he is upstairs trying to console the... Princess..."

That pause before he said ’Princess’ was all that Song Tian needed to hear to know what side the other man took.

He must have heard him calling her by her name.

"Thank you," sighed Song Tian as he quickly entered the building and took the stairs two at a time.

Finding the condo for the doctor, Song Tian started pounding on the door.

"Shut up, or you’ll wake the baby," hissed a man as soon as he opened the doors. Song Tian was stunned to see one of the Angel’s men at the door.

"Sorry," he gulped, not knowing what else to say. "But I need to speak to the Angel now; it is a matter of life or death."

"Yeah, yours if you wake the baby, do you understand? We just got her changed and down."

Song Tian nodded his head and quietly entered the condo. He needed to let everyone know what was going on so they could get the Angel out of the city before she died. The rest of the citizens could fend for themselves, but the Angel didn’t deserve to die by their hands.
