Chapter 789: Waking up - Part 1
It was past nine at night, and no one had left the hospital. They were all waiting for the moment Ivy would wake up. They wanted to be there when she did. It was, after all, a joyous occasion for them.
Given a chance, they wanted to huddle up in the ICU and wait for Ivy to wake up. But since the hospital had rules, they waited outside instead while just a nurse was stationed to keep an eye on her.
Aria kept pacing back and forth in worry as she glanced at the ICU for the thousandth time. Her heart was fluttering in hope and delight. All she needed was for her sister to wake up and everything would be alright.
"Aria, calm down," Noah stopped her from taking another step further when he noticed how agitated she looked. She was only tiring herself, and he didn’t have the heart to see her this way. He understood her sentiments, and he was equally excited as her. But that did not mean she could fret over it and overthink.
"I can’t, Noah. I’m too excited to think about anything. I’m just waiting for the moment when Ivy will wake up, and everything will return to normal." Aria smiled, and Noah pulled her to him, hugging her tight as he glanced at Joshua, who was staring out of the window.
’If only it were that simple,’ he thought.
Noah had no idea what Joshua was planning. His behavior scared him, and even more so when he realized that Joshua had become overly obsessed with Ivy after the incident. He could foresee a storm in the future, one which would be unpleasant and messy. Although it was just his notion, he had an inkling that Joshua would never allow Ivy to leave him. He had almost lost her once; he couldn’t do it again.
Noah didn’t say a word as he led Aria to the chair and sat down with her beside him as he glanced at Oliver. The man hadn’t moved much from his place. But his shaking feet gave him away. He was equally anxious and restless as his daughter, and Noah, for the first time in days, smiled albeit helplessly. At least, they were not crying or in sorrow.
Ronnie entered with a bag full of packed food and handed a box each to all of them. When it was Aria’s turn, she raised her head and smiled at him, startling him with her unexpected actions.
"Madam?" Ronnie was confused, and he glanced at his Boss who looked equally puzzled as him. "What’s wrong? Is the food not to your liking?"
"Ronnie, thank you." Aria smiled, gratitude filling her eyes in an instant, and Ronnie went silent all of a sudden.
"I haven’t been myself since the last few days, you know after the incident. I can’t help but notice the help you provided us in the time needed. I can’t thank you enough, Ronnie." Aria expressed and smiled softly at him.
"Madam, I was doing my duty." Ronnie couldn’t understand Aria’s thought process, and he continued to stare at her, baffled.
"You did more than just your duty, Ronnie. Really." Aria glanced at Noah, who held a gentle look on his face before she took the box from Ronnie.
Ronnie still didn’t know why he was being thanked all of a sudden, and he looked at his Boss for help. But the man in question had his eyes fixed on his lady. So, he ignored Ronnie completely and took the box from him absentmindedly.
Ronnie couldn’t fathom Aria’s thought process. But he could, and he understood clearly why she had thanked him.
Aria was not a heartless person. She knew who was genuinely good to her and her family. And she was right in a way as well. Ronnie had done a lot more than what was required of him, and for the first time in his life, he realized how capable the man was. As the West family said, he was surely a cool man.
’I should probably send him on vacation when the danger disappears forever,’ he thought and raised his head finally to smile at Ronnie.
Ronnie was scared out of his wits to see his Boss smiling at him, and he almost collapsed in fright. ’What is wrong with Boss today? Did I do something wrong? Why is he smiling at me creepily? Is this him sending me a silent warning?’
Noah had no idea what was running in Ronnie’s mind. He was more focused on Aria and Oliver than anyone else, and his gaze returned to them once he was done smiling at Ronnie. The poor guy didn’t know if he should ask him for clarification.
Even though he wanted to find out, he gave up on it. His life was more important than any clarification. He’d find out the truth when the time was right. He should just brace himself and wait for his death sentence until then.
Ronnie handed a box to Joshua as well, which he took without a word. There was something different about him, Ronnie noticed. He couldn’t catch upon it. The man had changed but for good or bad? Only time would tell.
Aria hogged on her food as if someone was going to steal it from her, and Noah couldn’t help but chuckle when he saw her puffed-up face.
"Eat slowly. No one is going to snatch your food."
"Sorry, I’m just way too excited." She mumbled with food in her mouth as she smiled sheepishly at him, and Noah shook his head helplessly.
"The nurse will inform us once Ivy wakes up. Don’t worry much."
"I’ll try," Aria stated, but her actions didn’t change, and she continued to devour her food much to Noah’s amusement.
She had only finished half of the box when Ivy’s attending doctor came running towards the ICU, startling everyone, and they stood up in an instant.
They didn’t have time to stop him and ask him anything. The doctor entered the ICU. His sudden appearance made their thoughts run wild. While hope was the prominent emotion in them, they couldn’t brush off their worry as well as they waited for him to reappear.
Finally, after a slow agonizing twenty minutes, he exited the ICU, and Ian was the first to rush to him.
"Doctor, what’s the matter?"
"The patient has woken up, and I can finally say she’s out of danger."
