Chapter 252: Necessary Secret

Chapter 252: Necessary Secret

Leander kissed Viviana’s forehead. "Sleep well, Lemon..." he whispered.

He pressed his forehead over hers. His heart was heavy, he didn’t know why. Shutting his eyes close, he took in a deep breath.

"I’m sorry for arguing with you, Lemon... I am sorry I didn’t listen to you... I’m sorry..." he whispered.

He sucked in a deep breath and sat straight to avoid the wetness from his eyes reaching her and waking her up. She needs rest.

He felt like a kite with its string cut off. He could see that something was terribly wrong. And maybe in his heart he already knew what the answer was. And yet, he couldn’t accept it and his mind blocked the answer.

There was so much blood.

He remembered Katerina telling him that she might be pregnant. He scoffed it off. But what if she was right?

Heh!

What if?

There is no need to wonder about what-ifs now. It is clear, isn’t it?

No, it can’t be... It can’t be... How can it be?

He decided to take a walk to clear his mind. He cannot lose to his emotions now when danger is approaching them on all fronts.

When he got down the stairs, he noticed Nathaniel standing in the corner of the living room. He was waiting for him. Steve was standing by the stairs. Katerina was standing with her face covered with her hands. She was weeping. So was the other maid.

Leander did not want to talk to him. He knew. He knew it. He didn’t dare to listen to the doctor and confirm it.

"Among the discharge, there was a sac... I can safely assume it is the amniotic sac," Nathaniel said. "I found that she was pregnant earlier with the blood test taken. I was already on my way here when my mother called..."

Nathaniel took an unconscious step back. He knew his life is going to end now. Today would be the day marked on his tombstone. He held back his tears of fear. He didn’t want to die.

But he didn’t want to keep the truth from Leander. Even Leander has the right to know when he lost his child.

This is it...

Nathaniel watched Leander’s hands closely. Any time now he will reach for his gun and shoot him in the head. He winced in fear as he sensed the movement in Leander.

"Capo!" Steve reached for Leander who stumbled back and helped him sit on the stairs.

Steve was panicking. Never in his life has he seen his boss this despondent. He looked at Nathaniel. He could have spared Capo this heartache.

"You..." Leander’s voice was shaking. He cleared his throat. His eyes were still unfocused but he gathered himself. "You told me she cannot get pregnant. How?"

Katerina and Martha forgot to cry. This was news for them. They looked at Nathaniel.

"I’m not sure... There was less than a 1% chance of that. It’s... But her uterus cannot handle pregnancy and that’s why...this miscarriage happened..."

Leander’s arms were resting on his knees and his hands were hanging weakly. His eyes didn’t leave Nathaniel.

"How old is the-was the..." Leander tried to cup his hand but failed.

"Fetus?" Nathaniel tried to complete his sentence.

"...baby?" Leander said almost at the same time as Nathaniel.

Nathaniel corrected himself immediately. "The baby was at least eight weeks old."

Leander wanted to scoff. But he didn’t have the energy to.

Eight weeks?

Why did she think that she was infertile? Why did the doctors say that she is infertile? Why?

All this time, she was carrying his baby while crying that she cannot carry a baby.

What fate is this? Why is this happening?

Leander couldn’t figure it out. His hands started to shake.

"Why?" he said bowing his head.

Why did this happen? Was she right that she cannot be happy? Or did he make this happen with his words? She wanted a baby and she had one all this time. He was the one who didn’t want a baby and suddenly...

Nathaniel didn’t know what Leander was asking about.

"The fetus couldn’t attach to the uterus properly..."

"I took her on a motorbike ride today. Is that why?" Leander asked.

She was fine... She was fine even this morning. She was smiling and dancing happily... It can’t be her fault. It can’t be.

"No, sir," Nathaniel refused immediately. "It’s her uterus~"

"You said she cannot get pregnant!!" Leander shouted out of nowhere. "How did she get pregnant with her weak uterus?"

His lips were trembling and his face was twitching in anger.

Her uterus! Her uterus! Wasn’t it weak always? How can a baby form there and grow for eight weeks?

Katerina jumped in front of Nathaniel out of her motherly protective instinct. She could see that Leander jumped to his beastly mode.

Nathaniel was stunned. He had a feeling that Leander doesn’t have a grasp of basic biology. Conception happens in the fallopian tubes and not in the uterus.

But the wonder is, her fallopian tubes appeared blocked by the ultrasounds he took. There was very less chance that she could conceive. How did it happen?

A miracle, perhaps?

Nathaniel had common sense. He didn’t think the grieving lion would care for a science lesson from him.

Leander’s eyes ended upstairs. He shouted without thinking. What if she hears him?

He wanted to get mad at Nathaniel for lying to him. He wanted to take out his anger on someone. But he knew deep in his heart that no one could be blamed. Even she didn’t know that she was pregnant.

If she knows, then...

Leander clutched his chest. She is already in a constant state of trying to be unhappy and finding reasons to stop living. If she learns that she lost her pregnancy, she will definitely end herself.

"She should not know," he said standing up.

He can feel depressed all he wants, but he does not have that luxury. He has to settle everything for her before she wakes up.

He cannot lose her.

"But Capo," Katerina stepped up. It’s cruel to keep it from Signora.

Nathaniel held his mother back. "Sure, Capo," he said.

Martha nodded too. It’s not like she has a choice.

Leander looked at Steve. Even he looked perplexed. But meeting with Leander’s eyes, he nodded.

"Signora will not know it from us," he said.

Leander hummed. He then stared at the floor for some time. "What will happen to the baby?" he asked Nathaniel.

"It’s...I’ll do what you want me to do. I have access to an incinera~"

"Get a coffin," Leander told Steve. Steve nodded.

Leander turned and walked up the stairs. Steve scratched his chest. His boss’ walk was not majestic as usual. He even tripped on a stair and almost fell.

Steve worried for Leander. How will he handle this grief alone?

"Can you find out what baby it is?" Steve asked Nathaniel.

"It will take a few days," Nathaniel said. "I hope it’s not a boy..." he mumbled.

Steve held his hand. "Do the test and we can decide based on the results," he said.

Steve believed that if it was a girl, his boss wouldn’t be as grief-stricken as he is now. As they were discussing, Steve received a call from one of their men.

Evander is dead!
