Chapter 308: The Bothering Truth

Leander, with a smile, pushed Viviana to the front. Her bewildered look tickled his heart. As she walked to the front, he remembered something.

The dark-haired, dark-eyed girl with short hair he used to see in his dreams—his angel.

He couldn’t discern where they were for only she was in his eyes. That girl’s eyes were red and filled with tears, her lips were trembling, her hands were fisted, and he noticed her holding back her urge to cry.

She looked abandoned.

Leander’s heart clenched as he remembered his feeling back then. It was the same feeling he had whenever he was near.

I will protect her. I will not let any harm befall her. No one can hurt her. She is mine. Mine alone.

"Tell him about Leona, Melanie. Tell him how you saw her die in the fire," Leander smiled. He couldn’t help it. He remembered a memory from their past. And he could understand why he couldn’t let her go even when he knew he had to go against his grandfather to protect her.

Leona loved you, Melanie. So much...

He wanted to tell her. He will tell her later.

"Fire?" Viola stood up. "What fire are you going to talk about?"

Viviana looked to her side. Viola looked traumatized. Thinking back at the Abenney fire where she almost lost Leander must be painful. Viviana couldn’t understand why Viola couldn’t care for Leander now if she loves him that much. Did the trauma make her disconnect from Leander?

She got happy thinking that maybe Leander has a chance for motherly love.

Leander saw his bleeding-heart wife with a smile. He knew that she was building a dream fort where everything was bright and cheery; where unicorns fart rainbows and throw up glitter; where everyone loved each other and they all laughed and be happy together.

This is not a Disney movie! Not everyone can be saved! What a stupid!

Leander signaled Steve and Steve dragged Viola out of the dining hall.

Viviana looked at Leander with a pout. He didn’t have to treat his mother like that. Can’t he see that she was scared?

Leander jerked his head. She turned to the front and faced Peter. She remembered the conversation she heard the night before the fire. And what that girl had to go through in the hands of two monsters.

Both of them are dead. One died cruelly. Another had a seemingly easy death. She was not very satisfied, but at least he didn’t die peacefully.

Only Peter is left.

She observed Peter. He was looking around and he was still shocked. And even then, she saw the rage in his eyes. If he was able to move, he would have hurt Leander.

"It’s time I properly introduce myself. I was born Melanie Filia Dei and was brought up in the St. Michael’s Orphanage in Abenney," she took in a deep breath seeing Peter’s eyes widening.

"You..." Peter’s hands shook as he pointed his finger at her. "It can’t be... It can’t be... That demon died... She is dead..."

Demon? Me?

Viviana could only scoff. Guess for an evil person his victim would be the devil. It’s interesting. Humans tend to label anything they don’t agree with as evil.

"I listened to you negotiating for selling the land. I saw what Evander and Barnabas did to that little girl in the orphanage. I was there when the men you sent to kill me threw explosives into the principal’s office. I was the witness, the sole witness who could have brought you down," Viviana said.

Her eyes reddened and her throat went heavy. Standing on the ledge, she thought she had finished everything she could do. But maybe she needed to see the utter disbelief on Peter’s face.

"But you died... You..." Peter looked at Leander. "Then, you..." he pointed his finger at Leander. Leander smirked.

"You took everything from me, Peter... Everything... With fire, you..."

She took a deep breath. She doesn’t have to cry now.

"Do you remember, Peter? The girl who was lying paralyzed on the hospital bed... It was I. I vowed to get back at the Kastello family. And, do you know what I was called after the fire?" Viviana smirked. "Viviana Mattias."

"No..." Peter shook his head in disbelief. "It can’t be you... It... Evander said..."

"Yeah, I cut off his manhood and fed it to his dog. I made sure Evander can never have an heir. I did it because you killed my parents, Peter... With explosives and... fire... Fire... They got burnt, my parents..." She pressed her lips. Her eyes had clouded and she couldn’t see Peter’s expression clearly anymore.

She bowed her head and wiped her eyes. She felt Leander’s gentle hand at the small of her back. Leander let out a deep sigh. He sounded disappointed.

"Sorry," she looked at Leander.

"I can’t bear your tears, you should know," he said wiping her tears with his hands. He is in a way responsible for her parents’ death. She must have forgiven him for it, but he will never forget the hurt he caused her.

But she was right. She was right that the Heberden Blowout plan was hijacked by his grandfather and that’s why the explosives weren’t duds. His grandfather killed her parents.

Viviana smiled and leaned on his chest. She needed some charging. His warmth always charges her with courage.

"You knew? You were plotting against us all this time?" Peter shouted. He managed to get up from his chair and walked toward Leander. "For a woman? For a f*cking woman? You... I raised you. I gave you everything you needed. I gave you life and you..."

Peter was angry that he was betrayed.

"Kill her! Kill this cockroach!" he shouted at the men around. But no one moved a muscle. Everyone was looking at Leander.

Viviana got distracted by the baby’s cry. By the sound of it, she must be hungry. She got out of Leander’s hold. Wiping her tears, she took in a deep breath. The tip of her nose and her cheeks were a little reddish as she had rubbed it, but her dark eyes glimmered and a smile bloomed on her face.

"Ignazia," she said looking at Leander. "I’m naming the baby Ignazia..."

Leander was stunned.

She is naming the baby after fire? Why?

Doesn’t she hate fire?
