Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 208: Unknown
Chapter 208: Unknown
"The last thing you want is for your Uncle Corrick to start doubting you."
Matthew’s face drained of color at the chilling implication. Corrick’s wrath wasn’t something anyone survived unscathed. If suspicion turned his way, there would be no escape, no mercy for him. All his thoughts of living a peaceful life would go to hell.. It was why Matthew had planned to leave the country when he agreed to help Serena—before the man even sniffed a hint of betrayal.
Serena’s voice turned icy as she glared at him. "I assume I don’t need to spell out what happens if he suspects your involvement?"
Matthew swallowed hard, shaking his head. His palms were damp, his fingers itching to fidget but restrained by fear. "Good you know," Serena said. She leaned back in her chair, directing a piercing gaze his way, "Then stop wasting time here and handle it."
Matthew shot to his feet, his jaw tightening. "Fine," he snapped, though his voice wavered with uncertainty. He took a step toward the door but turned back, his glare sharp despite his fear. "But if I find out you’re lying to me—"
"You won’t," Serena interrupted, her calm cutting through his anger like a knife. Her expression didn’t change as she ordered him to leave. "Now go."
For a moment, Matthew hovered, his fists clenching at his sides, but he didn’t dare challenge her further. With a sharp nod, he stormed out, the door slamming behind him. The sound echoed in the silence that followed, and Serena stayed still, listening until his hurried footsteps faded away.
Only then did she exhale, a deep breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Her fingers brushed the edge of her desk, trembling ever so slightly before she clenched them into a fist.
The situation was spiraling faster than she’d anticipated. Matthew was on edge, and while she’d sent him on his way for now, she couldn’t ignore the gnawing doubt creeping into her mind. Was this sudden development truly a coincidence? The police had suggested as much—that this was the work of an opposing party trying to sabotage Corrick ahead of the elections. But something about it didn’t add up. The timing was just odd.
Her phone buzzed, cutting through her thoughts. She grabbed it quickly, relief blooming as Aiden’s name flashed on the screen. She answered in an instant.
"Aiden," she said hurriedly,"Did you find anything?"
His familiar voice came through, steady and grounding, making her feel calm. "Not much, but I’ve been combing through the reports. There’s a problem, Serena."
Her heart sank. "What problem?"
Aiden sighed, "The evidence Matthew Dawn provided is not the same with what’s on the police records. Matthew’s reports are based on evidence gathered around the time the incidents took place which makes it more credible, but the evidence we have here... it’s all circumstantial. It looks like someone’s been digging up skeletons from Corrick’s past and create obstacles for him.."
Serena’s grip tightened on the phone. "You’re saying someone fabricated today’s scandal?"
"Not exactly," Aiden said, his tone measured. "The evidence itself isn’t fake—it’s real, but it’s circumstancial. Which is why Corrick has not been charged yet, simply taken in for investigation. The entire episode feels deliberate, though. Whoever’s behind this didn’t want to create something new or dig deeper; they wanted to weaponize Corrick’s history and get rid of him. And if we combine that with what Matthew gave you... we’re looking at a dead end for Corrick. This could be devastating."
Serena sighed. Even though she could hear the question in Aiden’s voice, she had no answer to it.
"Serena..."
Aiden had barely started to speak when she cut him off, "I don’t know, okay? I get it. I know this would be the perfect moment to strike against Corrick. The evidence I have could help the police close the case. They’d finally have enough to bring him down." She took a deep breath, her words tumbling out in a rush. "But what about my brother? Finding him would be more difficult. And I want Corrick to pay for the murder of my father too, not just the rest of his crimes. And right now, there’s nothing—not a shred of evidence—tying him to any murders. Without that, putting him behind bars feels incomplete."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. She could picture Aiden thinking it through, his silence heavy with unspoken thoughts. He didn’t need to say anything for her to know he didn’t agree. He’d already made his stance clear earlier: they should take down Corrick now, while they had the chance, and deal with her brother’s case later. At least now she knew her brother was alive—that was something.
"Even so, Aiden didn’t argue with her for which she was thankful. Instead, he changed the subject. "I’ve started looking into the email address your father might have used," he said. "He had two in his name. One was his personal account, and the other was tied to the MMA academy he was running."
"I already have access to the official one—the one connected to the academy. Once we hack into it, we should be able to trace his personal account from there. That’s where we’re most likely to find something useful."
She let out a slow breath, grateful for the shift in focus. "Do you really think his personal account could lead to anything concrete?" she asked, her voice quieter now.
"It’s possible and you know it. And those emails could also have evidence related to your father’s murder. But your grandmother... Edwina Dawn was declared dead of natural causes. Putting that suspicion on Corrick would be near impossible. Also, he was careful to poison her over a period of time so the doctor’s have reports of her deteriorating health."
Serena sighed. She knew that. It was why Sidney had refused to believe her as well. She’d always known that but how was she supposed to accept it? She could not let it go.
