Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 162: Are You
Chapter 162: Are You
Before Aiden had a chance to ask Serena if she was alright, Sidney was already there, practically tearing her from his arms. He fussed over her, shielding her as if she couldn’t stand on her own, and guided her away. For a brief, tense moment, Serena’s gaze held Aiden’s, her expression unreadable before she finally looked away. The fact that she hadn’t shown the slightest concern for his own safety stung, but before Aiden could let the feeling settle, she jerked Sidney’s hand off with a firm shake of her wrist. Much to Aiden’s satisfaction, she took a determined step away from Sidney and headed for the exit on her own.
Aiden frowned, watching her leave, thoughts racing. The sniper—whoever had fired the shot—was likely still out there, lying in wait. It wasn’t—
Before he could follow her, however, guards suddenly flooded the place, a swarm of them moving quickly. Several reached Serena, surrounding her tightly and guiding her out. It dawned on Aiden in a flash—Sidney must have known this attack was coming! That son of a b**** had actually expected danger and still brought her here.
Without waiting for a moment, he marched towards the man," What the hell is going on?"
Sidney disconnected the call and having been assured that Serena was now sitting safely inside the bullet-proof car, he turned to Aiden and instead of answering him, gave him a small smile," Hawk. I should thank you for saving my Rena."
The smug smile on his face, made Aiden itch to give him a punch to the face while the words ’my Rena’ burned him. "I’d rather like an explanation instead of your fake thanks. You knew she was in danger of being attacked, didn’t you?"
Sidney’s face tightened and his posture stiffened. "I don’t know what you’re talking about," he replied curtly.
Aiden scoffed, "Come on. I’m not buying that."
Sidney let out a frustrated breath, his face tightening as a flicker of annoyance flashed in his eyes. "Look, Aiden," he said, voice clipped and defensive, "maybe you should focus on your own business."
"Oh, it is my business," Aiden shot back, eyes narrowing. "When the person I’m dancing with almost ends up shot, I think that makes it my concern."
Sidney’s expression hardened. "You don’t need to worry about her," he snapped. "She’s well-protected. The only reason that sniper got as close as they did was because you were dancing with her—right in front of a damn window! If she’d been with me, it wouldn’t have happened at all."
Aiden scoffed, a sarcastic smile tugging at his lips. "You’re a fool if you think the attacker wouldn’t have struck tonight regardless. What do you think happened? The people trying to harm her just happened to notice her dancing in the window and called up the sniper with, ’Oh, look! Perfect shot, go for it’? The sniper was already lying in wait, Price."
Sidney glared at him coldly. "And so were her guards," he bit back. "She’s protected and none of your concern, Hawk. Stay out of it." And with that, before Aiden could press further, Sidney turned his back and strode off, dismissing him completely.
Aiden clenched his fists, about to pursue and demand more answers, when he felt a hand settle on his shoulder. He turned, surprised, to find himself face-to-face with an older man whose expression was apparently supposed to be warm. Serena’s oldest uncle. While he had nothing against this man personally, knowing the past and what his family had done to Serena did not make him interested in talking to him. He narowed his eyes. What would this man have to do with him?
The man held out a hand undeterred by Aiden’s cold reaction. "Mr. Hawk, I presume?" he said in a calm, easy tone. "Matthew Dawn. Serena’s uncle. I wanted to personally thank you for what you did just now—your quick response made all the difference. Things could’ve ended much differently without your help, and for that, you have my gratitude." The man shuddered to indicate that he could not even have thought of the result.
Aiden held the man’s hand firmly, giving a polite but guarded nod. "Mr. Dawn," he replied, a faint, cool smile on his lips. "I would’ve thought you’d be more disappointed that I saved your niece."
Matthew’s expression flickered, a look of intrigue crossing his face before he chuckled lightly, as if amused by Aiden’s bluntness. "Ah, you’ve heard of the family business etc. But you are mistaken there," he replied with a glint in his eye. "I assure you, gratitude is indeed what I’m here to offer. Whatever our differences, they are within the family and I hope to resolve them as a matter of fact."
Aiden took a moment to obesrve the man’s reaction before shruggin as if it wasn’t a big deal, It was no trouble. Just did what anyone would do."
"All the more reason that we should be thankful for gallant people like you. It’s rare to see someone handle themselves so well in a situation like that. But I couldn’t help but notice," he continued, a hint of curiosity in his tone, "you and Sidney don’t seem to be on the best of terms."
Aiden raised an eyebrow, not answering the question as he wondered what the man could want. The hatred between him and Sidney was not what one would call public knowledge. All anyone woud think of was that they had a business rivalry. Thus, he did not feel the need to answer this question.
Matthew let out a sigh, glancing away thoughtfully, his gaze distant as if carefully choosing his words. "Don’t misunderstand, Mr. Hawk. While Sidney’s family and mine have been intertwined for years, he’s been more of a thorn in my side than anything else lately," he said, his tone dropping just a bit, as if to emphasize a weariness he was tired of concealing. "In fact, his... methods, if you will, don’t align with the family’s interests as much as they might appear. And to put it plainly, they’re beginning to interfere."
Aiden lips kicked up in a semblance of a smile," Is that so? Mr Dawn, I’d like to know more about your thoughts. For now, my partner for the evening is waiting for me. Why don’t we schedule a meeting..."
