Fight, Flight, or Freeze: The Healer's Story
Chapter 199: The City Of Angels

Chapter 199: The City Of Angels

It took less than 24 hours for rumors of an angel wading through seas of blood to cure the injured to start to spread around the city.

People in the third, fourth, and fifth circles started talking about the woman who didn’t ask for anything, who just wanted to heal. They said that she was the most beautiful person that they had ever seen, but her inner beauty far outshone her outer appearance.

There were even some whispers that she was more beautiful than the Princess.

But even though not everyone agreed with what she looked like, they all agreed on one thing. If you needed to be healed, you went to her.

To say that the guys were less than impressed with the rumor was an understatement.

"What the fuck!" growled Bin An Sha as yet another knock came at his door. People were coming out of the woodwork to meet the woman living with him, and they all brought gifts with them.

Rip smirked and shook his head as he opened the door, only to have to look down at the person on the other side.

"I was..." started the woman before turning pale at the sight of Rip. "I was told that the Angel lived here?" Her voice rose to a high-pitched squeak at the end of her sentence, and Rip was sure that if she didn’t need help, she would have already been gone.

"She is," smiled Rip. It made him happy to see that people understood his Little Bird’s worth. At the Camp, she was sneered at and threatened, while here, she was treated like the goddess she was. And he was happy about it.

The woman blinked a few times at him before opening her mouth again. "May I see her?"

"She is just in with someone else right now, but if you want a seat, I am sure that she would be more than happy to help."

Rip knew what it had cost her to heal the fighters at the Camp and understood that she wanted to distance herself from that as much as possible. But he also knew that healing was who she was. She didn’t need to use her power to do it. Sometimes, just listening to someone was enough.

And seeing her smiling on that field yesterday proved his point.

"Thank you," she said as she slipped around him and went to sit down on the couches. The living room had been converted into a waiting room of sorts, and even though it was only ten o’clock in the morning, there were more than a few people sitting around.

The door to the medical room opened, and a young man, no older than 20, walked out, a bright smile on his face. "Thank you, Doctor Wang," he smiled, holding up his arm with a brace on it.

"Not a problem," smiled his Little Bird. Unlike some of her smiles yesterday, this one was completely real. She was thriving, and it showed in every breath she took. "Remember, don’t get it wet for the next couple of days. Change the bandage every 12 hours, and if anything changes, come back and see me."

"Of course!" nodded the boy so hard he looked like a bobblehead that Rip had once seen in a store. "And really... thank you!"

"I’ll see you soon!" smiled Wang Tian Mu, and when the kid had left, she turned her attention back to the waiting room. "Now, who is next?"

An older man stood up, his daughter holding his arm as he fought to come to his feet. "That would be me, young Lady," he smiled as he slowly made his way around the couch and toward the medical room. "I hope you aren’t in a rush; it might take me a while."

"Take your time," she chuckled back, leaning against the door frame as she watched the older man approach. Rip shook his head at her actions. It was no wonder everyone seemed to love her; she understood all of their needs with just a brief glance.

"Is this because of yesterday?" asked Bin An Sha, coming up behind Rip. He, too, watched the older man, his power going forward, trying to find out where he was injured.

"Mostly," nodded Rip. "She once told me that the energy she gets from the Reavers helps to keep the darkness at bay a little longer. I didn’t ask her to explain, but the differences are startling when you aren’t used to it."

Bin An Sha nodded his head in agreement. "I’m going to have to find some more Reavers," chuckled Rip. "Might as well put them to good use if they make my woman this happy."

"It might not just be them," murmured Bin An Sha, keeping his voice low. "I think she might be able to do that with everyone; she just associated it with the Reavers because that was what she had on hand at the beginning."

Rip paused for a moment before slowly nodding his head. "Probably. But I don’t see her too willing to experiment. Especially when she knows the outcome."

Bin An Sha agreed. "Then I guess you are going to be busy for a while then, tracking down Reavers."

"Ha, you wish," replied Rip, the smile on his face becoming more relaxed and less sarcastic. "I have a few more chained up in a cage not too far away."

"The Reavers didn’t leave simply because the zombies did, did they?"

Rip shrugged his massive shoulders as the old man finally made it to the office and Wang Tian Mu. "There is almost no difference in taste when it comes to humans and zombies... they all tasted like steak. However, what does differ is the texture."

"The difference between a ribeye and a filet mignon?"

"Pretty much," grunted Rip.

"Good to know."

"Don’t blame me; you are the one that asked," chuckled Rip as the door closed behind his Little Bird, leaving the daughter on the outside.

Bin An Sha nodded his head. "Better to know the truth than to believe a lie. Even if the truth is a bit hard to swallow."

"Kind of like a human," replied Rip; this time, his laughter was loud enough to have everyone turning around to look at him.

"Too far, Rip, too far."
