Chapter 100: The Unwelcome Visitors
Chapter 100: The Unwelcome Visitors
"Yes!" Viviana rubbed her hands. "Before I start..."
Viviana explained the names to Leander. For some reason Lionel didn’t mention the names of everyone. Maybe Leander is not the guy to care for details, but he needs to know the details if he wants to understand the story.
When she told him Leona’s name, she saw his pupils dilating. She didn’t know what emotions made him act that way. But she quickly glossed over that and introduced the Corleone family.
Leander rolled his eyes. He already knew where her story would go. For her, those who call themselves are evil incarnate in this world. They will only do bad things and somehow everything that went wrong in her life is their fault.
But he wanted to have a listen.
She is not wrong to think of people of his ilk to be wicked. They are. Just that, they don’t hide behind the mask of being humble and sympathetic. They just live life as who they are.
"Darcia closed the curtains not wanting to speak to Leona anymore. But she did not leave the window. The sky was getting dark and Darcia waited to see if Leona returns to her home. Otherwise, her mother will ground her again. But Leona didn’t move an inch for a long time. She~"
Viviana paused to Leander’s scoff. She looked at him and he turned away, still with that unimpressed look. Viviana sighed and continued on with her story as she knew he is not going to tell her why he scoffed.
Leander couldn’t help but feel pity for Leona. Guess, younger girls are stupid. Age is proportional to intelligence and maturity. The younger they are the more immature they will act.
Seriously, why should that Leona girl embarrass herself like this? She should have found something better to do—like watching paint dry.
He did find that name odd. She called the name "Leo" at times. He thought that she was talking to him. But what is Leo is some other person? This story might be a real story. He just hoped that this Leona didn’t die in the hands of the "Corleone" mafia family.
"Leona sent a letter for Darcia. Darcia opened the letter with great curiosity. There were only a few words written on the letter. "Come talk to me stupid girl". Darcia got madder and she didn’t want to talk to Leona anymore. How come she is the stupid one? Just because of that snobby boy, Leona is calling her stupid. She did not go out to meet her."
Leander rolled his eyes. "She indeed is stupid!"
Obviously, Leona wanted to spend time with Darcia or had something important to say to her. But the stupid girl didn’t even let her. How could such stupid people exist in this world? They are so stupid one day they will forget to breathe.
Viviana ignored Leander. He was not in a bad mood for some reason and so she tried her best not to provoke him.
"Leona waited for Darcia and left only when the sky turned dark. That night, Darcia was not able to sleep and so she wandered around hiding from the nuns. She saw Father Patrick’s door was open and she decided to talk to him for some time. But when she got closer, she realized that Father Patrick had company."
Viviana wetted her throat with some water. She still finds herself shivering thinking about that night. Leander noticed her face getting pale and cupped his hand over her shoulders.
"There were three men—well, two men and an older boy inside the room. An old man—the boss of the Corleone family, a middle-aged man who is the advisor of the boss and the eldest son of the don---Enzo Corleone. Of course, Darcia got curious and listened in the conversation. They were loud and..."
"Were they threatening the Priest?" Lionel asked as he could see that she was struggling to talk about it. This seemed to be the most crucial part of the story.
Somehow, he was happy that the other man with Evander was not his father, but Barnabas.
Of course, nothing is set in stone, and he might be thinking wrong from the get-go, but he had a feeling that this is a true story. His gut instinct told him so. He hoped Leander does not figure out that she is talking about his family. That won’t go well. It would be better if he maintains his obliviousness.
"She couldn’t hear much and understood very little from their conversation, but she saw that Father Patrick was refusing money from those well-dressed men. Darcia found that to be not fair. Father Patrick told her that she can get a separated room once they got money. Her little heart broke down as she thought that Father Patrick does not want to give her a separate room."
Leander opened his mouth to say something, but Lionel glared him to silence. Viviana liked this little interaction between friends. And she also found that Leander is not too much of a stubborn man. He can be convinced when used the proper methods.
"Darcia noticed Enzo leaving the room. She ran out of the room and got inside the next room and closed the door. It was an old building and most locks on doors doesn’t work properly. That room’s door was not locking. Darcia looked at Beth sleeping on the bed. She decided to leave after some time. She moved Beth’s crutches to the side and waited by the door for the right time to leave. She didn’t want to get caught by the nuns in someone else’s room.
Beth was 14 and was affected by polio because her parents neglected her and skipped vaccines for her. She could walk when she was very young and the moment she was diagnosed with polio, her parents left her in the orphanage. Darcia didn’t interact with her much because she was very old, but she knew that Beth was one of the good ones," Viviana took in a deep breath.
Lionel could sense something very terrible coming. Leander was still staring at her with a smile raring to be let out hanging by the corner of his lips.
"Just as Darcia was about to leave after some time, she heard Father Patrick leading the older man through the hallways. She waited for some more time and saw shadows standing by the door. Her heart skipped a beat, and her first instinct was to hide under the bed when she heard the door open. In entered..."
Viviana took in a deep breath. Her head felt heavy, and her nose itched. She knew she was not catching a cold. But to think of talking about that incident made cold sweat wet her back.
Leander did not fail to notice that. He knew that she is going to talk about something terrible. He rubbed her back. It was an instinct for him to assure her.
Did he really want to hear what she had to say? No. But he did not like to see her stressed.
"Two men entered. Well, not two men. One man and the big boy, Enzo... What followed... Beth woke up hearing the sneers of the men. Darcia didn’t understand much but she did not like it. After that, the bed sank... Viviana had to lie flat on the floor. Beth screamed but then her screams were muffled..." Viviana’s heart pounded so much, and her eyes stung.
She clapped with the back of her hands trying to imitate the sound she heard that night. She still couldn’t forget the painful moans of Elisa. She couldn’t shout loud, but she tried.
"The older man encouraged Enzo to do "it" and Enzo did it sneering at Beth, not minding her cries and painful moans. All Darcia heard was this sound...she understood nothing else other than that boy was hurting Beth..."
Viviana continued clapping with the back of her hand not bothering to look at the expressions of the men. They might never understand what it was like for Elisa. She doesn’t either. She could only imagine.
"Beth tried her best... Her legs were useless, and her petite arms were no match for a seventeen-year-old wealthy pig. Then... SNAP. Something snapped and Beth screamed. But no one heard her, no one rescued her; not God, not anyone. Darcia was the only one who could have offered help, but she was frozen with fear, trapped under the bed."
Viviana took a deep breath.
"After Enzo, it was the other man," she wetted her lips. "By now, Beth’s torso was thrown down the bed and her head hit the floor. Darcia’s eyes met with Beth’s."
Viviana’s voice shook. There was pin-drop silence in the room, and no one was saying anything. Everyone had a reason. Lionel wanted to know more. Leander had a feeling that this might have been something she actually witnessed.
It’s the past. Nothing can change that—Leander soothed his heart with those empty words.
"Darcia saw the light leaving Beth’s eyes. But the men—the pigs—were still squealing... that sound..." Viviana clapped the back of her hands. "...didn’t stop..."
"That’s it!" Lionel stood up. "I can’t take any more of it!"
