Chapter 78: See The Truth
"Slow down," Lionel asked Leander who was swallowing shots of absinthe as if it was water.
Leander threw the glass on the floor. Maybe he was tipsy, the glass rolled having escaped the fate of broken to shills.
"What hurt you, darling?" Lionel scooted closer to Leander and tried to hug him. But Leander pushed him away.
"Stay away," he leaned on the backrest of the couch and closed his eyes.
But then he opened his eyes and leaned toward Lionel making him retreat. "Whoa! Easy there, buddy. I don’t like kissing you when we are alone," he laughed.
"You!" Leander grabbed his collar.
The laptop was open on the worktable. Lionel must be working on his next project. He doesn’t like to stay in his house when he’s back in town.
"What? Want advice for wife troubles?" Lionel raised his brows.
Leander’s hold on Lionel’s collar loosened. Lionel scooted backward. Leander will not hurt him. He knows. But he couldn’t help but act like the macho fool he is.
"What do you want to know? Flowers, jewelry...," Lionel stopped seeing Leander not interested in listening. "I can’t imagine you being lovey-dovey with someone. You should have stayed single for life," he scoffed. "Why marry and struggle? You should have left the poor woman on her own..."
Lionel poured him a shot and gulped it. His face twitched as his throat burned. He couldn’t forget the smile on her face.
Leander glared at Lionel, but when he saw the odd expression on Lionel’s face, he was a little concerned. Why should he worry for his mouse?
"What did she tell you?" Leander asked. His chest burned not because of the alcohol but because of jealousy as he remembered how happily she chatted with Lionel.
"Who?" Lionel controlled his smirk.
He imagined Leander to be this fool who gets jealous even at his friend when he falls in love, and he proved him right.
"Helena?" Lionel continued to provoke Leander further. A man should have fun when he is with his friends, right? How can he keep himself from having fun? Poking Leander is fun for him.
"She’s pregnant and she told me that she’s afraid if she’d have a daughter for the third time... She wanted to talk to you about that," Lionel rubbed his knees seeing Leander’s face stiffening.
Oh, he does not want to hear about Helena. That’s a good start. He never should have involved himself with that snake.
Leander looked away. He didn’t know how her pregnancy is of his concern. But his lips curved to a smile.
Mousy was right!
Lionel wondered what made Leander smile out of nowhere. It tickled his curious bone.
"What’s that smile about? Are you going to become a father?" Lionel poked his arm. "I hear she was with you for more than a month. Is that why you did the switch?"
He guessed Leander won’t give her up seeing how calm he was. But it was entertaining to watch everyone’s expression when he signed his name on the record book.
Peter’s expression was magnificent!
"She’s not. Don’t go spreading rumors," Leander corrected Lionel. He didn’t want others to talk bad about Evander for wanting to marry a woman who was pregnant with his brother’s child.
"But she might be," he winked at Lionel.
"So, it went well last night, huh?" Lionel took another shot.
Guess he is drunk! Otherwise, he wouldn’t have slipped this intimate detail out.
Leander didn’t listen to Lionel. He was thinking of Viviana. He couldn’t contain his grin. "She told me she cannot carry a child. I want to see how she does it when she has our child."
"What?" Lionel was shocked. "She cannot carry a child?"
"I know right?" Leander laughed patting Lionel’s hand. "How hard can it be?"
"No, Leander, fool!" Lionel slapped his hand. This fool never had any real discussions with any woman. He probably doesn’t understand what that phrase means. "Did she tell you that she cannot carry a child? Do you know what that means?"
"What?" Leander laughed. "Why arrre you gettin’ anxious?" His speech started to slur.
"You f*cking drunk!" Lionel slapped his cheek for him to gather himself. "Snap out of it! Tell me what she told you! Is her life in danger?"
"Stop it!" Leander pushed Lionel away. He rubbed his face to gather himself. "What is the matter with you? I shouldn’t have come to meet you..."
Lionel tried to stand up, but he staggered.
Lionel clicked his tongue. Fool! How can he be this careless when her life might be in danger? If she is infertile, Peter will kill her! Does he not know that?
Whatever! Why should I care about his wife?
Lionel decided to let it go. But his heart couldn’t be at peace. Her face and her smile kept on popping in his mind. He poured another shot and gulped it all.
It’s not good! I should stop thinking about her! Leander would know better about her!
"Brie is trying to leave the Venus Point," Lionel quickly changed the topic.
"Trying?" Leander stopped trying to get up and looked at Lionel.
Lionel sighed seeing Leander’s eyes clearing up.
"She never should have signed herself to that vampire," Leander scoffed. But his eyes were curious as he wanted more details.
Lionel was not going to give him any more answers. "She misses you. Just visit her once. She feels so alone..."
Leander shook his head. "She didn’t trust me then. Why should I..." he sighed rubbing his forehead. His voice softened. "Is she sick or something?" he asked.
"Do you remember the watch she gave us? I got the imitation, and you got the original... You threw it back at her face because you were mad at her but picked it up after she left..." Lionel sighed.
Leander scratched his chest. He threw that watch in the trash today.
"You visit her often?" Leander asked.
Lionel had a crush on her in the past. But she...
Lionel shrugged. "She expects you though..."
Leander poured a glass for Lionel. He drank with him in silence for some time.
"What can I do? I don’t have any say in how they run Venus Point," Leander said. "I can pay for~"
"Get the f*ck out!" Lionel pushed the bottles on the table down.
Leander stood up. He wouldn’t want to be around Lionel when he is self-loathing and angry. And it’s a delicate subject. He wouldn’t want to lose his friendship over this.
"You’re such a fool!" Lionel grabbed Lionel’s collar. His eyes were red and filled with rage. "Look around you, fool! See! Observe! Your foolishness does not absolve you from your ignorant bliss! Do you even know what your family does for a living? Fool! Go, lick Peter’s boots, flatulate your wh*re of a brother, and give up your life protecting them! Fool! Fool!"
Leander pushed Lionel onto the sofa. There is a limit.
After asking Lionel’s assistant to take care of him, Leander left the hotel room.
Lionel never gets this enraged. What’s gotten to him today?
