Chapter 163: Anger

Serena was hyper-aware of everything unfolding around her. The last attack with the bombs had been a close call, and this time, her assailants had dispensed with any pretense of subtlety. Whoever wanted her gone was growing desperate, their intentions no longer veiled as accidents.

But her mind was elsewhere. After being quickly shuffled into the car, she had been instructed to stay put and wait for the police to arrive and for the investigation to unfold. From her vantage point in the vehicle, she could see people trickling out of the venue one by one, faces a mix of shock and confusion. And despite the chaos of the scene, she found herself anxiously scanning each figure that exited the building, unable to resist searching for one person in particular: Aiden.

When the attack had erupted, he’d thrown himself over her, using his own body as a shield, pressing her to the ground without hesitation. Even now, as the adrenaline subsided and left her trembling, Serena could still feel the warmth of his arms around her, the steady weight of him that had been strangely reassuring in the midst of danger. Somehow, in those fleeting moments, he’d felt like her safest place, and she couldn’t shake the sensation. A part of her had wanted to thank him right then and there, and another part had even wished he could continue holding her. But Sidney had dragged her away before she could speak, and the interruption left her feeling resentful.

Now, her gaze sharpened as she spotted Aiden at last, emerging through the ballroom doors. She straightened instinctively, her heart catching in anticipation. She was ready to rush out, to express her gratitude and to stand close enough to feel his presence again. Yet, just as he reached the exit, she watched him pivot and disappear back into the hotel with the woman on his arm. And felt her heart break.

"I don’t know how you’re staying so calm after everything that just happened," Samantha said, her voice edged with disbelief as she glanced at him.

Aiden’s jaw tightened, his gaze fixed somewhere far beyond their immediate surroundings. "It has nothing to do with me, Sam," he replied evenly.

"Oh, sure," she replied, arching an eyebrow in challenge. "I might believe you if you didn’t look as tightly coiled as a spring. Come on, Aiden—you know I can find my way back to my room alone if you want to check on her for a few minutes. It’s not like I’ll get lost."

"There’s no need," he replied curtly. "I’ll see you to your room as planned. Otherwise, your husband will probably skin me alive for putting you at risk."

"Oh, I was never in any real danger. Relax," she said, waving a dismissive hand as if brushing off the incident. "And stop dodging the real reason you’re not going over there. You’d love nothing more than to pull her right out of that car and spirit her away to some fortified castle, admit it."

He muttered something under his breath, though the words were barely audible.

She rolled her eyes at him. "Typical. Of course, you’ll mumble to yourself when you don’t have a decent comeback."

This time, he didn’t bother to respond with words, just shot her a piercing glare before leaning over and ringing the doorbell of the suite. "Just do me a favor," he said in a low voice, "and tell your husband I’m leaving because his wife is far too talkative for my sanity."

With that, Aiden turned sharply on his heel and started down the hall, leaving behind a fuming Samantha, who crossed her arms and glared at his retreating back.

"Oh, you’re going to pay for that remark, Aiden," she muttered under her breath, a hint of humor mixed with indignation as she promised herself a fitting retribution for his final parting shot. And she already knew the perfect retribution. As soon as the door opened, she threw her arms around her husband," Hubby! Come on, I need your help! I want to meet a woman called Serena Dawn. Can you arrange it..." As expected, the answer was a resounding yes...

Serena kept her head turned away as the car continued to drive down the road. On the way here, she’d continued to look outside because she’d wanted to avoid talking to him and she was going to use the same tactic now.

Of course, he seemed to not be understanding that she did not want to talk to him because he kept talking about how this could not be a coincidence and how Matthew’s Godfather was the one who probably had a hand in it. However, Serena’s mind was elsewhere. Specifically, that Aiden was not going home but spending the night with that woman.

Her hands clenched, and a sharp feeling of regret passed through her. Not regret that she’d let him go. If anything, tonight was a good example of why it was for the best. The regret was of something sharper and lustier. If only they’d consummated their relationship and she’d known what it was like to have all of him...

Before she could say anything more, Sidney’s words distracted her and she turned to him," What did you say?"

Sidney shot her a look before continuing," I saw your uncle chatting with Aiden before we left. I think they’ve set up a meeting. I’ve already asked my contact to look into it."

"I didn’t know they were acquainted." She murmured, trying to suppress the fear coursing through her. She did not want Aiden to come onto their radar. And tonight he had come under their notice because he’d saved her.

Hurriedly, she whipped out her phone, ready to message Aiden to keep away from them and maintain his distance. Matthew Dawn was definitely not good news. Sidney, of course noticed her actions and caught her hand," What are you doing?"

"I am warning him to stay away from them." Serena said, trying to get her phone back.

"Don’t be a fool, Serena! Have you forgotten that Aiden is trying to take your company away from you! That he hates you? Do you think he will listen to you?"
