Chapter 775: Critical - Part 1
Ian leaned against the wall as he dialed Oliver’s number. He was scared of the man’s reaction. But he had no choice. How he wished for everything to be a nightmare, one which he could wake up from at the end, one where no one was hurt. Alas, it was all his wishful thinking.
With trembling hands, he held his phone and waited for the call to connect.
"Mr. West, this is Ian speaking." He swallowed his saliva as he tried hard to control his emotions but failed miserably.
"Ian. Is everything alright? Why are you calling me at this time of the night?" Oliver’s tone was laced with exhaustion and sleep and Ian felt bad for him.
"And where are the others? I’ve been trying to contact Aria and Ivy. But I’m unable to reach them. Are you guys together?" Oliver questioned as he stifled a yawn.
The trust in his voice broke Ian completely. Oliver had trusted his daughters with them and they had failed to protect them. While one among them was at least safe, the other was battling between life and death and he just hoped she’d emerge victorious at the end.
Ian felt tears filling his eyes as he lowered his head. He didn’t know what to feel at that moment. Did Oliver have it any less difficult in his life previously that now he had to deal with such a tragedy as well? Why was his life so pitiful?
"Mr. West, come to the hospital quickly?" Ian said hastily and looked up to stop his tears.
"Ian, what’s wrong? What happened?"
Ian didn’t miss Oliver’s cry of alarm and a sense of helplessness filled him.
"Mr. West, Ivy and Aria met with a dangerous incident. Please could..."
"I’ll be there soon."
Ian closed his eyes as he sighed in defeat. But soon, his eyes fluttered open when he heard Joshua’s voice.
"Doctor, how’s Ivy? Is she fine? Is she out of danger?" He threw a string of questions at him as he stopped the doctor who had just left the OT.
Ian too rushed to the doctor and stared at him hopefully.
"Doctor Davis, we..." The doctor hesitated not knowing how to put forth the bad news he had before the two men. "We’re losing the patient. She has been hit multiple times on her head with a heavy object and it seems her skull is fractured. We’ll have to do some scans to find out how horrible the damage is." He explained and Joshua felt his entire world shatter.
"Doctor, is she..."
"She’s there and we’re trying our best. But it’s hard to say anything now. I cannot guarantee anything." The doctor explained the situation. But Ian knew that he was hiding something and summoned him towards the side, away from Joshua who seemed to have broken down completely.
"Doctor, please be honest with me. How is Ivy?" Ian knew that the situation was worse than what the doctor had told them just now.
The doctor pursed his lips. "Doctor Davis, you’re a doctor yourself. You must know the patient’s condition by now. I’ll not hide anything from you. We can barely detect the patient’s pulse and she’s not responding to any treatment. We’re losing her slowly. Her wounds are serious and the chances of us saving her are less than 0.1%. Only a miracle can save her now."
Tears slipped out of Ian’s eyes immediately and he covered his mouth to prevent himself from letting out his emotions. Although the doctor had not said the words explicitly, he knew what he was trying to say.
"No!" Aria screamed in anguish suddenly, gaining everyone’s attention to her.
Ian had no idea when Aria had gained consciousness and had arrived. But she was there with Noah behind her and had heard everything the doctor had told him.
Aria’s legs gave away instantly and she collapsed to the ground at once.
"Aria!" Noah held her in his arms. But the force of her fall pulled him along with her and he squatted beside her as he hugged her tight.
"Ivy!" Aria wailed and her state broke the men’s hearts. Even the doctor felt terrible to see his colleague in such a predicament. He knew that the patient inside was his colleague’s twin and it killed him from within as he was bound. The situation was beyond his abilities. Heck, even the world’s best doctors would have a hard time bringing her back.
Aria’s wails filled the corridor. The hospital had been sealed and no one but the staff was allowed to enter the floor. Ronnie had stationed his men to guard the place and the moment they heard the cries, they felt pathetic. It was heart-wrenching and filled with agony.
"Ivy, you cannot leave me. Ivy!" Aria screamed as she crawled towards the OT while Noah tried to stop her.
"Aria, Aria." He didn’t know what else to say. He could only take her name as he looked at her helplessly.
He had been waiting beside Aria as her doctor in charge treated her. Her wounds her superficial and she had lost consciousness due to shock. Her life was not in danger.
The doctor had not even finished treating her wounds when she woke up with a start and demanded to see Ivy. None of his words worked on her and she ran from the ward towards the OT, only for her hopes to crash when she heard the doctor speaking to Ian.
Noah too understood the meaning behind the doctor’s words and his state was no less miserable than Aria’s. It was killing him from within that he couldn’t do anything at all. Everything was spiraling out of his control and how he wished to exchange his life with Ivy’s.
"I’ll try my best, Doctor West." The doctor stated before he returned to the OT.
Aria’s eyes were swollen and red and coupled with her injured face, she looked awful. And watching her cry harder, only made the two men cry with her as well.
On the other side, Joshua’s situation was no less different. Tears slipped out of his eyes as he stared ahead in a daze. The world had become nothing to him. Ivy was all that mattered to him.
Aria’s cries didn’t even reach his ears. He had become deaf and blind to everything else. All he had in mind and heart was Ivy and the words the doctor had told him.
