Chapter 780: Visitors
In no time, Ivy’s incident spread to everyone in the family, and Daniel and Rachel were the first ones to rush to the hospital. When they saw the state Ivy was in, Rachel almost burst into tears while Daniel was mortified.
Of course, he was Aria’s best friend. But that didn’t mean, he didn’t consider Ivy his good friend. It was true that they bickered every time they met. But that was their way of showing off their friendship.
When Daniel saw the state Ivy was in and given the possibility that she might never wake up, never, he felt the ground under him collapse. He had been swamped with work recently and hadn’t had time to speak to either Aria or Ivy. So, he had no idea what was happening with them and how their lives were.
"Ivy..." His lips trembled as he watched the unconscious girl lying on the bed. "What is this, Ivy? I didn’t speak to you for a few days and you become like this. This is not fair." He complained, hoping for his friend to hear him and argue back like she usually did in the past.
"And...and...and...." He stuttered as he tried to breathe while he controlled his emotions. "It’s not your style to be lying here like this. You should be out there performing more sting operations and exposing the scum to the society. How can you be like this when the world out there needs you? When we need you?"
Rachel couldn’t control her tears anymore and she dived into Daniel’s embrace as she sobbed quietly.
"Get up now, Ivy." His tone was harsh but his eyes were pleading the unconscious lady. "Please wake up, Ivy. We need you. Your loved ones need you. Just wake up. I promise I’ll never bicker with you. Never again."
His words only served to make Rachel cry harder until a patch of wetness appeared on his shirt. But he didn’t give a damn about it and continued to pour out his emotions to his friend. However, the said friend remained unresponsive all along and finally, Daniel ran out of words to say.
"Get well soon, Ivy. I’ll visit you again tomorrow." Daniel mumbled, his shoulders sagging in defeat. Although he wanted to continue staying, he knew others were waiting to meet Ivy. So, he didn’t hold up their time.
When Daniel and Rachel exited the ICU, Oliver, Ian and Joshua were not the only ones; Joshua’s parents, Theo and Noah’s parents had arrived as well. However, Aria and Noah were nowhere in sight and Daniel looked at Ian questioningly.
"Aria fainted out of stress and exhaustion. We had to admit her as well." He explained and Daniel closed his eyes tight, hoping all that he was hearing, all that he was seeing was a dream, a horrible nightmare he’d wake up from soon.
Daniel didn’t ask anymore and stepped aside, allowing Joshua’s parents to enter the ICU. Moments later, when they returned, their state was no less different than the others. With Mrs. Martin’s red, teary eyes and Mr. Martin leaving the ICU with a heavy heart, it was evident how much they cared about Ivy.
A dark, somber atmosphere settled over everyone and a feeling of suffocation started to creep in on them. While sadness overpowered every other emotion, a feeling of helplessness and anger spread through them as well.
They felt helpless to see Ivy in a coma and were infuriated and abhorred Jared even more than before. Given a chance, everyone among them wanted to find Jared by hook or by crook and tear his limbs apart before giving him a slow death. He deserved to be killed a hundred times and a thousand times more and even then, they’d not be satisfied.
Nobody wanted to leave. But it was a hospital after all and they had to. They couldn’t crowd over and disturb others. So, after meeting Ivy and expressing their heartfelt words to her, they departed from the place. Except Ian, Joshua and Oliver, everybody else left the hospital one by one.
"Mr. West, I think you should go home as well. We’ll take care of everything here." Ian suggested when he saw Oliver’s exhausted self. Although he was more exhausted than him, he could hold on for a few hours. But Oliver seemed as if he was on the verge of collapsing. The man desperately needed to sleep for a few hours.
"No, no, I’ll not leave my daughter alone. I won’t." Oliver denied vehemently. "She needs me."
"Mr. West...."
"I left her alone in others’ care and she was rendered to such a state. I’ll take care of her from now onwards. I’ll protect her. I don’t trust anybody else."
Oliver’s words stung Ian and Joshua, especially Joshua. Although the man was not saying it directly or pointing fingers at him, he knew he was speaking about him. But whether he was being intentional or unintentional, Joshua didn’t know.
"But Mr. West, if you wish to take care of Ivy, you need to be healthy. If you fall sick, then how can you take care of Ivy." Ian reasoned, not caring that Oliver didn’t trust him too.
Ian understood him and his pain. After all, Oliver was Ivy’s father and to see his dear girl in such a state would break any father’s heart. Why should he trust anyone else then? He had trusted her with others in the past and look what happened. It was true that they had failed to protect her and Ian considered himself to be equally at fault.
If only, if only he hadn’t agreed to Ivy and Joshua being together, maybe Ivy would be with them. Maybe, everything would be normal.
"Do you think I’ll be able to sleep through this?" Oliver smiled in sorrow and his expression showed how much agony he was in. "I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep well until my little girl wakes up." He sniffled and Ian sighed helplessly. He didn’t know how else to convince the man.
"But you’re right. I cannot allow myself to fall sick. Otherwise, who will take care of Ivy? I need to remain healthy."
Ian nodded at him and when Oliver stood up, he held his hand to support him. "I’ll ask one of the guards to take you home."
Oliver barely nodded at him. Glancing at the ICU once more, he walked away, leaving his desolate back to the two men who had not spoken to each other after Ian’s previous outburst.
