Chapter 99: Promise To Protect
Viviana closed her eyes as the warmth around her left her. She could breathe fresh air as Leander took a step back.
"Go..." Leander’s deep voice sounded tired. "He’ll be waiting..."
Viviana was scared to open her eyes. She didn’t know if he was still mad. But more than being mad, she thought he sounded sad. It made her heart squeeze in pain. She thought maybe he feels excluded. She understood because she used to feel the same.
And she had another ulterior motive. The same motive that made her wait when she was standing on the ledge, and the same motive that made her surrender to him on their first night.
She wanted to see if he remembered her.
When that thought arouses in her mind, that thought ruled her entirety. Everything would get forgotten, including who he is and what his family did to her. All that would be left was her desire to be acknowledged by him.
Why? Why was that desire so great that overcomes her vengeance each time?
She didn’t care to think about it. Maybe that’s how fate works—mysteriously.
"Join me," she took a step forward. "I want you to hear my story."
Leander’s eyebrows twitched looking into her misty dark eyes. Like nothing happened, as if she didn’t ask him to kill her, again, she is smiling.
What is the meaning behind this smile?
Leander pressed his lips and turned to leave. He did not want to play her games.
"Kastello," she grabbed his hand.
Leander gritted his teeth and got out of her hold.
That day, she managed to make him agree to her egregious request just by holding his hand and cutely blinking her misty eyes. She will not succeed using the same trick today.
He will show her his strength!
Ten minutes later...
Viviana smiled looking around the big room. She didn’t know there was a big room with an attached balcony in the second floor. Rather than a room, it was more like a library/office.
She took a quick glance at the collection of books. There were a lot of books from different genres from fiction to non-fiction, self-help, business, accounts, science, and even medical books.
She turned to look at the stoic man sitting beside her. He was casually placing his hand on the backrest of the loveseat they were sitting. She could smell his after shave still and his big hand was hanging closer to her shoulder. She felt enveloped by him.
He refused to join her for some time, but when she told him that she wanted him with her, he decided to join without saying one more word. He is kind of like a stubborn puppy at times.
So adorable.
"Do you read all these books?" she asked.
"No, I just keep them there to look smart," Leander answered without even looking at her.
"Oh, smart move. Most ladies like them a smart man," Viviana said not minding his pout.
He might say that he is not that smart. But she knew he is smart.
Leander glared at her. Not only did she bring him here against his wishes, but she dared to anger him. This woman has the nerves to accuse him of bringing women to his study to seduce them. How could she shamelessly accuse him like that?
Viviana bit her lips. She didn’t know how she offended him. "Oh, sorry," she scratched the back of her head as it hit her. "I know you would have brought them straight to the bedroom. They would have flocked to you nonetheless because of your looks and money..."
He has a thick shaft too. That would make women go giddy for him.
"Who’d care about intelligence when..." she stopped talking as the intensity of his glare increased.
She thought he would be pacified as she corrected her mistake, but Leander only got madder.
Viviana bowed her head not knowing how to pacify him.
Lionel who was sitting opposite to them burst into laughter.
"Don’t mind him," he chuckled "Leander is very smart. He does not like sitting at a place, but he loves learning about everything."
"Oh?" Viviana raised her brows with a smile.
Leander still was glaring at Viviana. He was not mad at her though. He was mad at himself more. Look at her smile... Stupid!
When he heard of the story of Helen of Troy, he laughed. No matter how beautiful a woman was, he couldn’t accept that so many men flocked to her and even made deals among themselves. And these men are not those who had nothing else to do. They were kings, warriors and demigods. He couldn’t believe how a self-respecting man would throw out everything just for a woman. He considered them pathetic.
And here he is...
That too for a woman who hates him to her bones.
Who is more pathetic?
"Ah, Leo," Lionel slapped the coffee table. "I wanted to ask you this. Your wife... she’s an amazing story teller. She told me about these two girls, older and younger..."
Lionel went on to give a brief outline of the story. He also talked about the secret cave. Viviana observed Leander. He had not much change in his expression. With his collar buttons popped open, he looked more relaxed and casual.
"What do you think the older girl prayed or promised before placing the stone? The vow... what could it be?" Lionel asked.
Viviana blinked her eyes. She didn’t know why Lionel is asking Leander that question. But she wanted to know what Leander thinks about it.
Leander wetted his lips and rubbed her back. "Is this your story?" he asked.
Viviana’s heart skipped a beat. "No, why do you think so?" she refused immediately.
Leander stared at her for some time without saying anything. Lionel observed the both of them with a smirk. At times those two forget that he is still here. But this too is good. And she is a pretty convincing liar. She couldn’t hide her tale from him because he is smart.
Well, he is smarter than Leander in issues regarding emotions and people. Leander is better at other things, like breaking bones and torture.
Leander turned at Lionel. "I think she would have vowed to protect her forever. Or if she asked for a wish, she would have asked to be with her friend forever," he said.
Viviana looked at him without blinking. Knowing Leona firsthand, she would say that Leona might have made such a wish. Leander hit the nail on the head with this.
"How are you sure?" Lionel asked.
"It’s obvious," Leander shrugged. "Based on the conversation they had before, she would have wanted to protect that stupid girl."
He was sure because he is thinking the same too! It’s pathetic but he could relate to that older girl.
"Hey! Who is stupid?" Viviana asked.
"You too are stupid," Leander snorted.
Viviana pouted.
"So, shall we continue, Bellissima?" Lionel brought them back to the topic.
He was not in the mood to enjoy their playful; fights any longer.
