Chapter 207: Under Arrest

"Governor Corrick has been arrested on charges of corruption, embezzlement, misuse of public funds, and bribery. Sources confirm that the arrest follows a detailed complaint filed with the authorities, outlining years of alleged misconduct and a complex web of illicit dealings. Authorities have stated that Governor Corrick will remain in custody while a full investigation is conducted into what is described as an ’extensive list of criminal activities.’"

"According to an unnamed source, this complaint has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, and there are whispers of more arrests to follow as investigators unravel the network connected to Governor Corrick’s alleged crimes. Public reaction remains mixed, with protests erupting all over the place in support of Governor Corrick who has been a prominent figure in the landscape of Vancity politics for more than three decades.

Matthew Dawn, who had been sipping his morning coffee leisurely, choked on it, coughing violently as he stared at the screen. What the? Was he imagining things?

However, in the next minute, the camera cut to footage of a pale, grim-faced Governor Corrick being led away in handcuffs, flanked by officers. His uncle seemed to be staring at the camera as if he would like to come out of it and kill him right at this moment. Matthew gulped. How was this possible? And who could have filed a complaint that led to Uncle Corrick’s sudden arrest? Could it be Serena?

But he immediately vetoed that thought the next minute. No. Serena was waiting for information about her brother. And she had yet to pay him to escape as well. Which meant that she would not take this step. But then, who could? No. First, he would need to ask Serena. For his own safety. Once his uncle ws in custody, he would definitely discover the evidence. And if he traced the evidence back to him, then all hell would break loose.

Matthew fumbled for his phone, his fingers trembling as he pulled up Serena’s number. He pressed the call button, the dialtone sounding louder and more ominous in the silence of his living room.

"Pick up, pick up..." he muttered under his breath, pacing the room now, all his leisure of the morning forgotten! He should definitely stop watching the morning news these days! It has somehow turned horrible for him. The last time he’d been watching, the news had been filled with Ava and Lydia’s scandals. And now, it was Uncle Corrick’s scandal. Dam* it!

The call went to voicemail.

"Dammit, Serena! Are you ignoring me?" Matthew growled, ending the call and immediately trying again. Still, no answer.

A thousand questions swirled in his mind. Why had she filed the complaint so soon? They had discussed waiting for the right moment to ensure their plan didn’t blow up in their faces. This move was premature—and dangerous.

Unable to sit still, Matthew grabbed his suit jacket, shoved his phone into his pocket, and stormed out the door. The chill of the morning air did little to calm his nerves as he hurried to his car. If she had gone rogue on this, if she had acted without telling him, If Serena had backstabbed him, he would make her pay the consequences.

"Where is Serena?"

Mahi stood straight as the man continued to scream in her face and sighed," Director Dawn. I’ve already mentioned that Miss Serena has not come in today, yet. And since she is not in the office, I do not have access to what she does in her personal time or where she goes. But I assure you I will contact you the moment she is in the office."

Matthew banged his hand on the table," I cannot wait until she returns whenever she wants to! I want answers right away! Call her now and tell her to come here right away!"

But Mahi simply shrugged and answered," She hasn’t been answering the calls, just like you saw. Director Dawn. Please. I can see that you’re worried but you really need to calm down. Creating a scene here, will not help you."

Before he could say anything more, the glass doors to the office swung open, and Serena strode in, her expression calm yet steely. Instantly, he moved towards her furiously and grabbed her arm, in a firm grip, "What the hell were you thinking, Serena—"

Her sharp gaze snapped to his, freezing him mid-sentence. She yanked her arm free with a swift motion, her voice low and laced with warning.

"Not here."

She didn’t wait for his response and instead brushed past him, motioning for him to follow her.

Once inside, she left the door ajar long enough to say, "Close it behind you," before taking a seat at her desk.

Matthew complied, shutting the door harder than necessary, then spun to face her.

"Well?" he demanded, his voice harsh. "Why the hell did you—"

"Sit," Serena interrupted, motioning to the chair opposite her.

Matthew hesitated but relented, his anger barely contained as he sank into the seat. Serena leaned back in her chair, her hands folded neatly on the desk as she fixed him with a pointed stare.

"I didn’t file the complaint," she said coolly. "I’ve spent my entire morning trying to figure out who did."

Her words stunned him into silence. He blinked, the gears in his mind struggling to process the revelation.

"You... didn’t?" he asked cautiously.

"No," she replied with gritted teeth. "This was not my doing. And before you go off blaming me for your uncle’s arrest, let me remind you of something. I need you to find the whereabouts of my brother. Of course I am not going to create obstacles in that. I don’t sabotage my own interests."

"Then who? Who would have the motive and the means to pull this off?"

Serena shook her head, "That’s what I’m trying to find out. But this isn’t the time for speculation. What matters now is damage control."

She leaned forward, "You need to go to the police station or the judges overseeing the case. Do whatever it takes to secure his release—or at least ensure he doesn’t start digging deeper into this. The last thing you want is for Governor Corrick to start doubting you. He must already be doubting me but if he connects us together, then it will be a problem. So, don’t waste your time here."
