Chapter 35: Feeling Helpless
Chapter 35: Feeling Helpless
Viviana tried to stay still. She could hear someone opening the walk-in closet. Katerina was the only one who would enter the room and even she won’t open the closet.
If so...
Viviana rolled her eyes to see Nadia walking into the closet as if it was her own. She’s at that age when nothing scares her. Viviana let that kid do what she wanted to do.
"Your clothes are all in here! Ah! That’s a lot of clothes!" Nadia shouted from inside the closet.
Viviana didn’t answer her.
"Whoa! This is the latest design from...this belt... these shoes..." Nadia went on to name the brands of the clothes. Her voice trembled out of anger as she talked about the clothes.
Viviana closed her eyes. It had nothing to do with her. That kid can burn those clothes for all she cared. It’s all her fiancé’s money.
"How can you shamelessly ask Leander to spend that much on you?" Nadia walked toward her with her heels clicking. She sounded angry and hurt.
Viviana only then realized that something was weird. That kid is Leander’s fiancé which is odd in itself. But why does it appear that the kid thinks that she is Leander’s mistress in this situation?
Aren’t I the prisoner?
"Katerina!" Viviana called for her.
Katerina was standing by the door, and she entered the room immediately. She looked anxious as if she was not happy with the presence of Nadia in the room.
"Who am I, Katerina?" Viviana asked her. She was under the impression that everyone knows her as Leander’s prisoner. But is it truly the case?
"Hey! I am talking to you," Nadia grabbed Viviana’s shoulder.
"Shush, kid!" Viviana shrugged her hand off her shoulder. As a vertically challenged person, nothing irks her more than when someone who is not close to her touches her shoulder. She’ll take it as patronizing and demeaning.
"Why is Kastello keeping me here, in his bedroom?" Viviana asked Katerina again.
Katerina wetted her lips. Nadia is from the Donatello family. Leander wouldn’t want to go against that family. But Nadia is going too far not even knowing what Leander feels about her. Leander never liked her clinginess. He is not going to like Nadia allowed inside his room.
But Leander accommodates this woman and goes above and beyond for her. She doesn’t even know her name. But she knows only one thing. "You are... You are a very important person to Leander."
Viviana’s heart skipped a beat hearing that answer. What could that mean? Do they not know who I really am?
Nadia was not impressed by that answer for obvious reasons. Her father told her that she should be open to an alpha male like Leander having mistresses even after their wedding. But how can Leander betray her like that? After all these years he waited for her, where did this mysterious woman come from? Why is she staying in his room?
That’s why she came here today; to have a look. When she looked at the short woman, she knew that the ugly old woman is going to be just a phase in Leander’s life. Just like Helena was!
Leander’s destiny could only be her; Nadia knew.
And that’s why Katerina’s remark angered her so much.
"Don’t they discipline the maids in the Kastello household?" she raised her hand at Katerina to hit her. She might have been afraid to hit Leander’s mistress, but she cannot let his servants talk against her. She should nip that habit in the bud. Servants should not be allowed to side with the mistress when she becomes the wife.
"Whoa, wait right there," Viviana grabbed her hand. "Don’t raise your hand like that! It’s not lady-like!"
Nadia’s face twitched in anger as she looked at Viviana. Viviana’s calm demeanor only angered her more. "You’re here because you look like her! He’ll get bored of you soon!" She shouted.
"What’s the commotion here?"
That deep voice that superficially appeared to hold no emotion, made Nadia tremble. Viviana furrowed her brows to see Nadia shaking in fear. She ignored Leander altogether.
"Whom do I resemble?" she asked Nadia.
This appears to be an interesting development, doesn’t it?
Nadia’s hazel eyes filled with tears. She couldn’t believe that she almost said her name. Leander hates it when someone mentions her.
Viviana spared a glance at Leander standing by the door. He was angry, raging. She let go of Nadia’s hand. She didn’t want to face Leander’s wrath because of a Donatello girl. He can take his child bride and do whatever he wants with her.
She asked the hairdresser if she could wash her hair. Her eyes burned because of the bleach and her scalp felt itchy. She touched her hair, and she had a feeling that all her hair was kept inside the foils.
She was not used to bleaching but she would have thought that only the parts where the bleach was applied would be foiled. But what would she know over a professional?
The hairdresser looked a bit uncomfortable. Viviana figured that the drama that happened earlier would be the reason. He told her that he’ll wash it himself and that he is paid to do that.
Viviana let him do that. She didn’t know why Leander entered the room. He said nothing about her grabbing his fiancée’s hand. Steve stood by the door and blocked Nadia who was about to leave. Nadia looked very uncomfortable.
What is going on here? Eh, whatever!
The hairdresser washed her hair. "It’s...not perfect yet. I think we should bleach it once more," he said.
Viviana touched her hair and it felt...damaged. She grabbed her hair to have a look and it looked...Orange! She ran to the big mirror and had a look.
"Why is my hair orange?" she asked the hairdresser.
"You wanted to bleach your hair, Ma’am. We have to bleach once more and apply toner to~"
"You said you are bleaching just the highlights. My entire hair is orange!" She shouted at the hairdresser and turned to the mirror. Her hands started to shake. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
She touched her hair and it felt brittle. She thought If she wrung her hair, it would break and crumble in her palms. She never liked the texture of her hair before, but now it felt pathetic.
How could this happen? My poor hair...
"But ma’am... You wanted to bleach your entire hair," the hairdresser said.
"What?" Viviana looked at him. That was not what happened at all.
The hairdresser was panicking, and his eyes inadvertently looked in the direction of Nadia. Viviana looked at Nadia and she was covering her mouth with her hand. Viviana remembered the hairdresser and Nadia disappearing together for some time.
So that’s what happened! This f*cking rich kid! Did she coerce the hairdresser or paid him?
Viviana sighed. In the end, it doesn’t matter. What could she do to Leander’s child bride?
Her beautiful hair is gone... It’s gone... It’s not coming back.
She looked at Leander and he was talking to Katerina. Nadia grinned at her. She didn’t look afraid anymore. Why would she when her fiancé takes her side?
Viviana turned to the mirror to have a look. She looked like a clown with an orange head. If she painted her face white and her nose red, she can get paid at children’s birthday parties.
Her image in the mirror blurred as her eyes filled with tears.
She didn’t want to give those powerful rich people the satisfaction that they’d successfully gotten her. They think that since they have the money and power, they can do whatever they want. They can coerce a hairdresser and ruin someone else’s hair for no reason.
She covered her face with her hands and took in deep breaths.
This much is nothing, Melanie... This much is nothing... We’ve been through a lot worse by that kind of person. Nadia is not the first. You know that’s what they do. It’s nothing new... It’s just hair... Just hair... It’s okay... Take a deep breath. It’ll grow back... It’s just hair... just...
Viviana tried but she couldn’t control herself. It took her years to grow out her hair. Her hair grows really slowly. She didn’t even want this. Leander suggested the makeover and his fiancée came out of nowhere and did this to her. She wanted to cry as she felt so helpless.
But she willed herself to not cry.
"If you don’t like it, we can color it back," the hairdresser said.
Viviana took a deep breath having composed herself. The best way to get back at those people is by appearing unaffected. That would sour their mood that their efforts went to waste.
"Well then," she smiled. "Start by cutting my hair. Maybe a pixie cut," she walked to the chair.
She is used to acting all fine. She can fake a perfect smile. No one would know what she truly feels when she smiles. That’s how she lived her life ever since Leo’s death. She can continue living that way until...
Sigh!
Her hair is damaged. It’s no use holding on to it. Maybe she can try having short hair for some time.
"Do not touch her hair."
Leander’s authoritative voice rang inside the room. Viviana sighed and looked at Leander.
What does he want now?
