Chapter 819: Location detection - Part 2
Five minutes later, Joshua was ready with his laptop while Noah was on a video call with Mia.
"Mia, are you in your Dad’s study?" Joshua took the phone over and questioned her.
"Yes, I am. What do I do?"
"Have you checked all the documents, perhaps there are a few you have missed." Joshua queried.
"I have. I looked everywhere including the secret locker I found only today. Other than the document I sent you, there is nothing else."
"What about your Dad’s laptop? Has he taken it with him?"
"No, he hasn’t, surprisingly."
"Didn’t you find anything in it?"
"Ohh, that...." Mia hesitated before coming clean. "I’m unable to unlock it. I tried a few times but I don’t know the pin."
"Easy. Mia, now do as I say." Joshua leaned forward and started typing a set of codes on his laptop while instructing Mia at the same time.
"Yeah, tell me."
"Is your phone connected to your wifi?"
"Yes."
"Okay. Turn on your father’s laptop."
"One minute."
Mia’s face vanished from the phone screen and Joshua heard her moving a few things before she returned.
"Done. What do I do next?"
"Can you check if the laptop is connected to your wifi? Even if the device is locked, it will connect to the wifi automatically if the connection is set as home." Joshua explained and Mia did as she was told.
"Yes, it’s connected."
"Good. I’m going to start now. Thank you, Mia."
Joshua then handed the phone back to Noah who was listening to their conversation calmly while he got to action. Running his fingers swiftly over the keyboard, Joshua typed a string of codes for a few minutes before he finally hacked into the laptop.
"Don’t be spooked, Mia. It’s just me hacking into your father’s laptop." Joshua explained before he hit the enter button, and the next instant, he gained access to the laptop.
Joshua then calmly started to look into each folder and as time passed, he found quite a few documents which he was sure the police would be interested in.
"Interesting.’ He mused when he came across an encrypted folder. Excitement coursed through him and he started to decrypt the file. Although the file was protected behind a strong encryption wall, to Joshua, it was child’s play and he opened the folder in no time.
"Oh my God!" Joshua exclaimed when the contents of the folder appeared on the screen. "You may want to look at this, Noah."
Joshua pushed the laptop in the middle, allowing Noah to take a look. Just as he had expected, Noah too had the same reaction as him.
"This is some utter shit." Noah was shocked to read the contents. Stevenson had journaled all that Jared and he had done, all the crimes they had committed, including not just hiding explosives and preparing the destroy the country. There were records of the smuggling of drugs, human trafficking, child kidnapping, and much more.
"What a scoundrel!" Noah cursed, unable to control himself anymore. He didn’t care that Mia was still on the call and she had heard every word of his even though she didn’t know what was happening.
"We are sorry, Mia. Your father is a monster." Joshua clarified. " And we have to evidence which he himself has recorded."
Mia sucked in a deep breath as she digested the news. "I understand. I stopped considering him as my father the day he locked me. He is no one to me now."
Joshua was surprised by her words. She was morally upright and honest, something he hadn’t seen in a long while.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here?" Joshua finally got what he was looking for.
Although it was the same document, Mia had sent them, the one in the laptop held a lot more information. There were some more coordinates leading to nowhere and he eventually cracked the actual coordinates.
"The coordinates we had previously were only half of it." He explained and Noah’s face scrunched up in confusion.
"There are a lot more coordinates here and only when we combine these will we get the correct coordinates." Joshua opened a notepad and typed both the coordinates, one on the laptop and the one on the file, and ended up getting a coordinate that matched the city beside it.
"Oh, well, fuck!" He scratched his head when he continued to crack the other coordinates.
"What is it? What’s wrong?" Noah couldn’t fathom what had happened all of a sudden. Why Joshua so was vexed in a blink of an eye?
"If I add the coordinate on the file first and then the one on the laptop, I get one set of coordinates and if I reverse the order, I get another and both the sets match with the cities they are pertaining to. So, if I’m not wrong...
"We have 28 places, not 14." Noah completed his words and Joshua nodded in affirmation.
"Fucking hell!"
Noah stood up and called Valerie immediately to inform her of the situation, while Joshua continued to search Stevenson’s laptop, looking for anything else that could help them solve the problem quickly.
’This is more twisted than I thought.’ He mumbled as he stared at several photographs, each depicting how heinous Jared and Stevenson could be. ’Are they even human? They are worse than beasts. At least, beasts have hearts. These two don’t.’
Joshua finally came to the last folder. It didn’t have anything particularly interesting, other than a software that was flashing a countdown.
"9 days, 17 hours, 24 minutes, 14 seconds." Joshua watched the countdown shift and he wondered what it was representing before his eyes widened in realization.
"Shit! Shit! Shit! Noah, come here." He shouted, startling his friend who was still on the phone.
"What is it, Jo? Why are you..." Noah stopped speaking when he saw the countdown on the screen and he understood what was happening immediately.
"Damn it." He gritted his teeth and returned to his call with Valerie. "Deputy, we need to buck up. We have only 9 days left before the bombs detonate. We need to find them before they explode."
