Chapter 179: Fight

"You really were right, Aiden hAWK. They’re already at each other’s throats according to my sources," Governor Corrick said, his voice filled with satisfaction. "How did you know it would happen so swiftly?"

Aiden’s expression was unreadable as he crossed his arms. "It wasn’t a guess, Governor. I’ve known Sidney long enough to understand his weakness—his emotions. When he lets them take control, his judgment gets clouded. And right now, he’s running on pure emotion, which makes him predictable. As for serena Dawn, she is in this for revenge, so of course she has no reason to trust Sidney anymore. But what I don’t understand is what all this does for you. What’s your endgame here?"

Governor Corrick’s smile tightened, but he said nothing, making Aiden continue to probe, "At first, I assumed you wanted Sidney out of the picture so he wouldn’t be able to support Serena Dawn. But that’s not quite it, is it? Especially when he’s now even more firmly aligned with your godson’s daughter."

Aiden’s eyes narrowed, studying the governor. "You’ve always harbored a deep hatred for Edwina Dawn and her children, yet in some twisted way, you end up helping them. Why? And more importantly, why hold onto this grudge just because a man cheated? Affairs aren’t exactly rare. Your brother-in-law wasn’t the first or last to stray. Sure, your sister must have felt betrayed, but she’s moved on, hasn’t she? She never even looked back or reached out to meet her children. So why this persistent vendetta?"

"Who told you my sister moved on?" Governor Corrick’s voice was thick with disdain as he leaned forward. "The only reason I’m helping Matt is because I want to rid myself of Edwina’s bloodline. I’d rather watch my useless nephews sit idly by than see Serena Dawn take control of anything. As for my sister... Well, don’t fool yourself. She didn’t ’move on.’ She was so utterly heartbroken that she couldn’t bear to live with it any longer. She died, Aiden. She took her own life. How could she possibly have reached out to her children from the grave? She didn’t even have the strength to stay alive for them. That’s the truth, and it’s a bitter one."

He paused, his eyes narrowing as the words weighed heavily in the air. "If they hadn’t taken the children from her, if they hadn’t stripped her of her last bit of dignity, maybe—just maybe—she might have had something left in her. But they didn’t. They robbed her of everything, Hawk. And that is what you’re failing to understand. I don’t even want to steal everything from them. Just what they owe me."

"Now, as for Serena being empowered? Maybe for a brief moment, she’ll have the illusion of control. But mark my words, she won’t hold onto it for long. With her company in our grasp, and the leverage I have over her, she’ll falter. She won’t be able to maintain her position, not when I’m pulling the strings from behind the scenes. No one, not even Serena Dawn, can stand against that kind of power for long."

"Like I said, vendettas I can understand. We’ll speak again, Governor. Goodbye for now."

Once Aiden had left the estate, he began the drive back toward the city, his mind churning with the conversation he’d just had. Today’s trip had been worth it as he’d unravelled something really important.

As he navigated through the winding road, his phone rang, breaking his thoughts. "Grandma," Aiden answered, his voice low with contemplation. "Yes, I just left. And you were right. There’s definitely something off about the whole situation. It’s strange, to say the least. He mentioned something about the family’s deep-rooted history. He talked about how their ancestors had migrated from the other side with nothing to their name and slowly built up everything they have now. He specifically brought up how they even bought the graveyards, saying they had brought back the ashes of their forefathers to bury there. It almost sounded like he was proud of it, but I noticed something.

"Nvidia’s grave was never there."

Aiden sighed, rubbing his forehead as the car sped through the quiet streets. "Nah. I’m sure. It is why I even went on that stupi* tour he wanted to take me on his estate."

"Yep. So your story might be a bit incredible. If the church would make such a fuss over someone killing themselves, then with the power the Corricks had already acquired should have been able to shut them down. And even if then it had been a problem, then bringing back her ashes like those of the ancestors should not have been a problem for them later on."

"But now, the question is, if she is alive, where is she? And how is Sidney’s dad involved in this?"

"I don’t know, grandmother. I do not want to involve you in this."

Finally, as Aiden disconnected the call, a voice note that had him wince came through," "You’re already involved, Aiden Hawk. And that involves me automatically! You’ve been circling around this issue far too deep to pretend you’re not tangled up in their mess now. And if you want to get to the bottom of this, you’re going to need help. You can’t do it alone. Now, you need to figure out why Sidney’s father is being kept out of the picture. That’s where things get tricky. And that is where I can come in and ask questions without raising red flags! So do not give me the speech about wanting me safe! I can take care of myself and have been doing just that long before you grew up! You understand, boy! Now! Come from there safe and sound!"

However, no one could have predicted that Mabel Hawk’s last words might just prove to be non-effective because the moment he’d placed his phone aside, a large truck came barrelling towards his car, hitting him off road effectively, without giving him a chance to recover.
