Chapter 61: Consummation
Chapter 61: Consummation
"What were you thinking? You didn’t go this hard for Helena even," Lionel asked Leander.
Leander never goes against the mandate of Peter Kastello. For the first time in his life, Leander openly went against his grandfather.
Leander stayed silent.
Why?
He didn’t know why. When his grandfather told him that Evander wants to step down after marrying that mouse in his room, he did not like that at all. Evander hurrying for marriage was so unbelievable.
But when his grandfather pleaded with him, he agreed. He cannot hurt his grandfather.
When he went to get the record book, all he could think about was the kitchen maid he saw in Evander’s room that day... The little mouse in his room will end up the same way too.
That mouse does not deserve to be torn to pieces by a rabid dog like Evander...
But he still worried for his grandfather. He hardened his heart and threatened her to listen to what his grandfather says.
And then he saw her eyes. Those eyes were so unfocused and disturbed. His heart clenched. It was worse than when she looks at him with hatred. That’s when he decided.
That mouse can live with him in his room forever. In fact, she should be with him.
He also thought that by marrying her, he will fall from the good graces of his grandfather and so he will avoid becoming the next don. He was even willing to give up his every inheritance and only serve as a street boss of the Kastello family.
Sadly, his wish didn’t come true.
He had an uneasy feeling in his heart. His grandfather acts as if nothing went wrong. But he knew his grandfather took offense to what he did.
He did a stupid thing.
Ah, what have I done! I married the woman who wants the destruction of my family!
Reality hit him only then.
"For not taking after your grandfather?" Lionel asked and Leander looked at him and sighed.
"How did you even think that your grandfather will let you be the street boss when Evander lost his..." Lionel cleared his throat and pointed at his crotch discretely. "You know what..."
Leander scoffed. "Where did you hear that? It’s a rumor," he went along with his family’s story.
He knew how Lionel works. He would gather information by speaking as if he knows that information already.
Lionel scoffed. "I am pretty sure that your brother lost his ability to give sire a child," he said.
"What nonsense," Leander was disappointed in Lionel. "Since when did you start believing rumors?"
Lionel rubbed his temples. It seems like Leander does not know the truth. "Open your eyes, buddy," he flicked his forehead.
Leander glared at Lionel.
"Oh, look there," Lionel pointed at Viola.
Leander dashed toward Viviana like an arrow shot out of a bow. He did not like that his mother is shouting at her.
"If you want to know something, ask me," he said.
"Are you happy?" Viola shouted at Leander.
Like an obedient puppy, Viviana hid behind Leander. She didn’t want to deal with Viola. She let Leander deal with his mother.
All she wanted was to get out of there.
"You stole everything from your brother! How can you even live like this?" Viola asked.
Leander felt her warmth on his back. Although she was not touching him, she was standing so close to him as if she expected him to protect her.
And along with his protective instinct, his emotions that he kept hidden from his mother till then got unlocked too.
"Can’t I be happy, mom? And can’t you be happy for me for once in my life? You saw what happened here. Grandpa made the decision. And...Hand to heart, tell me. Was I the one who tried to steal? Aren’t I your son too? Why is it that hard for you to be happy for me?" he asked.
He was not shouting, but his voice shook as he spoke from his heart.
Viviana looked at the tall back in front of her that was drooped. He must be in so much pain. She raised her hand and almost patted his back.
Almost.
Lionel pressed his lips and observed Leander voicing out the issue that has hurt him for all his life. He noticed Vivian’s hand that was ready to comfort Leander and yet for some reason, she was hesitating. Viola looked stunned as Leander talked back to her.
Leander held Viviana’s hand and decided to leave. But he was blocked by Peter.
"Go straight to the Rose Gardens," Peter said.
Leander tried to speak.
"Rose Gardens," Peter repeated.
-----
Viviana clutched her shirt and twisted it sitting on the bed. The bed was a lot smaller than the bed in Leander’s bedroom. She was currently in Leander’s bedroom in Rose Gardens. The setting in this Tuscan-style home was entirely different from Leander’s bedroom too.
She didn’t know why Leander brought her here. He left her in his room and asked her to lock it. But the servants of the house entered the room forcefully and helped her with her bath. Leander stepped out after his shower. He returned after half an hour and had a fresh bruise on his lips.
She offered to treat him and maybe ask him why they are there. But ever since he returned, he was leaning on the door and was staring the floor without saying a word.
She had forgotten the most important thing in all the commotions—she was married.
"Can I sleep?" she asked.
If he is not going to talk to her, she decided to start a conversation.
Leander’s dark brown eyes which were deep as if they hold the secrets of the universe ended on her.
"My grandfather hit me," he said pointing at the bruise on his lips.
"Should I apply medicine?" Viviana asked gingerly.
"No need," Leander shrugged it off.
"Okay," Viviana nodded and continued to stare at her hand on the lap.
"Thank you," she said breaking the silence. "For..." she patted her neck.
Leander stared at her as if she was asking him to lend his nose for a day. Viviana bowed her head. She didn’t know why she felt the need to thank this guy. And it seemed like he didn’t want to hear her gratefulness.
But he did help her when Evander tried to humiliate her.
The room was silent except for the running air conditioner. The silence was oddly familiar. Since Leander was not saying anything, she decided to sleep and pulled the duvet.
She knew she won’t be able to sleep in the lair of the Kastello family, but she didn’t want to continue with this awkward situation.
"My mother talked to me," he said.
"Oh?" Viviana looked up.
Dropping the duvet, she observed Leander. He was acting weird, she thought. He never talked to her about stuff and his demeanor was squirmy as if he was hiding something.
"What did she say?" she asked.
"Con..." Leander said and bowed his head as he mumbled the rest of the word.
Viviana blinked her eyes. "Candy?" she asked.
"Consummation," he said. "Of our marriage."
