Chapter 271: The Funeral

Viviana saw a dark figure at the far end of the first-row dart at the coffin. It was Viola.

"You’re making a spectacle of my son’s death!" she cried at Barnabas. Barnabas leaned forward and glared at a couple of men standing by the side. They grabbed Viola as she tried to push Leonardo away.

The fedora guy Viviana saw in the mall in the past appeared from behind Leonardo ready to throw Viola to the ground if she touched his master. He relaxed seeing the Kastello men stopping her.

There were murmurs among the attendees. Hiding behind her sunglasses, Viviana noticed the expression on everyone. Anyone could see who the true allies of the Kastello family were.

Lionel and his father were already in the other side, seated. They didn’t appear to pander to Leonardo Vitale.

Viola was forcefully brought back to her seat. Barnabas walked to her and kneeling beside her, he whispered something in her ear. Viola went limp and sat silently.

Peter clenched his chest and almost slipped down from his seat. Barnabas and Leander caught him before he fell face first on the ground.

She didn’t know if Peter was truly that aggrieved or he enacted a drama to turn everyone’s attention from Viola’s foolish outburst.

What can she believe?

Everything calmed down for a moment and Leander took his seat.

Viviana didn’t have the courage to look at Leander. If he sees what she sees, then he won’t be able to bear it. Even his grandfather stopped him from doing something against the guy who killed his brother only to be mocked by others.

How will he be able to bear it?

She turned to look at him. He was calm. What she knows about her husband is that when he is calm, everything will be fine. He must be waiting for his chance to act.

Viviana looked at Peter. He was clutching the armrest of the chair hard enough for his hand to turn white. She did not pity him.

Do you feel grief, Peter? Isn’t that how the parents of the kids you killed felt when they buried their burnt children? A few of them lost all their children to the fire. They would have felt a lot more grief than you ever did! Did you ever think about them?

She wanted to ask him.

Her attention turned to Leonardo as she felt his gaze on her. Her heart started to pound. She wouldn’t know what to do and what not to do in situations like this. Even Evander went for her zipper in a public place. What would this low-life do to humiliate her?

She averted her gaze strongly as if she was unaffected by him. She cannot let him sniff out her fear. She was determined to uphold her reputation for her sake and the pride of her husband.

Her eyes ended at Nadia. She looked thinner than usual. Leonardo was holding her waist and she noticed the creases on her dress. Leonardo was manhandling her.

Viviana didn’t know if it is the usual way Leonardo treats any woman or the special treatment he gave Nadia alone. She didn’t care either way. That guy is nothing to her. So was Nadia.

Surrounded by sycophants, Leonardo threw the rose at Evander’s coffin. He didn’t respect the life of that man. Why would he respect his corpse? He smirked with disgust looking at the coffin.

Viviana noticed tears in Nadia’s eyes. She moved her lips when Viviana’s eyes met hers. Viviana could read her lips.

’Help me, please!’

Nadia was repeating. Viviana didn’t lose eye contact. She wanted Nadia to know that she heard her.

’Why?’ she mouthed.

Why should she help the woman who tried to do a horrible thing to her with the help of Evander?

Nadia’s eyes widened as if she was surprised by her. But then she curled her lips as if she understood the predicament she was in. Her face went pale. And then she glared at Viviana.

Viviana sighed. She’s still prideful. What a pitiful fool!

Hosea Donatello approached his daughter. But Ignazio Salvo, the fedora guy stopped him. No words were exchanged between the men, but Hosea silently went back to his seat.

Leonardo led Nadia to his front whispering something to her ear. Nadia went paler and like a clockwork doll, she followed his orders.

The sycophants led Leonardo to the seats they emptied for him at the West side, but Leonardo walked toward Peer.

Viviana held her breath. Leonardo appeared to be having a plan.

Peter sat straight not looking at Leonardo. Leonardo walked to Peter, held his hand, and kissed his ring.

Everyone was shocked to see the heir to the Vitale family accepting Peter Kastello as the Don when he was the one who killed the grandson of Peter.

It caused doubts that Peter might have successfully made a deal with the Vitale family in secret.

Those who tried to garner the goodwill of Leonardo Vitale scattered away awkwardly. They’ve outed themselves in front of the Kastello family when they didn’t know the secret plans Peter had made behind the scenes.

Viviana looked at Leander. He was smirking. Viviana saw Leonardo walking to Leander. She held her breath wondering what might happen.

Leonardo patted Leander’s shoulder in a friendly way. It was loud and masculine. Leander nodded his head at Leonardo with his lips pressed. It gave the impression that both were friends.

Leonardo then walked behind Leander. Viviana’s heart skipped a beat when Leonardo’s suit grazed the back of her head.

Leonardo ended up sitting next to her. Nadia sat next to Leonardo.

Viviana looked at Leander. He looked pokerfaced. But she could sense the murderous aura from him.

Don’t kill me, husband. I have nothing to do with this.

She didn’t know what to do. Switching seats now after they acted as friends wouldn’t be good. But sitting beside Leonardo might cause rumors too. The Vitale family’s reputation is of that kind.

But he brought Nadia as a date.

Viviana’s mind was at war. She didn’t know what to do. Leander was angry at her. She didn’t know why. She wanted to get mad at him for not trusting her, but she cannot act childish here.

No one taught me how to be a lady in these situations. What should I do?

She noticed a head bobbing and her eyes ended up in that direction. Lionel was bowing his head. His shoulders were shaking.
