FALLEN ANGEL: MARRIED TO THE DEMON KING
Chapter 88: THE ATTACK

Chapter 88: THE ATTACK

Before Young Lady Darvia could respond, a sharp piercing ring ripped through the sky, through the garden. The air around them seemed to completely shift, and the serenity of the palace was shattered as a wave of unrecognizable energy rolled down from the sky.

Wind whipped from the sky, pushing down to the ground, biting into Velmoria’s skin, pushing her hair and clothes in the process. Velmoria raised a hand, covering her eyes to protect them from the sudden onslaught of air, as she looked up at the sky. The birds that had been chirping fell silent, and the once gently breeze turned painfully cold.

Velmoria spun on her heels instinctively, her body tensing as her senses sharpened. She could sense a presence-- no multiple presences, from the garden.

Was it from the garden?

Velmoria lowered her body, and curved the fingers on both her hands. Almost immediately, a flame settled there, and her body calmed down slightly. She twisted her head around, searching for the source of the disturbance in the air. The flames in her hands flickered wildly as she took in the eerily quiet garden.

She took in deep breaths through her mouth, when the air shifted again, and a few figures fell from the clear sky. Velmoria stood in front of Young Lady Darvia and Lord Castiel, who had at some point removed his holy staff from somewhere.

Velmoria’s hands shook as she took in the figures that had suddenly appeared in the garden. They were human, at least from what Velmoria could see at face value. However, there was something wrong with them. Their auras were strange, flickering like magic, not like any magic she had ever seen before.

They were clad in mismatched armor, some made of strange metal plating, others in unfamiliar cloth and leather. Each of them held weapons of various kinds, some swords that shimmered with an unnatural flow, staffs covered with glowing blue runes and bows with blunt headed arrows.

The air around them pulsed them with an energy that made Velmoria feel sick to the stomach.

"Are those... humans?" Young Lady Darvia muttered as Castiel took a step forward to stand in front of her and Velmoria. His wings were slightly spread, casting a golden glow around them. He held his staff pointed to the humans in front of him.

Young Lady Darvia lowered her hands to the small dagger that had been strapped to the beck of her gown.

Castiel’s expression hardened, "They look human," his voice was low, fingers tightening against the staff. "But their energy is all wrong."

Unease coiled in Velmoria’s stomach. These intruders had no demonic energy, and no holy power flowing through them, yet their presence pulsed like magic, unfamiliar magic, but magic nonetheless.

One of them stepped forward, a man clad in a deep blue robe, his face partially obscured by a strange metallic mask. He raised a gloved hand, and symbols, glowing foreign letters, appeared mid-air in front of him.

He muttered some strange words, as the rest of his group scrambled to get their weapons out of their sheathes. He was very obviously the most experienced one in the group. The others spoke in a tongue that Velmoria did not recognize, and although she could not boast of knowing all the languages spoke in the three realms, the unfamiliarity of it made her sure that it did not belong in their realm.

The foreign letters grew larger, and Velmoria tensed.

Was it a spell?

No, the energy was different, it could not be something innate.

The man’s lips curled into a smirk, the only thing that they could see due to his mask, and he shouted a few more words before a ball of fire flew from the glowing letters.

Velmoria acted fast, pouring out her demonic energy into her palms, her fire growing larger, before she launched it at the enemy. Her fire and his fire met in the middle of the garden, sending a rippling explosion through the air. The deafening explosion that the flames collided with sent a wave of fire scorching the grass and shaking the stone beneath their feet. Velmoria narrowed her eyes against the heatwave.

Velmoria watched with narrowed eyes at the heatwave, but what she saw made her breath hitch. The fire from the robed man did not burn out. Instead it seemed to shatter into motes of blue and green light before fading into nothing. The strange symbols that floated in the air pulsed once, as if absorbing the lost energy.

That definitely was not normal.

A warrior in gleaming black armor lunged at her, his sword glowing with an eerie blue light. Velmoria was not in a good position to fight back, having not called out her weapon. She did not have to react as her waist was grabbed from the back as she was pulled back to a safer position. The sound of clanging blades was loud, and it was only then that Velmoria realized that she was in Young Lady Darvia’s arms.

The young demon had a serious look in her eyes as she grunted against the force of the weapon. The blue light of the sword let out a low hum, and a shockwave emanated from the point of contact of the two weapons, pushing Young Lady Darvia down. The demon stood her ground, causing the stone path to shatter beneath them.

Was that a weapon?

What kind of sword did that?

Velmoria pushed herself from Lady Darvia’s hands, leaving a small space between them where she called pushed out her demonic power, calling forth her weapon.

The whip was long, with a tip that matched her tip of her tail. The swoosh of the whip was loud as she wielded it to smack away the warrior in black armor who was giving young lady Darvia a hard time.

The whip lashed out, striking the armored warrior with a crack that echoed through the noisy garden. The impact sent a pulse of Velmoria’s demonic energy surging through the weapon, knocking him off balance and flying a few feet away. Although his feet skidded against the shattered stone path, he didn’t fall. Instead, the eerie blue glow of his sword flickered as he raised his sword and glowing symbols materialized in the air above him.

Velmoria felt her stomach twist at seeing the unfamiliar words and she stopped in her tracks. The attack from her whips also ceased her attacks.

"Velmoria!" Castiel’s voice rang out as a pulse of holy energy erupted from his staff, hitting the silver masked man who had thrown a ball of fire at them. "Are you alright? I need you to focus on not getting hurt!" He called out as a golden shield materialized before her for a few seconds, protecting her from an attack from the masked man.

Velmoria shook her head, refusing to be distracted. "Sorry, I am alright." She gripped her whip tighter, glancing at Young Lady Darvia who was fighting off two people at the same time. Velmoria waved her whip, and lashed it forward, the tip igniting with dark flames as it struck one of Darvia’s opponents across the chest. The attacker stumbled back, the force of the hit pushing him several feet away, but Velmoria’s eyes locked onto the strange glowing symbols hovering over him.

Just when Velmoria was internally rejoicing that small victory, a surge of blue light exploded around her eyes. Velmoria was too late to throw up a shield of flames to protect herself. She could hear someone call her name, two voices. The energy in the spell did not behave the way normal magic did.

The blue energy passed through a measly shield that Castiel had erected, striking Velmoria squarly in the chest. A searing pain shot through her, unlike anything she had ever felt before. Almost immediately, she felt the foreign energy mix with her own, straight from her bloodstream all the way to the tips of her bones. She could feel it seep through her nerves, and a strange feeling washed through her.

It was as if something was actively calculating the damage being inflicted upon her.

Above her head, more glowing letters appeared, leaving a light hum in their wake. Velmoria raised her head, looking up at the glowing letters.

The letters shifted and turned above her, like gold that was melting into itself. Then, it finally became words that Velmoria could read.
