Chapter 787: Changed Joshua

The entire family heard about Ivy gaining consciousness and the joy they felt was unprecedented. They couldn’t stop smiling as relief and excitement filled them. It’d not be long before Ivy woke for real and just the mere thought about it was enough to make them giddy.

"Doctor, how is she? How’s my daughter?" Oliver rushed to the doctor who was approaching them with reports in his hands.

The moment Ivy had woken up, they had performed some tests on her, the results of which were yet to be disclosed.

Oliver stared at the doctor expectantly and his smile only served to the old man to pin his hopes up.

"I have good news for all of you." The doctor chirped as he glanced at all the people who had assembled before him. "Ivy is showing signs of waking up and if my analysis is right, there is a high chance that she’ll gain consciousness tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest."

While Oliver broke down in joy, the others couldn’t control their delight. If not for the place, they would’ve shouted at the top of their lungs to express their happiness.

Among them, Ian was the calmest and he stepped aside to speak a word or more with the doctor.

"Doctor, is there anything else we should be knowing?"

"Doctor Davis, according to the reports, all her organs are functioning normally. But since she was injured in the head, more specifically her brain, we’ll have to wait for her to gain consciousness to know if there is any after-effect. Only then, I can say anything else."

"I understand, Doctor. Thank you." Ian smiled gratefully and the doctor nodded in return.

"I’ll take my leave now, Doctor Davis. I’ll be here tonight as well to monitor the patient. Call me if there is anything else."

Ian understood his subtle indication and he nodded at him.

While Aria and Oliver hugged each other as they expressed their elation, Noah hadn’t stopped smiling even once as he looked at the father and the daughter duo. However, it was Joshua who had the greatest reaction. He was not just happy and relieved, Ian felt a myriad of other emotions pass through his eyes, disgust being the strongest among them.

Joshua was disgusted with himself and Ian didn’t have to speak to him to know that he was regretting all that he did, all that he had said to Ivy. Alas, there was no room for regrets. It was all up to Ivy now. It was up to her if she wanted to get back together with Joshua or not.

"May I have a word with you?" Noah approached him all of a sudden and Ian was forced to break out of her thoughts.

Surprised, Ian nodded at him and followed him before Noah approached Joshua as well. All he did was tilt his head and Joshua understood his intentions immediately.

Without a word, the three people stepped away from Aria and Oliver. Although they were far away from their hearing distance, they were close enough to keep an eye on them.

"What do you have to say, Noah? Is something the matter?" Ian had noticed his friend’s sudden change in expression and since he wanted to speak to them all of a sudden, it had got to do something with Ivy, more specifically about the incident.

Since the day Ivy went into a coma, Noah had taken it upon himself to track Jared as quickly as possible. The man had wreaked their lives enough. It was time for them to send him to hell.

Ian felt terrible for his friend. While he had been busy at the hospital, Noah had taken all the matters of the base over himself and the effect of it was visible on his face. Noah seemed utterly drained out. Yet, how he was managing to keep himself up and going on, only he knew.

"According to my sources, Jared was last seen in Vietnam."

"Vietnam you say?" Joshua was the first to butt in and the sheer hatred in his eyes stunned the other two men.

"Yes. That was what I found two days ago."

"Then, what are we waiting for? Release the news that Ivy is going to gain consciousness soon. Or even better, let’s wait for her to gain consciousness tonight and release the news that she is awake directly." Joshua suggested and Noah’s gaze narrowed as he looked at his ’friend’ thoughtfully.

"You mean to say...."

"Wouldn’t that be a good trap to capture Jared? I’m sure once he hears the news, he’ll return to the country. After all, he wanted to not just harm us, he wanted to kill Ivy. Since his plan was foiled, he’ll return to accomplish it again." Joshua said darkly.

Noah observed his friend who had become sinister all of a sudden. The change in him surprised him, especially so after how he behaved around Ivy. He couldn’t fathom how the sunny man had become dark all of a sudden. There were no jokes, no light-hearted banter. Joshua had become a completely different man and Noah was unsure if he should be happy or worried about the change in him.

"Joshua, are you okay?" Ian pressed his shoulder as he looked at him in concern. Irrespective of Joshua’s behavior towards Ivy, he was once their friend and they couldn’t brush off the bond they had between them just like that.

"I guess so." Joshua shrugged lightly. He was unsure himself.

After the day he hurt Ivy, he couldn’t bring himself to be happy or jovial anymore. He didn’t deserve any happiness. Ivy was the best thing that had ever happened to him and he had destroyed her with his own hands. Even though they didn’t know about Jared’s plan, if not for him, there was a high chance that Ivy wouldn’t be lying in the hospital, wounded and on the brink of her death.

Yes, there was a good chance that Jared would have struck again if his attempt that day hadn’t been fruitful. But at least, Ivy would then have her guards following her and she wouldn’t have had to storm out of the house without them.

Joshua loathed himself more than he loathed Jared. He was ashamed of himself and no amount of self-justification could erase the guilt in his heart. Heck, he didn’t know if he could cleanse himself of the sin he had committed.

Only Joshua knew how he had spent the last few days. Ivy was the girl he loved truly and seeing her unresponsive and in a coma killed him.

Joshua didn’t know if Ivy would forgive him for breaking her heart. But he was willing to spend an eternity begging for forgiveness. He was even ready to spend his life as her slave.

"Joshua..." Ian didn’t know what else to say and gave his friend a helpless look.

"You do not have to look at me that way, Ian. I know how badly I fucked up. But what do I do? I can’t live without her."

"What are you going to do?" Noah started to have an ominous feeling all of a sudden and he looked at his friend skeptically.

Instead of answering him, Joshua smiled cryptically. "I have my plans. But trust me this once. I’ll kill myself first even before thinking about hurting Ivy. I promise."
