Chapter 313: An Unexpected Call

Viviana sat by the angel statue watching the lemon tree they planted. It has been ten days since she arrived here. She pleaded with Leander not to send her here alone but he sent her here anyway.

At least, he said that he loved her.

She tried to see the positives here. She could be close to the place she grew up in and she could see her baby’s grave. The angel statue was pretty. She didn’t get to give any designs for the statue but it was the same angel as his tattoo.

Jophiel.

She didn’t know why she could be happy about it. Thinking about the baby she lost, she didn’t feel like crying anymore.

Was it because of Ziya? Or... was it because she was hoping that the last time, she was with Leander would pay off?

Maybe it was both?

She placed her hand on her lower abdomen. She hoped she would get pregnant again.

She was a little bored there. Leander had ordered (pleaded) her to not leave the house. There were almost fifty men stationed in and around the house. They were under strict orders not to let her out. Martha was here to help. There were plenty of spaces to walk around in the house but she was bored.

She had signed the contract. Leander did send a lawyer for her. The initial contract was amended further to suit her needs and since Daniella agreed to the corrections, they signed the deal.

Currently, she has invested five million dollars. She thought that it was a brilliant investment. Maya went to work with Daniella and Gabriella’s designs were sent to production. They hoped that the designs get successful. It would bring them a lot of profit.

She hoped it would be time-consuming too because she was bored. She had nothing to do except look after the baby and the dogs. It was not hard at all.

She wasn’t interested in cooking now that Leander was not there and she just spent time staring at the distance. Well, she only had an hour or two to stare blankly at the distance but she felt like it was her whole life.

She was bored to death.

Her phone rang and her heart skipped a beat thinking it was Leander. But the smile on her face vanished as fast as it bloomed seeing the unknown number on the screen.

Who might this be?

She answered the call. "Hello..."

There was silence at the other end.

"Hello..." she asked again.

She could hear someone clearing their throat. The voice was deep as that of a man. Viviana wondered who it might be.

"It’s Vito... Your father."

His voice sounded sweet to her. He didn’t sound like an old guy. He sounded gentle.

Viviana couldn’t get a word out as she had a brain freeze. She understood every word spoken. She already knew the truth. It shouldn’t have been a shock to her. The fact that he called her out of nowhere shouldn’t have been a big deal for her. She has heard about Vito Vitale.

It was not a shock that made her tongue-tied rather it was...

Father... my father...

There was something in that word that made her heart leap in her chest cavity. The fluidity as he acknowledged her and his child... It was something she wished to hear all her life.

It was so easy for him to say those words to her—your father.

My father.

Viviana’s hands shook out of excitement and her throat went heavy as she tried to swallow her emotions. Her eyes clouded out of happiness.

"Minerva...?" Vito called her. "Or... which name do you prefer?" he asked.

He was not going to pretend as if he didn’t investigate her and knew nothing about her. It would be a lie and his daughter wouldn’t be a fool to not know who he is and what he does.

Viviana shook her head. "No, it’s fine. I don’t mind. You can call me a pig and I wouldn’t care."

He told me he’s my father! That’s enough.

Vito let out a deep breath. "Grazie a Dio," he mumbled. "I..."

Now it was time for Vito Vitale to be lost for words.

"I was scared how you’d react, Principessa..." Vito said. He couldn’t help but smile at his carefulness around her. He didn’t think he wanted to be on her good side this much.

Call her a pig? Why would he call his offspring a pig? He’s not a pig!

And she’s a princess. His princess.

Viviana sat hugging her knees on that chair.

He called me Princess!

"Can I ask you something?" Viviana asked. Her heart pounded. How will he take it if she asks him that?

"...yes?" Vito answered as a question. He unconsciously scratched his chest. She could ask him anything but he might not have all the answers to her questions.

What will he do if she asks him why he abandoned her to be raised in an orphanage? His answer would sound like an excuse.

It was for that reason he was holding back on contacting her. That, and because of his stupid son who killed her pet. She’s very sensitive with life, he’s learned. For her a dog’s life too is valuable. He would never understand that kind of thinking.

For him, it’s "us" versus "them".

"Us" is a very few people. "Them" is every other life on the earth—humans, animals, plants... everything else.

"Can I call you "dad" once?" Viviana asked. She twisted her skirt with her fingers as she was nervous. Tears rolled down her cheek. "Please, just once. I won’t ask for a lot," she said.

She had a dad who raised her. It was not like she never knew fatherly love. But still... he is her biological father. She has his blood in her. She just wanted one chance, that’s all.

It must have been mighty hard for Vito Vitale to accept an illegitimate child as his and that too after so many years. She didn’t want to push it.

"That’s..." Vito stood up. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

Of everything he had to offer, this is what she wants? She was going to beg him for her birthright? What a fool...

He didn’t know why his cheek was wet though.

Viviana couldn’t hear him for some time and she thought he got angry and ended the call. But then she heard him shout.

"Ignazio!" he shouted. "Prepare the jet. I am going to meet my daughter! Yes, today. Now!"

He was going to talk to her today and meet her in the coming week. But he didn’t have the patience anymore. He wanted to see her.
