Chapter 294: Remnant of Another Woman

Viviana ran to Leander. He was not even holding the baby properly. The baby sounded hoarse and it didn’t even have the strength to cry. It must have been crying for a long time.

The outdoor staff and the indoor staff all gathered to hear the baby’s voice. There is something to a pitiful cry of a baby that invokes the inner protective feeling of anyone.

Viviana couldn’t figure out what was going on too. The cloth covering the baby was not even a towel. The baby was covered with the microfiber cleaning cloth used to wipe cars. She could see the little bud-like toes wriggling.

Her heart filled with compassion.

"Whose baby is this?"

Viviana got the baby from his hands. Looking at the baby, her heart fell. It was a girl. She was light as a feather. The baby was still covered in blood and bodily fluids. The cut of the umbilical cord was serrated and a thread was used instead of a clamp.

The baby must have been delivered an hour or two earlier. It was such a pitiful sight that made her blood boil. Something inside her clicked seeing the puffy eyes of the baby. Her little pink mouth was open and she couldn’t even make a sound anymore. Her tightly clenched hands searched for something.

She noticed the monogram on the cloth. It belonged to Leander.

What the...

"Where did you find the baby, Leander?" she asked him holding the baby to her chest to warm her. Her heart started to race. If the baby is covered with a rag from Leander’s car, where and how did this newborn baby end up with him?

He was standing there like a statue. This baby clearly needs medical assistance. What was he thinking when he brought her here?

"You’re not worried about touching another woman’s remnants now?" he asked.

Viviana didn’t expect that reply from him. But without averting his eyes, he was staring at her, observing her.

"Wha- It’s a baby!" she said. What other woman’s remnants is he talking about?

Then it struck her. She talked about adoption just that day. And the past few weeks had been hell on earth for her. He talked about breaking her heart. And he was unavailable to her. Most times she could see that he was hurting but he didn’t open up to her; not for the lack of her trying though.

He was suffering and making her suffer. She thought it might be about a lot of things. But...

Is this his daughter?

Was he suffering because he found out that he had made another woman pregnant? Is that why he told me that he was going to break my heart?

"Leander!" she grabbed his arm as tightly as she could. "Where is the baby’s mother?" she asked gritting her teeth. "Who is her mother? Where is she?" She hit his chest as he turned his face.

For a baby this young to be without her mother... what went on?

Did something happen to her? Or did Leander take this baby from her mother just because she said she was okay with adoption?

Leander looked at her, completely blank. "She won’t ask for the baby," he said stopping her from hitting him. His eyes looked menacing.

Viviana didn’t find that right. He didn’t appear to be angry at her. He looked like he had killed someone and wanted to kill them twice and then once more. She looked at his shoes and it was stained with blood.

Who made him this mad?

"What did you do, Leander?" She hit his arm. "What did you do?" She screamed at the top of her lungs.

If he murdered the mother of his baby’s mother, then...

Is he capable of doing something like that? She didn’t know.

"I did exactly what you don’t want me to do, dear," he scoffed and looked at the baby. She did see a twinge of gentleness in his eyes as he looked at the baby.

Viviana pressed her ear on the baby’s chest to see if she was breathing fine. The baby appeared to be healthy other than the fact that she needed a bath. The baby calmed had calmed down in her embrace and started making suckling noises.

She’s hungry!

Viviana didn’t want to bother with Leander anymore. The baby is her priority.

"Call for a doctor!" she told Katerina "And get the basic necessities for the baby".

"I’ll prepare for a bath too," Katerina nodded and ran inside.

Standing by the door, Viviana shouted, "Where’s Selena?" she asked.

Selena is a gardening staff who had a nursing baby. For the time being, the baby needed to be fed.

"Signora, Selena applied for leave for her baby’s inoculation," one of the staff replied.

Viviana sighed.

"I can...feed the baby..."

Viviana was stunned when Maya stepped forward. She didn’t know Maya had recently given birth.

"I had a stillbirth four months ago and...I am still lactating. The medications were not helping and the pain... I thought I was cursed," Maya’s eyes filled with tears. She looked at the baby and gently touched her bald head. "Guess this one needed me..."

Viviana’s eyes reddened with tears. She gave the baby to Maya and asked her to use the guest bedroom for privacy. Viviana was awed by how some misfortunes have a silver lining to them.

Leander’s car left the house again, and Viviana didn’t even bother to look. She was so mesmerized by the little thing she got to hold in her hand.

She is Leander’s daughter...

"The baby latched on pretty well and she is filled and burped..." Maya offered the baby back to Viviana. "Look at her tummy...so round..."

Maya smiled. Viviana joined her smile too and held the baby close to her chest. Katerina offered help in cleaning the baby. Viviana saw how experienced Katerina was in handling newborns. She learned a lot.

Just as the baby was cleaned, the baby products arrived. They changed the baby. The crib hadn’t arrived yet and Viviana rocked the baby in her arms.

Nathaniel arrived. He checked the baby’s vitals and gave the okay. He wanted her to keep an eye on the umbilical cord area as it might get infected. Other than that, he assured Viviana that it was a perfectly healthy baby girl.

Viviana sat in the living room with the baby in her arms. In her embrace, the baby had fallen asleep. Her arms hurt after holding the baby in the same position for long, but she didn’t want to part with the baby.

"She’s so cute..." Mary sat beside her legs and kept on staring at the baby. "She would grow up to be a beauty!"

Martha too couldn’t help but stand beside Viviana to have a look at the baby.

"So, what now?" Martha asked. "Are you going to name the baby, Signora?"

Viviana looked at Martha and her heart skipped a beat. Martha was subtly asking her whether they will be raising the baby.

But what does she know? He did say that he won’t give her his child...

Will Leander let her raise his baby?
