Fight, Flight, or Freeze: The Healer's Story -
Chapter 200: Body, Mind, And Spirit
Chapter 200: Body, Mind, And Spirit
I took the man’s hand and led him into my new office. I had yet to tell Bin An Sha that I had commandeered it from him, but I was pretty sure he got the picture.
My powers flowed through me like water, wrapping itself around the gentleman as I led him to the bed. I had quickly changed the sheets when the first patient showed up this morning and had been doing it ever since.
"Thank you for doing this, deary," smiled the man. His face told the story of a lifetime of happiness that I felt down to his bones. "My granddaughter, she worries."
"I can only imagine," I murmured as my gift healed the arthritis in his joints and replaced some of the worn-out cartilage in others. I even found a stage one tumor in his colon, one that would have progressed quickly without treatment.
Healing like this was as easy as breathing. It wasn’t painful like it had been at the Camp, nor was it tiring.
In fact, it felt like this was what I should have been doing my whole life.
The man held out his arm so that I could take his pulse, and I rested my two fingers on it, maintaining the connection. "It appears that you have a bit of arthritis," I said in a joking manner. With this level of pain that he had been experiencing, he would have been suffering from it long before the world ended.
"Just a smidge," he laughed, the tension in his body disappearing. "But I’m an old man. I’m lucky to have lived this long. I can take a bit of pain if it means my granddaughter has someone beside her. I was waiting until she got married before going to join with my wife... but the stubborn girl wants to be single. What am I to do?"
"You’re an amazing grandfather," I murmured, patting his hand. I turned around and walked over to one of the upper cabinets.
Taking out a bottle of vitamins, I took one out and handed it to the man. Then I poured a glass of water from the tap and gave that to him, too. "I don’t have a lot of drugs on me," I started, doing my standard disclaimer. "But these are turmeric capsules. It will help with inflammation and arthritis, as well as will lower your risk for heart disease. Take one a day for the next two weeks, and you should feel an improvement."
I counted out 13 capsules and then put them into a small bag.
I was desperately trying not to feel like a shady drug dealer... but I didn’t want to announce to everyone that I was a healer. This way, he would assume that his lack of pain and everything else was a result of the turmeric and not me.
Hell, if it came down to it, I would start making sugar pills and dispensing that as a ’cure all’ drug.
Placebos were a thing for a reason. And it just might give me the cover I wanted and needed.
"Thank you so much! I feel much better already," smiled the man, getting down from the bed a lot easier than he got up.
"You’ll be dancing a jig at your granddaughter’s wedding in no time," I laughed, leading him to the door. Opening it, I saw the granddaughter waiting on the other side. "Your grandfather is suffering from a bit of arthritis, nothing really to worry about. I prescribed something for him to take every day, starting tomorrow, for the next two weeks. If the symptoms persist, bring him back."
"Thank you, thank you so much! Are you sure we can’t give you something? Food? I have a few cookies that I saved from the last mission I went out on. I don’t mind giving them to you," asked the woman, tears filling her eyes at the ’good news’.
"No, seriously, I’m good. You keep those cookies for yourself and your grandfather," I assured her.
"If you’re sure?"
"I am. You need everything you can get your hands on during this time. Keep it for yourself."
"Thank you, you really are an Angel."
"Hardly," I chuckled. "I am nothing more than a doctor who wants what’s best for her patients."
"Still... thank you."
"You’re welcome. Now, walk slowly. Those stairs must have been hard coming up."
"Bah!" grunted the grandfather, a big smile on his face. "I feel like I could run up and down them a hundred times without tiring out."
"Well, let’s not put that to the test, shall we? Otherwise, you are going to be back here looking for something to soothe those aching muscles." I looked up to see Si Dong looking over at me.
I widened my eyes, looking a bit panicked, and he quickly picked up on my cue. The man was a god sent sometimes. He understood that while I could do the whole medical side of medicine... I sucked at small talk and bedside manners.
I mean, I tried, but it was kind of like watching a train wreak in slow motion.
Smoothly, he cut in, taking all of the attention onto himself as I slipped back into the room to change the sheets. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do once I ran out. Washing them simply because someone sat on them seemed like a waste of resources, but the doctor in me changed the sheets as a matter of course.
Oh well... I would figure that out later.
One more quick look around, and everything appeared to be in order.
Going back to the door, I opened it wide. "Who’s next?" I asked, looking around at all the people who wanted me to help them. Maybe that was the biggest difference... why I didn’t feel pain when I helped them. They wanted me to fix them. Their body, mind, and spirit were all opened to the healing, and those at the Camp fought it with every molecule of their being.
A young woman with a baby in her arms stood up from the couch, her partner hovering over her like she was his most precious treasure. "That would be us," she smiled as the family of three approached the medical room.
"Hello," I said, the bright smile never leaving my face. "I’m Doctor Wang, what can I do for you today?"
