Chapter 820: Ridicule

Chaos erupted in the Intelligence the moment Valerie requested for a meeting and revealed the truth about the explosives. She didn’t divulge how she discovered the news or about Noah and the others’ involvement in the matter. She only claimed a source close to her to have tipped her off.

Questions arose about the credibility of the news. Having a source help them wasn’t a big deal, many of them did as well. However, to say someone tipped her off about explosives being hidden in 28 places in the country was far-fetched and not many were willing to believe it.

Valerie darted a glance around the meeting hall coldly. She had expected this outcome. She too would have reacted the same if she hadn’t handled the Jared case herself.

Valerie didn’t mind being questioned about the authenticity of the news. However, questioning her ethical skills just to mock her was something she wouldn’t ever tolerate and the current Chief, the man who had replaced Frederick Clarke was doing just that.

"Do not mind me wrong, Deputy Evans. But whatever you’re saying is completely idiotic. How are you sure that there are explosives in these cities?" The man questioned, his eyes flashing with evilness. His jealousy was evident on his face and quite a few people in the room understood that he was making things difficult for her.

"I understand your concerns, Sir. But there is no harm in being cautious. What if it isn’t a false alarm and we are actually in grave danger?" Valerie reasoned, convincing a few people among the lot. She nodded them nodding to themselves and hoped that they would express their support to her.

"We can search one or two places in the list I have and if we did end up with nothing, we can abort the mission," Valerie suggested, hoping for her Chief to agree.

Without his permission, she couldn’t seek the help of the SWAT team and they needed a bomb disposal squad. None of the people in the Intelligence was capable of handling bombs themselves. They weren’t trained for it.

Valerie trusted Noah’s information. There was no way in hell he’d lie to her or even give her any information without validating it. They were in some serious trouble and had to resolve the matter in 9 days. Otherwise...

Her eyes constricted when she thought of what would happen 9 days later if they failed to locate the explosives in time. ’I can’t allow the mishap to happen. I need to do something.’

With that thought, she clenched her fists and made up her mind. "Sir, this is all Jared’s master plan. It is he who planted the explosives to destroy us."

"Now, you’re being even more presumptuous, Deputy Evans." The man laughed, deriding her all the more. "Have you caught, Jared?"

Valerie remained silent. She couldn’t say that they already did. Otherwise, Noah and his team would be in serious trouble. After all, it was a crime in itself to hold a wanted criminal captive and Jared was the most wanted criminal on their list.

If she wasn’t sure about the law of the country and the possibility of Jared escaping alive, she would have dragged him and shoved him in her Chief’s face. Alas, she couldn’t do it.

"Where is he? Bring him to us and maybe we’ll believe you." He offered and Valerie bit her lip.

"Sir, but this is from a trusted source. Are we going to ignore the possibility of the country being in danger even though it’s less than one percent?"

"Do not try to bring statistics here, Deputy. I cannot grant permission for you to seek help from the SWAT team. If your information is wrong and there is nothing in those locations, I will be held accountable for wasting resources and time." The man stood up and so did everyone else.

For the first time in her life, Valerie started questioning the intelligence of the people in Intelligence. ’Is he trying to irk me on purpose or is he actually stupid?’ She wondered. Even if it is a hoax call, any cautious and responsible officer would check it out themselves before making decisions. But the man before her had blatantly rejected to even verify the claims.

Valerie felt the future flash before her. If he continued being the Chief, then the Intelligence would surely be ruined. However, it was a thought she could think about some other time. There was a crucial matter she had to handle first before the 9-day countdown ended.

"But Chief..."

"I think we are done here. Have a good day, Deputy." The man nodded and walked out and almost all but one team walked out after him.

"Deputy Evans," The leader of the only team remaining approached her breaking her out of her trance.

"Yes, Deputy Trevis?" Deputy stared at the man who was the only one to trust her always without any questions. Many times, they had solved many complicated cases together for which she was eternally grateful. Without his support, it would have been difficult for her team alone to handle the cases.

"Is the information verified?" He questioned, his observant eyes fixed on her face.

"Yes, Deputy Trevis. My source has verified it. You can trust me on that."

"Then, you have our team’s support, Deputy Evans. We will assist you as much as possible."

"Thank you, Deputy Trevis. I appreciate your help. Really. But we need a bomb disposal squad and without the Chief’s permission, we cannot seek their help. I’m at my wit’s ends. I don’t know what to do." Valerie raised her hands in defeat and let out a sigh.

"It’s a problem for sure. Let me try to contact my sources. Maybe we can find some help from somewhere." The man offered and Valerie nodded at him, already grateful for his trust in her.

After promising to contact her in a few minutes, the man too left with his team, leaving Valerie, Maggie, Ryder, and Preston in the room.

"What do we do now, Val? How are we going to handle this situation?" Preston enquired, his shoulders dropping for a moment.

"Why don’t we seek help from Noah?" Maggie suggested. "There must be a few capable men who can handle the explosives in his team."

"No, I cannot drag him into this issue. He will be in great trouble if anyone learns about his involvement." Valerie shook her head and rejected the suggestion immediately.

"Then, what are we going to do now?" Ryder pursed his lips, his anger for the dickhead of his Chief bursting through him once more.

"What if Noah knows someone from the SWAT team or something and he can help us?" Maggie still didn’t give up on the suggestion and tried to reason with Valerie. "There’s no harm in giving it a try, Val. Noah or any of his friends are a lot more influential than you think."

Valerie wasn’t willing to drag Noah into the mess. But she knew she had no choice. Given the situation they were in, she could only look for him. Maybe he had a way to handle the problem.

Eventually, under Maggie’s watchful eyes, she pulled out her phone and made the call.
