Chapter 788: Non-existent

Noah examined Joshua for a few moments. But he couldn’t fathom what was running in his mind. It was as if Joshua was not Joshua anymore and Noah didn’t know if it was a good thing or bad. He was scared, not just for Ivy but for Joshua as well.

"Joshua, don’t do anything that you’ll regret in the future," Noah warned and Joshua let out a helpless chuckle.

"I’m done being reckless, Noah. My carelessness, my stupidity, and my selfishness put my girl in danger. Isn’t it high time I corrected myself and became a good man for her?" Joshua’s eyes were filled with a strange emotion that neither Ian nor Noah could comprehend.

"Joshua..." Ian was terrified. But before he could speak another word, Joshua shook his head, forcing him to stop speaking.

"Is there anything else you want to speak about?" Joshua directed his gaze to Noah who had gone silent all of a sudden.

"Ahh, yes." Noah snapped out of his thoughts when he sensed two pairs of eyes on him. "I’ve captured Amber."

"Good," Joshua replied even before Ian could. "Keep her alive. Ivy will take care of her once she wakes up."

Joshua stated as if he was speaking about cooking lunch rather than about a captive.

"Don’t you want to know what I found out?"

"Are you talking about her plan?"

Noah felt incredulous and he stared at Joshua in shock. All of a sudden, he had become smart and cunning and Noah didn’t know if it was good or bad.

"Yeah."

"I guessed it."

"Guys, what am I missing?" Ian looked back and forth between the two men who were speaking in cryptic words.

"Well, you must already have guessed that Amber and Jared were working together." Noah started and glanced at Joshua who was unfazed by the conversation they were having.

"Yes. What about it?"

"I found out what she told Joshua that day and what made him break up with Ivy. It was all their plan and Joshua reacted exactly how they wanted."

"I see." Ian didn’t probe further. He was in no way interested to find out what had happened between Amber and Joshua and what the reason behind Joshua’s obnoxious actions was. So, he didn’t probe further into and Noah himself was unwilling to speak anymore. After all, it concerned Joshua’s pride and even though their relationship was strained currently, he had no intentions of hurting him.

"Noah," Joshua raised his head all of a sudden and the intensity in his eyes stunned the other two.

"Hmm?"

"Thank you so much."

"Why are you thanking me?" Noah couldn’t comprehend Joshua’s train of thought. All of a sudden, his friend had become unreadable. It was as if he was meeting a new Joshua altogether.

"Just like that. Thank you for everything."

"Not a problem." Noah didn’t know what else to say. Taking a few more glances at him, he finally returned his attention to Ian who had gone silent all of a sudden.

"What else did the doctor tell you? How’s Ivy?" Noah had not missed how Ian had stepped aside to speak to the doctor and he didn’t have to guess what he was asking.

"Well, Ivy is fine for now. But we’ll only know the truth once she wakes up." Ian replied honestly and sneaked a glance at Joshua who was listening to him attentively.

"What do you mean?"

"Since she was struck in the head, there is a high chance of her suffering from the after-effects," Ian explained.

"What kind of after-effects?"

"I’m not sure. It varies from being paralyzed to losing one or more of her senses. We can’t brush off the possibility of her losing her memory as well." Ian revealed his worries and Noah sucked in a deep breath. He now didn’t know if he should be happy that Ivy was waking up or sad that she would suffer from the effects of her injury to her brain. He felt pathetic and lost and he turned to Joshua who held a similar expression to him.

"I’m not saying that Ivy will show these signs." Ian clarified when he noticed how depressed the two men had become all of a sudden. "There is a high chance that she wouldn’t have any problems as well. We’re just being careful. We can only find out once she gains consciousness fully."

Joshua let out a breath in defeat and ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "Fuck!" He had never felt that helpless before. Given a chance, he was more than happy to swap places with Ivy. She didn’t deserve this pain and trauma and it broke him from within when he realized that she’d never be able to forget the scars of her injury, be it to her body or her heart.

"Don’t be disheartened, Joshua." Ian tried even though he couldn’t bring himself to calm down. It sounded hypocritical of him to ask his friend to do the same.

"Ivy, please be fine. That is all I ask of you." Joshua looked up as he mumbled to himself before he looked at his feet.

"Aria is coming this side," Noah warned when he saw Aria walking towards them and everyone became alert at once.

"Guys, what’s wrong? Is something the matter?" Aria looked at Ian and Noah questioningly. She completely disregarded Joshua. The man had no place in her heart now and he had become invisible to her as well.

"Nothing, Aria. I was just telling them what happened in the afternoon and how Ivy reacted to you every time you spoke to her." Ian lied conveniently. She was already stressed about her sister’s state. He didn’t wish to add more to her worries by telling her what exactly they were conversing about.

"We were just wondering if it was twins’ bond doing the miracle."

"I thought something terrible happened." Aria sighed in relief and beamed and Ian and Noah returned with smiles of their own as they hid their pain.

Meanwhile, Joshua looked at her with agony. He knew he deserved such treatment from her. But he still hoped for her to at least look at him.

Alas, his wish remained unfulfilled. Aria didn’t even look at him even once before she returned to her father.
