Chapter 1187: Chapter 1187: Both Heartless and Unrighteous

In a flash, she slightly opened her mouth, wordless.

Her eyes sparkled intermittently, now bright, now dim, like a distant island’s light, hazy through the mist.

"I don’t remember if it’s 53 days or 63 days; to me, it’s just a number. As for you, to me, you are just a man," Ann Nolan said, her lips curved into an indifferent smile. "I don’t understand why you’re dragging this out. You clearly know that a woman’s youth and energy are limited—are you trying to wear me down into an old woman?"

"Ann... I don’t want the Santos Family anymore."

"Hmm?" Ann was even more taken aback, her eyes rippling with confusion as she looked at him. "You don’t want it anymore? Why not? I have been helping you to try and secure it, just needs a bit more time. The Santos Family... wasn’t your initial reason for marrying me to please Grandfather and secure the Santos Family? Now you don’t want it, how fortunate."

Ann laughed.

Her light laughter carried a concealable melancholy, like a spring breeze sweeping across a desert, ineffable.

Why not want it? The Santos Family was among the top in Landon, a renowned business icon.

Grandfather Santos was getting old; the family business would go to either Zaiden Santos or Zachary Santos, there would not be a third person.

For Zaiden Santos to give it up now would be foolish.

He was the legitimate eldest grandson, surely it should belong to him?

Ann touched her forehead, unsure if she was drunk, or if he was.

Maybe she had misheard.

"Ann..., the job..."

"Quit?" Ann chuckled, cutting off his words, "Zaiden Santos, what new trick are you trying to play? You’ve never respected my wishes. Want a secret marriage, I comply; want me to act along, I do; want me to quit my job, I should listen to you, right?"

"If I don’t listen, are you going to play some new tricks? I am actually quite curious how you would play this..."

Ann didn’t give Zaiden Santos a chance to rebut and finished in one breath.

Perhaps fueled by the alcohol, her words were laden with aggression.

"No matter what you think, I’ll explain once, your departure from TR has nothing to do with me," Zaiden Santos said coolly.

He looked into her eyes, her shrunken figure reflected in his pupils.

Ann also looked at him, her eyes red and her lashes wet with a light mist.

She was genuinely drunk, her gaze blurry as she leaned on him for support.

The next second, she laughed lightly, laughter ringing out.

"So adept at shifting blame, I must say you are the first such man I’ve met. Heartless and unprincipled. Yes, it has nothing to do with you, nothing to do with anyone else. I quit TR because I want to, because I no longer wanted the job, because I can’t tolerate even a grain of sand in my eye."

Ann’s laughter was unrestrained, like a thorny rose.

The corners of her lips tinged with a hint of scorn.

It had nothing to do with him, indeed.

She had left TR, and throughout it all, he hadn’t shown up.

But, it didn’t matter anymore, did it? So much time had passed...

It had been half a year since she’d been at Golden Growth.

TR was already history, already in the past for her.

"Believe it or not, whatever," Zaiden Santos said, his voice slightly hoarse as he coughed a few times, frowning slightly.

Ann looked at him, her soft, water-like eyes flashing with indifference. "Can you let go? This is the restroom."

"I’ll be home tonight."

"Oh."

"Will you come back tonight?" Zaiden Santos asked.

"Today is CEO Santos’s first day; there’s a banquet tonight."
