Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 180: You Can’t Go
Chapter 180: You Can’t Go
Serena’s eyes narrowed, confusion and urgency evident in her expression. "What do you mean? I can’t go?" Her voice trembled as she tried to keep her composure, her fingers tightening around her phone that was still clutched in her hand
"Just that, Ma’am. You are not permitted to leave and see him." Assistant Mahi’s voice was steady, calm, as she took a step closer. She moved with quiet efficiency, closing the office door behind her and locking it securely with a decisive click. The sound echoed in the room, heightening Serena’s growing dread as she looked at it as if trying to find answers in that little thing.
"What is the meaning of this, Assistant Mahi?" Serena’s tone shifted from disbelief to simmering anger. Her eyes darted around the room as if searching for an explanation that made sense to everything.
Mahi’s face softened, but her resolve did not waver. "It’s for your safety, Ma’am. You cannot go to him."
Serena’s heart thudded painfully, a mixture of fear and frustration clawing at her chest, the voice of the person who had just called still echoing in her head. "What do you mean? Tell me clearly," she demanded again, taking a step toward Mahi. Every fiber of her being screamed to rush past the assistant, to ignore the suffocating walls of the office and find Aiden. The thought of him injured, alone, drove a spike of panic through her.
Mahi’s eyes met Serena’s, unyielding yet tinged with sympathy. "Simply put, you need to be moved to the safe house, immediately. As per CEO Hawk’s strict instructions, if he’s ever in danger or injured, your safety becomes the top priority. You are to be taken to a secure location under any and all circumstances."
Serena’s breath caught in her throat. The gravity of Mahi’s words wrapped around her like iron chains, immobilizing her. She struggled against the cold realization that this was planned, orchestrated—a contingency Aiden had set in place. He knew the risks, and he had thought far enough ahead to prepare for them. The thought sent a shiver down her spine, equal parts admiration and anger. Dam* that man for always thinking forward! She hated this about him.
Mahi’s hand hovered, cautious but ready, as she added, "Before we proceed, I need you to take a moment and steady yourself. I need to be sure that you’re composed before we leave this office. We don’t have time for panic, Ma’am. If anyone sees you worried then everything you’ve worked for will be for nothing. They will have found your weakness."
Serena’s chest rose and fell rapidly as she forced herself to breathe, to will away the tremor in her hands. Her mind raced, teetering between the urge to defy this imposed restraint and the deeper understanding that Mahi was just following orders. She swallowed, her throat tight as she finally looked back at Mahi with newfound clarity.
Serena’s jaw clenched, a hint of desperation flickering in her eyes as she looked at the woman and remembered the promise that Aiden had made. "But you are my
assistant. I am giving you a direct order—let me go to him."Mahi’s expression remained impassive, her professional mask firmly in place. "I’m sorry, Ma’am. Not this time. This is the only circumstance in which I am authorized to defy your orders. Actually, more than authorised, this is about a request from him. This was the only request he had of me when he transferred me here." She added softly as if she knew that it would not be easy for Serena to not go to him but she would make sure that it did not happen.
Serena’s voice cracked as frustration bubbled up. "Look! I have to go to him. He’s in the hospital, Mahi. He could be—"
"And he’s receiving the best possible care available," Mahi interrupted, her voice sharp enough to cut through Serena’s rising panic even a glimmer of understanding passing between them once again, before her gaze turned serious once more. "But you going there will only make things worse. Right now, we don’t know if what happened was an accident or a targeted attack."
Serena’s breath stilled, her pulse pounding in her ears as Mahi continued. "And if that attack has anything to do with you, then whoever is behind it may have already uncovered your connection to him, or worse, they’re fishing for a reaction, hoping to confirm it. We need to act as if they’re watching for that slip. If you charge out of here now, frantic and unguarded, you’ll give them exactly what they want."
The weight of Mahi’s words sank in, cold and undeniable. Serena pressed a hand to her chest as if trying to steady the storm inside her. Yes. It was entirely possible that Aiden had been targeted because of her. After all, he had been on the way back from Vancity. The place where she’d almost lost her life.
"The only way you can leave this office, Ma’am, is if you look composed and indifferent, as though nothing in the world has changed. Your strength is your shield, and any sign of weakness will undo everything you’ve worked for."
Serena’s eyes filled with unshed tears, but she blinked them away, straightening her spine and smoothing out the invisible creases on her dress. "You need to call them and find out, Mahi. Find some way to enquire and let me know that he is okay."
"He will be fine. His security team was not far behind and he was taken to the hospital immediately. And CEO Hawk is already on her way to the hospital. Soon, you will be able to have all the details without having to ask anyone."
"What do you mean?" Serena realized she almost sounded like a parrot with that repeated question but she didn’t know why she could only look on in confusion without catching onto anything so Mahi had to explain again," Once CEO Hawk reaches there, the PR Team at Hawk Industries will make an anouncement which will lead the journalists right there and then they will be acting as our eyes and ears."
