Chapter 307: A Chance

Viviana was shocked by what Leander said. Leander was saying that the recent attack on them was arranged by Peter and Leander was not the target, but she was.

Peter really tried to kill her.

She should not be surprised. It should not be a shock. It was not. But what shocked her was Leander’s attitude towards his grandfather.

There were Peter’s spies in the Orchid Gardens, Leander says. So that means, the past few weeks that were hell for her were all part of Leander’s plan? He wanted his grandfather to believe that their marriage was rocky.

And Peter actually tried to kill her!

Viviana understood everything now. It explained a lot. Even on the day of the attack, no one knew Leander was home.

And more importantly, the second floor was untouched. Anyone who wanted Leander dead would have attacked the second floor.

But only the first floor was attacked.

Why didn’t I think of it before?

When the plan failed, they tried to poison her using Mary. Mary was the spy.

Viviana sighed. She treated Mary like her sister. Why would Mary betray her? She would have given Mary anything she asks of her and Leander would have protected her even if she was forced to spy on them. All she had to do was come clean. But she didn’t.

In the end, Mary chose to betray. Unforgivable.

Wait... I was not the only one on the first floor. The baby was with me! Did Peter not care for the baby?

Now she was mad.

Viola was screaming non-stop. "CALM DOWN, WILL YOU?" Viviana shouted.

Viola covered her mouth and scooted back until her back hit the wall.

Leander leaned on the armrest of the chair Peter was sitting. Peter leaned back. Leander’s face was so close to Peter’s.

"Shouldn’t you be proud of me Grandpa?" Leander asked. "You had trouble getting one spy inside my house. But I managed to turn everyone working for you against you. Aren’t I smarter?"

"Proud?" Peter said his voice shaking. "You’re a backstabber. Every one of them too..."

"Backstabber?" Leander scoffed. "Who gave you the right to think about taking my wife from me?" Leander shouted. "Should I have let you kill my wife?"

Peter closed his eyes and pressed his lips. When he opened his eyes, he was devoid of the fear he showed moments ago.

"You really are weak like your father," Peter scoffed.

Leander stood straight. His lips curved up and like the low rumble of a thunder, he chuckled with his shoulders shaking.

"Am I though?" Leander shrugged. There was a certain jubilance in his demeanor. But just in a second, his shoulders went stiff. "My wife is still alive. But, Grandpa, you won’t be... for long," he hissed, his voice getting low.

Viviana’s heart clenched. She didn’t think Leander was the guy who would give empty threats. And the situation...

She wanted the end of the Kastello family. She thought attacking Evander would set a spark that would burn the Kastello family from within. She wanted Leander to die last after seeing the destruction of the family he protected. She thought she didn’t need to be alive to see it.

But now...

Here she is... She fell in love with Leander. It was tough for her and a lot happened but she decided on co-existing with the Kastello family. She was even willing to dine with Peter Kastello and let him have a good relationship with his granddaughter.

But everything has changed. Leander protected her from his grandfather. Something that she had never imagined in her wildest dreams, is happening.

She is standing in the Rose Gardens watching Leander turning his back against his grandfather.

How did this happen?

She remembered Gabriella’s words. She said that she should turn Leander against his family. She thought it was impossible. She never tried to turn Leander against his family. She wanted him to know the devious side of his family that he ignored. She wanted him to be aware.

Also... She just loved him the best she could.

That’s all she did. She loved him as much as she could. She showed him how much she loves him in any way possible.

And here he is... standing tall with his nose up against his grandfather, confronting him for trying to hurt her. He put his life on the line to protect her and succeeded.

The guy who was a "Yes-man"—who only knew to nod and say "yes" to his grandfather, is talking back against his grandfather.

Is love that powerful?

"Melanie," Leander turned at her.

"Yes," Viviana stepped closer to him.

He’s been calling her using all her names and yet he never calls her using her real name in front of others. He kept that name hidden, almost. For him to use that name in front of his grandfather...

She used to fear her past getting revealed to Peter. She feared Peter would destroy the life work of Father Patrick and hurt Father Patrick.

But she was not afraid of the truth anymore. She has Leander by her side. Not by her side always. When there is danger, he turns his back, stands in front of her, and protects her.

Like a guardian angel.

Leander held her hand and pulled her to his front. As she walked past him, she took notice of his eyes. Those sharp eyes held contempt for everyone around him and a proud smirk as he held her. He was not afraid of anyone. It was as if he was thinking that she was enough.

She got reminded of the time Leona dragged her out of the principal’s office after Leona’s mother blamed her for being a bad influence on Leona. Leona had the same look.

Those eyes... Michael...

She almost slipped up and called him by that name right now.

From the moment she met him, he reminded her of Leona. Now too, she got reminded of the friend who protected her at all costs and was proud to be by her side.

She wetted her lips. She cannot keep on thinking about Leona when it hurts Leander. Leona is dead. Maybe she is too pathetic and attracts people with the same personality. Leona and Leander could have the same personality. There must not be anything more to it.

"Tell him who you are," Leander said placing his hand at the back of her head. "Tell him your real name and where you grew up."

Viviana’s eyes widened and she turned to look at him. She wanted to know if he was serious. The smirk on his lips was still hanging and she knew that he wanted her to speak up.

"Go on... Tell him about your friend. I know you want to. Let him hear what he did to your friend and you..." Leander said.
