Chapter 79: Gaze of Love
Chapter 79: Gaze of Love
Leander couldn’t stop thinking about Lionel’s outburst on his way back. It was already dark, and he wanted to go home for dinner. He forgot about every other woman Lionel mentioned but he only remembered what he said about Viviana.
Is her life in danger?
"Steve, if a woman tells you that she cannot carry a child, what does that mean?" he asked.
Whenever he repeated it, that woman got sad. So, is it a sad thing or was she overreacting as usual?
Steve gulped as he didn’t know how to break it to Leander. He married her knowing she can’t carry a child and after mocking her for it. And now he is asking this weird question. At times, he does not understand Leander at all.
"It could have a literal meaning. Some people don’t know how to carry a baby. But usually..." Steve hesitated.
"What?" Leander urged Steve to speak up.
"It might mean that she is infertile—unable to carry a child in her womb," Steve gave the explanation.
Steve kept himself from looking at Leander. He still couldn’t understand the reason Leander asked this.
Leander went dead silent.
Infertile?
If that was the case, then Lionel’s question made more sense. If she is infertile, then his grandfather wouldn’t be very pleased with her. The entire premise behind his blessings to their marriage was that he wanted an heir.
If she cannot give an heir to the Kastello family, then...
He still cannot understand what he was thinking when he signed his name on the record book. He knew how much she hated his family. And now this!
Leander pressed his lips. Nothing is sure yet. He asked Nathaniel to come to the Orchid Gardens. He took an MRI of her whole body and took a lot of tests. He would know if she is infertile or not, for sure.
Nathaniel didn’t mention it to him, so Leander leaned toward the option that she is not infertile. He hoped that were the case.
But what if...
Clearing his throat, Leander focused his mind. He’ll deal with it when it comes to it.
-----
Viviana asked Katerina for the necessities as her periods had started. She didn’t know if it was the medications that she took recently, but her periods arrived earlier. Usually, she will have to suffer with the back pain for a couple days before her periods arrives.
Katerina gave an understanding nod seeing the list of painkillers she had written.
Viviana didn’t know if she’d be provided with everything, but she couldn’t even sit on the bed. She curled herself into a ball and covered herself with the duvet as she was cold.
She didn’t like the position. She missed the hug pillow she had at home. She also had a heating pad at home that would be very helpful with her severe cramps. She asked for it in the list, but she didn’t think Leander will approve of it.
Wouldn’t he be delighted to see her writhing in pain after what she did to his brother?
She clenched her teeth and grunted in pain. The first few days are always worse. And the next few days she’d be dizzy because of all the blood she lost. It takes her at least ten days to function properly. She used to take a leave of absence for three days as she won’t be able to move.
She got Leander’s pillow and hugged it. It had remnants of his scent. His hair had a distinct scent from his body, she found. Even in that excruciating pain, when she inhaled his scent, her lips curved into a smile.
The cramps eased a bit and she got dizzy. It would be better if she could sleep through this. But she knew it was high hopes for her considering the condition of her body.
She heard the door click open and she rolled to see if it was Katerina. If she brought the pain pills, that would be better. She can take them and try to fall asleep.
It was Leander.
"You’re sleeping already?" he asked and turned up the brightness of the lights. "Did you eat?"
With a disgruntled moan, she covered her face with her hands.
"Are you not feeling well?" he asked immediately dimming the lights.
"Uh!" she groaned as an answer and turned to show her back to him. Hugging his pillow, she slipped inside the duvet.
She groaned as the bed sank beside her. Leander pulled the duvet down. "Are you having a fever?" he asked.
She was going to answer but her cramps started making her eyes droop and she couldn’t even find the energy to speak. Hugging the pillow, she moaned in the pillow.
"Mousy!" he patted her head gently. His hand was cold and wet that her hair stuck to his hand. "Tell me what’s wrong." His voice was shaking.
"Periods," she said, not wanting to make him wonder for long. She did not like to hear the pain in his voice.
"Does it hurt very much?" he rubbed her back.
"Mmm..." she nodded.
When his big hand reached the small of her back along the spine, she felt so better.
"Leave your hand there," she said.
"Okay," he spread his big hand at her back.
Like the warm wings of an angel, his hand covered her back, spreading his warmth to her. As if his hand had a healing touch, her pain decreased considerably. She breathed regularly.
She thought he would take his hand away after a while, but he stayed there.
She opened her eyes and took a peek. He looked uncomfortable as he leaned on her to reach her back. His eyes were filled with concern.
It’s been a while since someone looked at me like that...
Viviana’s heart skipped a beat.
Why is he looking at me like that? Why does he look sad as if he couldn’t bear to see me in pain?
She covered his eyes with her hands. She was afraid of his eyes. Every time she looks into his eyes, she feels like she belongs with him. And each time, like clockwork, she does something she wouldn’t do if she’s of sound mind.
"What? Does it hurt? What do you want?" he asked in quick succession gripping her wrist so gently. As his thin lips moved, she found her heart melting inside her chest cavity.
"Don’t look at me like that," she said. Her throat hurt as she swallowed her emotions.
Don’t look at me as if you love me.
