Chapter 171: Feeling Disrespected

Leander ran his tongue inside his mouth. Viviana gulped seeing him angry. She was beyond confused by what he asked.

He then sighed again looking pitifully at her. He also looked like he was praying to the Almighty for patience.

Now she was curious—why? What did she do?

"I heard everything," he said.

"Oh," Viviana nodded. That makes sense. "Oh?" she raised her voice as she realized that he knows that she lied.

"Why?" he asked again.

This time Viviana understood the question. "I thought that she might blame the maids and that’s why I took~"

"Why?" he asked interjecting her.

That, he can figure out. This one has a savior complex. She thinks of him as the devil incarnate and she’s the saint with the bleeding heart protecting the innocents from his claws. She can be the savior of all if she wants to. He won’t mind.

She is wrong for thinking that he will punish someone without knowing the whole story. But he can let it go. He’s not surprised by the fact that she looks at him through a colored lens.

It definitely hurt, but... It is what it is.

He wanted to know why she allowed his mother to go that far. For someone who could take the knife and hack someone, she acts pretty docile in situations that need assertiveness and when there was a need for the "savior" to step up.

"I didn’t want your mother to feel disrespected in her son’s home," Viviana answered.

Leander was stunned. He stared at her. He could say for sure that she was not lying. He knitted his brows.

"I don’t know how far you heard. But she wanted me to cook. I don’t know how to cook fancy dishes so I left them with the chef. Because she wanted to taste my cooking, I cooked what I knew to cook. She wanted to cause trouble. I just wanted her to leave happy knowing that her son likes her better and she is the one with the highest authority in her son’s house. I don’t think she wanted any more than that. It’s not me she hates. She’s just insecure."

"That’s..." he didn’t know what to say. She’s complaining to him about his mother now.

He definitely didn’t think that this was her thought when she took the tantrum his mother threw. She might be right. His mother is going to be here probably for the night. And then, she’ll leave. It would be useless to make an issue out of her.

And how did she think that bowing down to her mother-in-law’s tantrums would help her in any way? She, who is not even half the age of his mother could see her insecurities and could take the high road.

Stupid! She’s stupid!

But what can he do? He wants to hug and kiss her.

He was happy when he was told his mother came for a visit for the first time. He came back home in a hurry to welcome his mother. But when he entered the house, he could see the nervousness of his staff. Even his cats stayed away from the living room.

He heard the commotion from the kitchen and went there. There he saw his mother who would allow Evander on her lap to feed him, throwing the pot of stew his wife made.

If he was someone who acted before thinking, his mother would be having a broken forearm by now so that she won’t throw things away and put his wife in danger.

The only thing that stopped him from doing that was the fact that she was his mother. If it was anyone else, their blood would be mixed with the stew on the floor.

And his anger turned toward his wife for allowing the situation to escalate this much. But then she told him the reason.

He only got madder.

Yes, she is his mother. But she is his wife. How can she not see it and allow herself to be bullied?

"If I wasn’t here when I was...?" he questioned her.

He wanted to know if she was planning on putting up with the abuse and then complaining to him.

"I would have hidden it from you. I don’t think you would want to hear me complain about your mother when I was accepting the tantrums willingly," she said.

She didn’t know why she was being too honest with him. She shouldn’t be such an open book. It’s not like she is going to convince him or anything.

But his eyes... God! They’re annoying. She loses to them all the time.

He raised his hand and she leaned back closing her eyes bracing for the hit. But she felt something soft land on her forehead.

"Too bad this is not the bedroom..." he pressed his cheek on hers.

He cannot even be accidentally blamed for having a soft heart. Violence is all he knows. But it is different for his family. He could take anything for them. What he can’t take is when they are hurt.

He yearned for his mother’s love for as long as he remembered. And yet, it was easy for him to take the side of the woman who openly stated that she wanted the destruction of his family.

He was not feeling guilty for what he felt.

Hearing what she said, he could say for sure that he was happy that he chose her. He is human. When someone could understand his heart without even putting much effort, how can he not be moved by that person?

She was willing to take all the abuse and hide it just for his sake. That is the brunt of the explanation she gave. That’s what she feels.

Call it whatever. She is suited to be his wife.

If only, she could be more assertive about her place in this house...

"Hey, dummy," he flicked her forehead as she was still closing her eyes.

She is still scared of him and that hurts him. But it’s okay. She’ll be better once she learns that he is not out to hurt her anymore.

Viviana looked at him rubbing her forehead. She couldn’t understand him. Did he expect her to run to him rubbing her eyes to complain to him like a child? She faced worse abuses than this for as long as she remembered.

She never complains. She deals with it her own way.

All she wanted was to not bother him. Is he against that? Does he want her to run to him and torture him to act on her behalf? She cannot do that as much as she likes to. She’s not used to having someone to lean on, ever.

Well, she had Leo. But she died.

And from then on, she had managed to survive alone. She is not planning on changing that anytime soon. And she didn’t want to antagonize Leander either.

"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh..." he said. "Did they not teach you that in your school, silly?" he flicked her forehead again. "You are my wife."

Viviana blinked. What the fresh hell is this? Why is he quoting the Bible? Is he going to leave his family business now that he’s married to me then? What a load of shite!

"What are you going to do?" she asked. "I don’t want her to think that I complained to you. I never complained," she said. "I can handle her."

Please don’t make my life hell than it already is.

Leander looked at her. He then walked to the pot on the ground. Picking it up, he walked to the dining room in a large gait.

"Leave it," she ran behind him. But he didn’t stop.

Viola was sitting at the table. Judging by how Steve was standing with the exit blocked, Viviana had a feeling that she was seated at the table forcefully.

Leander placed the pot on the table.

"The duck roast will be ready in the time you change," she said holding her breath.

"Bring the plates. I’m starving!" he rubbed his stomach. He even smiled.

Viviana could sense that he is going to cause drama. But she couldn’t do anything to stop him. She went to the kitchen to get the plates as he asked to.

Leander turned to face Viola. He smiled from his heart. "I’ve always wanted to have you here, mom," he held her hand. "I wanted to eat with you so badly..."

He smiled and kissed her hand. "I’m so glad you came for a visit. Stay here a couple of days, alright? Spend some time with me..."

Viola forcefully got her hand out of his hold. Leander looked at his empty hand and the smile on his face disappeared.

"How will I stay when I felt disrespected by your wife?" she asked. "This has never happened to me." Her eyes filled with tears.

Leander tilted his head and looked at her. "You see, mom... I watched everything. And you’ve every right to feel disrespected."

Viola widened her eyes. Her confusion was replaced with happiness that Leander is not mad at her.

"You’re smart to see her for who she is. She’s ill-suited for our family," Viola said.

Viviana walked in with the plates. She heard what Viola said and she agreed with Viola. She definitely does not suit the Kastello family.

Leander smirked. And Viviana had a feeling that he was not finished.
